First time I’ve seen this clip. My old mate Keith Walwyn (RIP) playing up front for York. What a game. What a result! Keith was like a hero for York. Still miss you Big Man.
I remember this game well. Great atmosphere at Bootham Crescent, imagine today's footballers playing on that pitch. As for Keith Houchen 2 years later he was to make an even bigger impact in the FA Cup.
What brutal winters were then in England! Snow around the football field. How many degrees were there then? The current Messi, C. Ronaldo, Mbappe and others would try to play on such a frozen field without heating.
I was one of the mugs that cleared the pitch so that the game could be played, right behind the goal that arsenal attacked first half, perfect view of the penalty,no arguments.7 hour drive home in silence
To me, like the Hereford vs Newcastle game, this represents everything good about the FA Cup, brilliant atmosphere & a real leveller in a frozen pitch. Sadly it will never be as good as this
Great atmosphere. Some really dated features: I love the catering cart getting in the way of the corner taker. And that pitch wouldn't be passed fit today. Tempo was much higher than today; the game has become much more tactical and positional, but has often lost its cut and thrust.
John Byrne,Keith Houchen and the late Keith Walwyn formed a potent attack that fired York City to the 4th Division (equivalent of today's "League 2") title in 1984 with a new record points haul of 101 that was trumped by a point two year's later by Lou Macari's revitalised Swindon Town. York steamed on to the upper reaches of the 3rd in 1984-85 and 1985-86 but Byrne and Houchen were bought by QPR and Coventry City, both established top flight teams then, respectively. Didn't they lose 7-0 at Anfield in the 5th round after this FA Cup stunner? One other thing I remember seeing on the telly back then is an interview with a spokeman of the York City Supporters' Association,a middle-aged chap with thick-rimmed glasses, lank hair and a physical upkeep not reminiscent of a professional footballer, match ball under his arm, following their trip behind the Iron Curtain for a friendly game in Czechoslovakia after they wrote to the country's football association requesting a team of a similar standard to play against on a trip there. Only the Czechoslovak authorities thought it was a request from the real York City, and matched them up with a team of a similar standing in their leagues. They lost 9-0.
@@rjjcms1 It was actually in Yugoslavia (as it was at that time, around 1989 or 1990). My brother played for the York City Supporters team on that tour. They wore the old York City maroon shirts with a white 'Y' on the front (from the mid 1970s, when York City played in the second tier for 2 seasons).
@@rjjcms1 Slightly odd, but they were amused by the whole thing. The disappointment of being thrashed 0-9 was softened by the copious amounts of alcohol consumed on the tour!
for those old enough to remember football is not as good as it used to be for the following reasons in order, hillsborough, then all the changes to grounds, premier league, too much money in the game, too many foreign players, perfect pitches etc, monotonous rehearsed pitty patty football the game has lost all its variables, character and identity with all due respect how can teams like italy, norway, switzerland etc have players representing them who clearly have african heritage
@@rosscleary9110 Williams clearly impeding Houchen as the cross comes in, ref perfectly placed....... could have bottled it.... but penno, and so no not a dive for me (am a neutral fan).
If by your comment you're referring to Keith Houchen at the end you couldn't be more wrong. It's plain to see as Keith got a yard up on Williams who then proceeded to grab him from behind and Continue into the box when the momentum finally took him down. Absolute stonewall penalty!! HAVE YOU HEARD OF SPECSAVERS? I just cannot believe that you can't see Williams all over Houchen.

Thanks for uploading. I was there, 13 years old and lovin it!
Great game. York thoroughly deserved their win.

The plastic pitch at Maidstone was a good leveller
3:13 what a crowd , real football back then, safer now without a doubt, but good old fashioned stuff.
Loved it mate, surging backwards and forwards...all gone now😢
Such good times ,remember them well but alas now oh dear.
We are York!!

Magnificent!
when they went to full time on tv i remember the gooners were walking round the pitch chanting gooners as the commentater done his report haha
Pitch just makes crave the Goalden days of old. York's win justified tbf.👍
Paul Mariner sent me here. He's right, that pitch looks horrendous. Don't know how they're out there in those tiny shorts too being how cold it is LOL
RIP Messrs Mariner,Walwyn and Caton (he was only 30).
@@rjjcms1 Well said tragic losses.
RIP John Motson ❤️
A genuine cup upset, not the sort you get today thanks to big teams playing reserve/youth sides.
When football was better.
So why isn't football played on pitches like this anymore?
American football doesn't cancel games over field conditions...
People from back then would think we'd gone soft.
American football is not played on grass
What was the penalty given for?
Put Messi on this pitch and he’ll be ordinary like the rest
When City had a decent team
