The pattons would probably be the Ar/m16 of tanks, considering how they've been modernized so much for so many countries, from the stock m48/60 to the Israeli magach series upgrades
I think only the Centurion can even come close to competing with the T-54/T-55s in terms of how many wars they have fought in. Mental how much mileage they get out of these machines.
There is actually a well developed T-55 tank still in service as main tank. TR-85M1 Bizonul, Romania’s main battle tank. It has some interesting changes made but at the base of the tank it’s still quite a T-55
It may not be much against modern tanks but against everything else it still supports the infantry. A 100mm main gun will still mess up fortifications, technicals, lightly armored AFVs like APCs and Armored Cars, exposed infantry without anti tank or friendly armor, etc.
Need more of these history videos! This game is what got me back into studying the history of armored warfare, after rediscovering my passion for it. I always enjoy learning more about both the famous and lesser-known vehicles from any and every nation.
Only really the Chinese and the Egyptians used the AK-47 for any significant period of time. The Russians and everybody else used the AKM as soon as they could start stamping receivers.
In Ukraine for example, they ran out of 100mm howitzers. All the cannons are worn out/destroyed. But Russia got over 100k 100mm shells from Iran, and those coincidentally fit into the D10 Cannon. So they sent the T55s to Ukraine as SPAA pieces for indirect fire, and give them to DNR/LNR troops as "frontline vehicles" or rather morale boosters, since they are absolute death traps on a modern battlefied. But as a mobile cannon that shoots a few rounds in a genera direction, maybe hit a village or two, and then relocate before it can be counterbatteried, it is still viable. And for warlords in Africa it is the good old "Some tank is better than no tank" situation. And they are cheap. Go for less than 200k these days (well before the Ukraine War, I doubt Russia still sells them now).
Apparently, in China there is a factory that has the capability of developing and building ZTZ59 tanks with the freaking 120mm from the Abrams and Leopard 2s. Supposedly no country has made an offer for them and as such they haven't been built yet, but the fact that it can upgraded with the most modern tank gun in current production is a true example of how efficient and long lasting the T-55 platform is.
The Russians are actually still using these in combat that would be about as ridiculous as the United States bringing up old m60s or m48s they're not even near peer anymore
Thing is, they're not going up against tanks, they're being sent to artillery units as guess this, self propelled artillery. They're still worse at that role than a proper artillery system but nowhere near useless.
T--55s are like the Dreadnoughts of the 40k universe. Charging hopelessly into the Ukrainian fray with an untrained crew, about to be torn apart like a tin can against Javelins, TOW-missiles. Leopards and other tanks & weapons: *"Even in death, I STILL SERVE!"*
The T-55s are used for indirect fire/ infantry support by artillery and not for direct tank Duels. Btw, an Abrams or Leopard 2 would be as fucked as any other tank by top-down-attack ATGMs
If the T-55 is the AK-47 of tanks, then the T-72 is the AK-74 of tanks.
I see no lie here
So heavily manufactured, mostly used by dictators and warlords and is totally outclassed when matched against its Western counterparts?
Abrams = scar h. Strv122 = ksp58. Leo = ak4
The pattons would probably be the Ar/m16 of tanks, considering how they've been modernized so much for so many countries, from the stock m48/60 to the Israeli magach series upgrades
@Jake Gore Completely accurate. Its almost like the same people designed them all

Even then, NATO never really had a true mirror of it. All I could say it did have that was almost as ubiquitous was the L7 gun!

@@grainsnseeds Lol I know, but it's a video about military history. Hearing "AK-47" is like hearing M47 when someone is talking about an M48.
Tankenstein. I just want to give you Two thumbs up for your dedication to you community and ideals o7
I like the history format!
Amazing video! you know so much about the topic and you explain the history in a excellent way.
amazing historical video, keep it up man
FANTASTIC video.....thank YOU!!!!
this was a good video :D lots of facts
Honestly, I never expected to see the T-50 to take on any combat role in Modern day Europe.
Will you do a comprehensive guide on all models of the T-54 and T-55? Similar to the Tiger and Panther guides?
Love these history videos.
I’d argue it’s more the AK-56 of tanks
A true ace!
Please do more naval videos

❤❤❤❤❤❤ love it whats next for tank facts
The tank that should have replaced the m3/5 stuart tanks in the mexican military
@Tankenstein Dude we don't use this old junk, M-55s are not comperable, we just dont utilise or even have usable 100/115mm ammo lol

Ohhhh! My apologies. I was saying that it's Russia that's using them, because you guys are wrecking so many of their tanks, haha.
@@Tankenstein no offence taken my friend, thanks for the quality content btw :)
Updating T-55 is similar to what soviets did. Take same tank, upgrade, repeat when outdated. And that how you come to T-90.
The soviets decommissioned the T-34, T-44, IS-Tanks, T-54 and T-55...
@@sovietheart3883 Because they are too weak, and modernizing T-54/55 will be more expensive and time consuming, then just make new T-62`s.
So early

That's bullshit propaganda, the only T-55s on the battlefield are Ukrainian.
The US alone has military budget 24 times bigger than RF, let alone other NATO countries combined.

34 years ago today. CCP used type 59(the Chinese version of T55) to kill protesters at Tiananmen Square.
