Exactly 10 years ago today, as I celebrated my 50th birthday, I thought about the half-century I had lived up until then and said, ``I am filled with a strange feeling. Before I knew it, 10 years had passed since then It's gone.
Although the last 10 years may seem to have passed in the blink of an eye, I also feel that they have been 10 years filled with various events and changes in society that I had not anticipated before. Just 10 years ago, the Great East Japan Earthquake caused unprecedented damage, and many people lost their lives and were affected by the disaster. Along with the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, which occurred not long after I joined the Imperial Family 30 years ago, this was a reality that I had to accept with great shock and deep sadness.
Since then, our country has been repeatedly hit by major disasters, including the Kumamoto earthquake seven years ago, as well as natural disasters such as typhoons and heavy rain. How impressed we were to see how people came together, joined hands, and helped each other to overcome their sorrows and face hardships. At times like these, I felt deeply grateful for the warm support and goodwill I received from so many people from all over Japan and overseas.
When we look around the world, we are deeply saddened by the loss of many people's lives, including children, due to wars and conflicts all over the world. At present, I am concerned that division and conflict are deepening within the international community. In order to build a peaceful world, I once again realize how important it is for people to strive to understand the situations of others through dialogue and to cooperate while respecting each other.
The world has also experienced large-scale disasters such as earthquakes and floods this year. Major earthquakes have struck Turkey, Syria, Morocco, and Afghanistan, leaving many people dead, injured, or forced to flee their homes. Natural disasters that are believed to be associated with global warming are occurring frequently around the world, such as damage caused by heavy rains, wildfires, and severe droughts. We believe that global environmental issues such as climate change are one of the most pressing issues that we must seriously address while working together.In Japan, amid concerns about future occurrences of Nankai Trough earthquakes and earthquakes directly hitting the Tokyo metropolitan area, this year, which marks exactly 100 years since the Great Kanto Earthquake, various awareness-raising activities about disaster prevention and mitigation have been carried out. I felt strongly. On the other hand, it was unfortunate that natural disasters such as earthquakes, heavy rain, and typhoons occurred in various parts of the country this year as well. We would like to express our sincere condolences to those who lost their lives and their bereaved families and extend our sympathies to those affected by the disaster. These days, there are many heart-wrenching times, but at the same time, there are people in various parts of society, including young people, who are steadily carrying out various activities for people in need and for a better world. There are many people out there, and I feel that I can rely on them, and I am often impressed and encouraged by their goodwill and ingenuity.
Our visits to local areas have resumed since last year, and in Rikuzentakata City, Ofunato City, and Kamaishi City in Iwate Prefecture, where we visited in June to attend the National Tree Planting Festival, many people from the disaster-stricken areas visited Despite the difficulties of relaxation.I was moved by the incredible effort he has made. I sincerely hope that the disaster-stricken areas will achieve true recovery in the future, and I have renewed my desire to continue to pay close attention to the disaster-stricken areas. In September, we visited Hokkaido for the National Sea Creation Competition, and in October, we will be visiting Kagoshima Prefecture for the Special National Athletic Meet, and Ishikawa Prefecture for the National Cultural Festival and the National Arts and Culture Festival for People with Disabilities. I was able to experience the unique characteristics of each region and gain a renewed sense of the richness of this country's nature, climate, history, and culture. I also received a warm welcome from many people wherever I went. It was also very rewarding to be able to listen directly to the stories of various people at each location.
