    The real way of blending colors using oil pastel is not smudging using your fingers or tissues. You must put some force when you're using oil pastels, starting from darkest to lightest, and then mix them in circular motion. The result will be more colorful and vibrant. :)

    I just realised my art teacher at school has taught me all the wrong fundamentals of oil pastels and I've always blamed myself for unsatisfactory drawings.. Lol.

      My teacher told me to not smudge, because it makes it look watered down and dull. There are many different ways to blend correctly. Normally, you apply in this order: Dark, Base, Light. You then use the base oil pastel and blend over the other colors you want blended in small circular motions. He told us this and I used it. He loved the drawings I made with the technique. Smudging does not look as good as normal blending. This video is promoting that, and it is sad to see.

    • @radiantpudding4457
      @radiantpudding4457 4 роки тому +3

      @@NourBira probably because the colors your putting over the top are slightly transparent then the ones underneath, and for oil pastel sometimes it helps to let the lower layers dry otherwise you end up mixing the layers together instead of laying one over the other. Or you can just use white!

      I did both with dry pastels. I got right in there. I'm not shy 😉l think as long as you get the end result your after that's all that counts. One of the most hilarious things was my first time using charcoal. Oh my gosh, got into a right mess! It was everywhere! Lol 🤭 all over me, yet so little on the paper. All over my clothes, legs and arms and even big black streaks across my face where Id tried to swipe my hair off my face probably, I don't remember how it got all over my face! 😳 Was so funny! The joys of being creative! But then it's supposed to be fun and therapeutic, and it sure is, especially if you can have a laugh along the way. Good medicine for the soul! ☺️🎨🖌️

      Yep, got my daughter some $4 ones...after trying those, I'm surprised the $3 ones in the video blended at all. Couldn't layer colours, had to push as hard or harder than crayons to get any colour at all, and so very unpigmented and transparent - like those cheap crayons (not the crayola) that kids get in restaurants.

    I’m really amazed on the results of the artwork when utilizing oil pastels. I have observed that oil pastels have a creamy quality when applied to a surface, somehow looking like a combination of crayons and lipsticks. The result, specifically the blending of the colors is pleasant to the eyes. Oil pastel art is usually more on the creative blending, smudging, and rubbing of colors based on one’s taste. Moreover, the pastel paper which is made for oil pastels really helps in grabbing or fully attaining the peak color performance of the oil pastels.

    Hey! How do you finish the painting and make sure that all pastels are secured on the paper? I tried a fixative spray one time and it ruined my painting (turned it black)! Thank you!!

    I am an oil pastel artist. I use my fingers. I also melt my colors together on my wood stove. I'm using oil pastels on canvas. I use all white in the canvas to start like gesso. Unfortunately I can't share an image here.

    I bought those artist loft ones and ended up throwing them away, mainly cause I didn’t know what the hell I was doing. I now have a much softer and creamier set and I’m ready to learn.

    I have a 25-piece set of Daler-Rowney oil pastels that i bought from Walmart just to play around with. I've never used oil pastels before. I try to just buy from walmart nowadays cause i got out of art for such a long time i lost all my skills. Any specific, affordable but nice brands of paper or pastels i can buy next time i need some? Like what a craft store might sell, like Michaels. Also is it acceptable to blend oil pastels with Q-tips cause while i have blending stumps (i think that's what they're called) they get dirty quickly and idk how to sharpen or clean them....
