  • At 300 pounds with tracks, this 270cc, Honda powered, 3 forward, 1 reverse/neutral transmission, 2.2"-3.8" adjustable flail height machine, with 38 reversible flail blades that have breakoff bolts to minimize the chances of damage is a solid machine. Figure the worst that will happen is you need to replace blades or belts: everything else seemed solid (nice heavy gauge steel). We tried it, we poked, prodded it, pushed it and I brought a buddy in who does a lot of gardening to mess with it and short of it being a riding flail mower or track hoe, he was impressed. In short: he liked it, I liked it. Quality is there and if you have ever done major cutting, tracks are a must on slippery plant material. Pulls material into the flail instead of using a large spinning blade. It produced a fine mince and except for user error, performed as it should without problems. Enough power to drive the high flail count and high flail count made salsa out of everything. Took about 10 minutes for us to get a feel for it. Video by www.seattletoolrental.com Nice tool: we recommend own or rent.

    the major thing this has going for it isnt even mentioned...
    it fit thru the gate so the homeowner can clear the hill in his back yard.
    having no access to the back means only certain machines fit.

    I've got the smallest DR, 24" mower, and have mowed same stuff as in the video plus small trees (2" diameter). Did a cleaner job and quicker. Also, can move mine without having to start the motor to engage the track since it has wheels. All for only 2,000 bucks. DR is one tough machine.

      Flail mower, circular mower, two different animals. I don't like the circular as it winds up the yard debris vs. flail chops ... that is my opinion. Also, tracked vs. wheeled two different animals. Knowing what I know now, I would always pay for tracked absent knowing I would use the machine only for a uniform, level area.

    My Etesia 56 Pro eats grass like that at double the speed. Although the flex blade clutch can take abuse, it ain't gonna like entire bricks like this machine can eat.

    Check out the new models of Outback ... anyway, still say a flail forward spinning mower is a different creature than the bladed ones you are fond of, or a sickle mower for that matter. Really depends on what your doing. Thanks for you opinion.

    This is going to sound crazy, but I have some thoughts. Whenever I see brush this high I'm afraid to mow it because of rocks or downed logs. How would a flail mower hold up to those items? Are there built in safeties or something? I would love to buy one but don't want to spend the money to break the money.

    • @robertrhodes20
      @robertrhodes20  8 років тому

      +MrMasterMarksman As it has spinning flails, you would break flail blades by running them into rocks enough times or the right way. That said, the flails are attached by break away bolts, so before you break the drum they are attached too, I believe you would break the bolt and just need to replace a blade/bolt. As to stumps or logs, you would probably be relying on the clutch to prevent damage. Cant speak to that. Perhaps someone else who reads this can ?

    What's the price?
    How's it do on hills?
    How about if you hit a rock, large and small?

      Around $3200, the tracks on this are amazing but like most of these machines, they warn you not to use on slopes over 20 degrees (partially probably to prevent rolling and a good friend of mine pointed out that when you exceed 20 degrees, sometimes there is problems with the oil pump picking up oil). In terms of hitting a rock, it all depends. The flail blades will break away but if you hit a big enough one in the right spot, you could damage more than a blade and that means either welding or replacement of an expensive part. Honestly, simplest answer is don't hit big rocks with any flail mower and if you do, pray you didn't hit the wrong spot.

    hi. can this equipment shred/sugarcane leaves?

    • @robertrhodes20
      @robertrhodes20  8 років тому

      Not sure. Hopefully the manufacturer reads this and can give feedback. This machine will shred blackberries, which notoriously wind up on a mower type (spinning blade like a helicopter) arrangement. This tends to pull in and destroy whatever. I think the big issue is how stringy the material is ….

    i'm looking for a machine for mtb trails - the brush is fairly heavy and tall ( 8ft - 1 inch diameter) would it pull it in and mulch that ? i can use roundup for grass. i don't see much heavy brush
    (mostly grass) Also could it be used without wheels ?

      The unit shown was tracked and tracked is great because it has enough force to run up on things. It could and would mulch grass and 1" saplings as long as the machine can push them far enough over to get the flail blades to connect with the base of the sapling. It should feed and grind the saplings it downs. You should demo before you buy and bring one of the sapling with you to feed into the machine so you get an idea of how effective this machine really is.

    an Fs560 with a blade would make a cleaner cut.

    • @robertrhodes20
      @robertrhodes20  8 років тому

      +Brent Hill Not really ... the cut is level and uniform with this machine and the end product is already reduced to fine chop vs. cut and knocked down. That being said, plenty of times Stihl's Fs560 is a good idea, but clearing large flat areas ... you can do it but it isn't anywhere as efficient in my opinion.

    A small compact tractor with a PTO flail Mower would be much better and have more uses. You'll wished you spent the extra money later.

      I think it all depends on what your looking to do but I agree, what you suggest is excellent if this is what you need and are willing to budget for.

    This is way to slow. There are much better brush mowers on a market.

  • @JamesTyreeII
    @JamesTyreeII 10 років тому

    This is too slow and does a poor job of cutting.Also pricey for a walk behind machine.

    • @robertrhodes20
      @robertrhodes20  10 років тому

      What were you cutting? What machine did you find a better mix of quality and price? Like to know my options. I found cheaper, but this meant a thinner gauge steel or no tracks and more expensive mean a hydraulic transmission. Otherwise, go to lawnmower type spinning blade, but this is a totally different kind of machine. Thoughts? I found that since it pulls and minces, the final product rots easily and is not full of un-chopped twigs. Didn't like the lawnmower type spinning blade models because the finished product is coarse and it tends to "wind" up the material instead of pulling it in the way the flail mower does, but I can see how people like it as I believe it is a bit faster as it doesn't need to cut as much (spins two blades vs. 38 flails). Also, biggest complaint I heard was if you break a flail, replace it or it throws off the balance of the tube they are mounted on and that can get pricey.

      Robert Rhodes The DR Field & Brush Mower does a better job of cutting cleanly.It is on the expensive side, but durable versatile and comfortable to use. I use one and have used several different models since 2001 and they are wonderful. The only machine better is a tractor and bush hog.

    • @robertrhodes20
      @robertrhodes20  10 років тому

      Damn near the same price on a untracked machine and the DR is a lighter gauge steel as I remember it. Also this is a flail mower that spins and pulls material in, DR is like the outback, it is an oversized lawnmower. I respect your opinion, but different machines. I do like the Outback (also a spinning blade) quite a bit, seems to be built sturdier than the DR line. I had a friend who loved the outback over the flail because it was faster, but, as she had to concede, the flail mower produces a finer and more level chop. Its all tradeoffs. Thanks for the feedback.

      I have used the Outback by Billy Goat and it sucks! There is only a 24" width of cut, it often bogs don and slips the belt, doesn't cut well, has no oscillating deck and is under powered and uncomfortable to run. The control bars have very strong springs which are painful to use. The DR is tops!
