I'm an old (70) Professional wildlife & portrait artist, I have taught classes, know all the "RULES", and decided I wanted a loose abstract landscapes done with the oil pastels, for that awesome rich wild colors...I'm thoroughly ENJOYING your lessons, researching all the lessons to apply when I dig into the work...Bing watching your videos! Just wanted to THANK YOU for all the great videos for FREE, I could never afford lessons, and I'm just so GREATFUL for them!!!
This tutorial made me see oil pastel paintings as equivalent to oil paintings. Loved learning from this video and made a lovely painting myself. My family and friends are all praises for my this painting. Thanks Matt for such an inspiration.
@Simran Singh ua-cam.com/channels/qCf_JHBbWm5l8lZjQ_IckQ.html ...and also ua-cam.com/users/raizes two very good channels completely dedicated to Oil Pastel
I always wondered how i could layer colors with oil pastels especially since i work with a limited palette and this video was very helpful. Now i'm gonna start using textured paper and hopefully it will make it easier.
Amazing!! I'd love to see more impressionist oil pastel videos. Can we have a video on the basics of impressionist landscape with oil pastel for Absolutely beginners? I'm experimenting with oil pastel but I need to learn a lot. Thank you so much. I love the painterly look too.
You are amazing. I already did two oil pastel pictures based on your videos, this is one of them. It's unbelievable how fast one can progress with a great tutor. Keep up the good work and thank you very much!
Wonderful video. I have been thinking about having a break from watercolour and trying out oil pastels, or watercolour background with a pastel subject/foreground. I love the expression you can achieve with this medium. You demonstrated how to use the pastels effectively which is incredibly helpful. Thank you for a lovely video :)
Wow !!! This is the most informative video I have found so far regarding how to use oil pastels in general aside from getting that painterly look …thank you
Love this tutorial. Gorgeous landscape. I would love a place like that to just sit with my dog and shut out the world. It looks heavy. Thank you for this. I never tried oil pastels before I wasn't really sure what to do and how to use them. They kind of intimidated me until I saw this tutorial. Thank you. I no longer feel intimidated but rearing to go and try it. What can possibly go wrong. Well the week I'm having now. Everything!!🤣🤣🤣🤣. But at least I will have tried and made that first move and keep trying and hopefully get better. We all have to start somewhere. Thanks again. God bless Susan 👍👏🎨🙏🙏🙏🌞🌞🌞
Very good, very informative video. I’m drawn to oil pastel. As an oil and acrylic painter who has a strong background in soft pastel in my former incarnation, I’m fascinated with this medium. Your tutorial is much more ‘informing’ in their use. Thank you. I will be following you and your tutorials on this subject… 💖
Really enjoyed this! Wonderful skills that you have shared. It is amazing to see the beautiful landscape emerging from the meticulous "brush"strokes.... I hope I'll be able to learn these skills...... Thank you so much and Best regards.
I’m truly enjoying your teaching… You’ve ‘showed up’ as I’ve just decided that oil pastel with possibly experimenting with a watercolor under painting has taken root… Your work is amazing as is exactly what I was looking for and needed. Trying to decide which brand of pastels right now. Your suggestions have helped there, as well. Thank you 🙏
Thank you so much for this! 🙏 I got a set of oil pastels way back, but never got round to it! I will now though! 🎨 You gave me the kickstart I needed for this medium - so greatful! ❤ I will definetely check out your website too! ⚘
Ooo, Yikes! I just traveled to your UA-cam page and see that you actually don’t have a collection of videos on the subject of oil pastel. I hope you do more eventually. In the meantime, I believe I can convert some of your videos in painting in oil as well as some of your drawing videos into instruction that will help with my education on oil pastel. Again, thanks for this one. Very good 👍🏼
Beautiful! I use dry pastels but love oil painting so I will try some oil pastels. I think it would respond to oms and textural things that a palette knife might be fun to use. I come from a watercolor color background yet loved oil painting and with the cost of supplies, this might be as close as it gets for me. Thank you.
Super useful info! I am totally new to oil pastels and this video was awesome! Thanks man!! As always, I can count on your videos to learn me something new!!;)
Love this way of using oil pastels for texture and vibrancy of not smoothly blended colors but would you kindly give any suggestions for managing oil, pastels paintings? I bought a spray fixative for oil, pastels but wondering how long would I have to wait for such thickness of stuffs to dry. Please help me. Thank you for your sharing
Thank you this is extremely helpful, I bought some polyurethane to make layers of pastel but I should probably invest in some good cold press (?) paper
This is great, thanks so much. I'm wondering why you use orange paper? I personally find the orange bits peeking through to be distracting, but is that the effect you're going for?
Consider being more painterly by first building a tonal underpainting with a first layer of oil pastel with the addition of an alkyd gel like Resngel rubbed into the first layer of oil pastel. Better integration is achieved. Your use of. lues is very nice.
Wonderful instruction and “painting”! How do you finish an oil pastel “painting” - frame with glass?....”varnish”? ...frame w/o glass? Does an oil Patel eventually “dry” so that the painting is permanent?
You can finish the painting by spraying fixative over it. This will prevent the artwork from smudging or getting ruined. If you don't want to use fixative, then you can frame the piece to protect it.
Super excited for this demo, will be trying today! The only thing I wish is that you would suggest a substrate that's amenable to oil pastels. I found when I used this paper on your last demo of poppies that the oils leaked right through. Thanks for the lesson regardless!
I’ve been experimenting with using acrylic pens in various colors to make the finer, more detailed marks. There just doesn’t seem like there’s a big enough variety in colors and shades… So, it’s touch and go with this ‘fix’. What would you suggest ?

The oil pastel landscape with tree is awesome. You are so talented Matt. Thanks again. Another Matt here in San Diego.
This is fantastic, thank you! Looking all over for a video on oil pastels. Hopefully you'll make more!
Thank you! Will do!

Wow, brilliant work. I have been painting for about a year and someone just gifted me a set of oil pastels. This was very inspiring.
I always wondered how i could layer colors with oil pastels especially since i work with a limited palette and this video was very helpful. Now i'm gonna start using textured paper and hopefully it will make it easier.

Amen about color names...lets use value and color to describe. Thank you!
Wow !!! This is the most informative video I have found so far regarding how to use oil pastels in general aside from getting that painterly look …thank you
I adore you! You are a wonderful artist! Oh my God! The landscape is beautiful! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!🙏🏻😍🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

Wow, you helped a lot.I sold it all to everyone to make money. They all like it and thanks
Just finished my paintig. I am quite talent free, but it looks great! Thank you very much, this was really helpful!
Really enjoyed this! Wonderful skills that you have shared. It is amazing to see the beautiful landscape emerging from the meticulous "brush"strokes.... I hope I'll be able to learn these skills...... Thank you so much and Best regards.
You are a fabulous teacher, your work is beautiful! You have inspired me to pick up my oil pastels once again, my favorite medium when I was a kid.
Thanks a lot, it's so awesome for a beginner like me! I haven't seen oil pastels used this way and I love it. I feel tempted to try it!
You are the king of oil pastels! Such a joy to watch! Thank you :)
Wow this is amazing! This is by far the best explanation of how to use oil pastels I have ever seen! Thank you!
Matt rewatching as I love the guitar music and to see you do oil pastels. Hope you have more oil pastels before 2020 is over. A favorite for sure.
Thank you so much for helping a soft pastel beginner such as myself. I FINALLY got it! Yay!!!

Looks great! Thank you for sharing this and for your detailed explanation. This may be my cue to get those oil pastels out and give it another try.
I just bought a small pack of oil pastels to try them. This video couldn’t have come at a better time!
Wow, your explanations are so helpful! I have never used oil pastel and would like to learn. Thank you for helping us with your instruction.
Merci infiniment pour cette excellente démonstration ! 👍
Thank you so much for this! 🙏 I got a set of oil pastels way back, but never got round to it! I will now though! 🎨 You gave me the kickstart I needed for this medium - so greatful! ❤ I will definetely check out your website too! ⚘
Love this. I think I have my project for the holiday break! Thank you 😊
Love the music thanks
As I’ve just statutes ive turned the sound off..
That way I can learn just by watching you all the best.
Learnt so much with just one video! Thanks a lot
This was something really superb...👍👍.. I’m so very inspired I’m going to dust my pastels which were lying back for quite sometime
Wow, it looks like my potentially future favorite medium. ❤❤ . I will definitely try learning it.. it looks so amazing like a real oil painting
I really like your videos. Please do more videos on oil pastels and soft pastels.
still helpful 2 years later!! took notes though the whole thing, now am gonna try to do it myself
Beautiful can't believe oil pastels can work so amazingly 😘❤️👌👌
It's far more better than any other oil pastel videos on UA-cam!
Thank you!
I just got a box of oil pastels for Christmas. Never having used them I found your tutorial so helpful. Now to try it on my own. Thanks so much.

Thank you Sir. Wonderful work. Excellent teaching style
What kind of oil pastels do you use to have that kind of texture
Excellent video and thank you for the tutorial. How can we sign an oil pastel painting, supposing we have no white paper area left?
Thank you this is extremely helpful, I bought some polyurethane to make layers of pastel but I should probably invest in some good cold press (?) paper
It looks like a painting. Nice
Very beautiful. Love your technique. I have problems with detail. You sure don't.. Lovely, O
Very beautiful painting! Have a question : in what circumstances use brown paper, in what circumstances use white paper ? 🙏
What type of fixative or varnish do you use? It's a question, thank you for your video and your answer.
Great tutorial, and so inspirational!!!
I've tried oil pastels several times and didn't like them or my results. I'll be trying again with this. Thank you
You’re welcome 😊
Quality of pastels really matter a lot when it comes to oil pastels.
It’s gorgeous.

Awesome tutorial, I love oil pastels but it's difficult medium, hope for more oil pastels tutorials 😀

This was a wonderful lesson!
Pls do you have any pictures of roots in oil pastel
This is great, thanks so much. I'm wondering why you use orange paper? I personally find the orange bits peeking through to be distracting, but is that the effect you're going for?
AWesome landscape!!

Can you please tell me what type of oil pastel painting should paint on dark color pastel paper.?
Wow! Thanks for that
Está um espetáculo lindíssimo trabalho parabéns 😊
thank you! so inspiring!
Great video. But would love to see the source image while you worked. Thanks
Thank u for such an amazing idea
Hi, Math, thank you for your videos - you do amazing job. But is it possible to have image of drawing pictures on the screen in some corner?
is it better to move from light to dark or dark to light
Wonderful instruction and “painting”! How do you finish an oil pastel “painting” - frame with glass?....”varnish”? ...frame w/o glass? Does an oil Patel eventually “dry” so that the painting is permanent?

Hi Joshua, Hmmm, that's strange. I've used this paper for many years without any issues. Did you use oil pastels or oil sticks?
how do you take care of an oil pastel painting? do you use some kind of fixative?
I’ve been experimenting with using acrylic pens in various colors to make the finer, more detailed marks. There just doesn’t seem like there’s a big enough variety in colors and shades… So, it’s touch and go with this ‘fix’. What would you suggest ?
Wow, this was excellent, thank you! I hope I one day can afford these superior oil pastels. What set did you have (how many colors)?
