Thank you for this demonstration. I was able to quickly and easily raise the action on my new SG Special and it sounds so nice. A few straight-forward minutes of instruction that helped tremendously.
Hi! Have you experienced sound detunning when playing this model, when you just put a little preassure on the neck? Mine's neck is extremely sensitive, it will bend and detune the sound..,I dont know if all SGs are like this or if my neck is broken :/ Thanks!!!
Mine sustains so beautifully I would enter in the Olympic Sustaining Event (if there was one) .. BUT the intonation was impossible without upgrading the bridge to a Nashville Type for more adjustment. A better nut, tuners upgrade and some nice pots later and now it is quite wonderful. The pickups aren't actually too bad so they can stay.
Mine came with 500 k pots. I have the Epiphone SG G400 Pro. I like the pickups too. The only thing I didnt like was the Epiphone Deluxe tuners. Swapped 'em out for vintage Grovers for $35.
This one is loud unplugged, good sign. I wish I could get into SG's. I like classic shapes too (have a Tele, Strat, Les Paul) but I think if I was buying today it would be Gibby or Heritage semi hollow.
Tune-o-Matics are frustrating to me as only the E and e string height can be easily adjusted -- A, D, G and B just "go along for the ride" and you hope they're close enough. Any thoughts about filing individual (A, D, G or B) saddle slot(s) if needed - ? What if an individual saddle has to be raised - ?
I got one of these, bought from the internet not B&M store. Had to turn both sides down 2 entire turns. It was up so high I could barely play stuff around the 17th fret.
I am a total noob, but when I tried to practice on the exact same guitar SG G400 , the strings seem to be so damn high from the neck all I was hearing was buzzing and messed up sound, even though my guitar was tuned by me with a digital tuner. The 0 notes sounded perfectly fine, but when I pressed down on the strings, the few ones from the head towards the middle of neck were not bad, but not perfect, but the rest from 12th to the lower ones were impossible to play, the strings seem to be extremely high and being pushed upwards by that metal bit I can adjust with screws. Now to ask a question. Does adjusting the action to be lower will make learning and practicing easier ? Will the finger action fret thing be more forgiving and easier to do ? Thank you if you read my comment and replied :)
It looks like you enjoyed playing the SG. Probably the best benefit of working on people’s guitars is that you get to play them. That was a nice and easy setup. Just adjust to get the action a little lower and done :D
I love these faded vintage type SG400....nice feel. I think the new ones come with upgraded Alnico Classic in neck and Classic Plus in brige... pickups.
sir what is the string guage of E-6 A-5 D-4 g-3 b-2 e-1 the b string was totaly cut. i have epiphone G-400 SG. iwant to replace them all of my string but im confuse to what i used string and what is exactly the guage.
Hello I was hoping you could help me. I have an Epiphone Les Paul and I have one major problem... The truss rod has stripped, however I can get a it to turn with a screw driver. I really need to get the damaged nut out of there and replaced, I can't find any information whatsoever. I managed to loosen the truss rod a lot but for some reason it appeared to tighten again. What I really need to know is do these truss rod nuts actually come off? If I turns out they don't come off and I have to remove the fingerboard to replace the rod, I had one or two worries about that and that is the size of truss rod I would need to replace it with. The other thing is if I use a steam iron to remove it will that not melt the binding? The reason I'm asking you is because I know you have much experience with these kind of jobs. Any help at all with this will be greatly appreciated. Regards DemonX
Thanks for the tips! I got an SG recently and it was a bit uncomfortable pushing down on the strings, so I was trying to figure out how to lower the action so the strings would be closer. BTW, I love how you're an AC/DC fan:)
I have a Gibson sg and it doesn’t have the flat head screw slot in the bridge pole!! I guess just hand turning the little wheelie things works the same huh?
I notice The bridge is backwards as opposed to a Gibson sg. Gibson the adjusters on the bridge face the tail, epiphone they face the pickup. Any reason for that?
I think hes saying that it was turned around at the store to get better intonation. when i saw this, it clicked in my head. i didn't know i could do that. i just got a jazzmaster and had to turn my bridge around on it and get perfect intonation. ill try it on my sg next when i change strings
I've got an Epiphone SG and am out of range lowering the action. The low E is right at 6/64 but the high E is 7/64 which of course is way to high. Any suggestions?
Is the high E too high at the nut? It's easy to run an old string through the nut slot to cut it down so the action on that string improves, you just make sure not to overdo it or you will have fret buzz, but thing is the stock nut is a cheap plastic that works but would be better upgraded anyway so why not mod it yourself first, if it works fine if not an upgrade nut won't break the bank approx 15 bucks.
I just bought a new guitar and it plays pretty well except for the high e string. Strangely it buzzes (chokes actually) only when I press down the 2nd and 4th fret. It plays well on every other fret. Any idea what that could be?
Anyone know what the string height at the 12 fret is in millimetres as I haven't got the right tools for the job been trying to do my SG vibrola by ear 👂 haha
@@WoodesosGuitarMods hey sir...i have an SG G400 , bought it yesterday, im a total beginner and it seemed to be very hard to play on the neck. I tried to follow your video, but to no avail, I failed horribly bad as my guitar now sounds awful when I press the strings down on the frets, there is buzzing sound, and even the amp makes a weird noise when i slightly touch the strings. I think I broke my guitar I knew i shouldnt have messed with this, all i wanted was lower action , but I wont touch it any further, I hope I will find someone online who can properly set it up for me.
I've got an epiphone sg 400 pro the 1966 edition I've tried to set it up done everything by the book but the notes on the A and the E string after the 12th fret are dead and only sound with high action which is not what I want what can I try to correct this issue thanks
I think we may have talked on another channel, but I just changed my strings to a lower gauge, 9's instead of 10's and I got buzzing on the low E and A string from about the 7th fret and lower. Going back to tens fixed it. BTW, I have the exact same guitar as you.
funkyou thats such a BS statement. Epiphone is great for a low income players, made almost exactly like Gibsons, for a fraction of the price. Anyone can mod and adjust as needed. you dint need to pay extra for a brand. The music comes from you, not the guitar. The best thign you can do to help your tone is to evolve a good technique and get a good amp. As for Epiphone SGs, they are excellent. Usually require a set up agter purchase, but after that they are real workhorses.
Its SG400 Epiphone Faded Cherry. Looks exactly same as mine i just got from a Pawn Shop in Aus $350 looks like new condition with nice black velvet case, lead and strap. But mine has inlay on the neck of pearl along each side the one in video has not that’s the only difference.
a lot of epiphone are setup and have perfect intonation right out of the box and some of the models being set up here in the US so maybe not the store that did the setup however I'm not a luthier like you
Appreciate this! CAN YOU HELP ME?!! I have the same guitar that my brother in law gave me. It sat around collecting dust for I dont know how long. I cannot for the life of me get this thing fixed in regards to intonation. HELP!!
Tune your guitar up. Whatever note the open string is, it should be in tune to the same note on the 12th fret. If its sharp at the 12th, screw the screw at the saddle, (where the string goes on top of the bridge) clockwise until it's in tune. If flat, clockwise.
I hav a newer 400pro sg , is there a replacement bridge u might reccomend , nothing wrong the stock 1 really , i could b OCD , im always changing things on every thing lol . Useful vid . Thx
I had a epiphone SG with the three humbuckers, someone broke the wood around the input jack and I got it for next to nothing. Loved the sound it made and kick myself for selling it!
The push pull pots are actually awesome for shaping your tone, not bs

SG's are so underrated. Slab of Mahogany, two pickups, let's go. Rock and roll.

I have. However it only happened as I played while laying on my bed, it would sound a slight whammy bar.
It has gone away though..

looked nice and light too. had a nice ring unplugged at the end. :)
It's the g400 worn cherry. Some of the best $200 I've ever spent.

I have this exact guitar, and have problems specifically with g string staying in tune. Cant figure out what's going on. Any advice out there?
bak 138 same man
The nut might need adjustment.
Buy a new nut. Mine used to go out of tune every single time I touched it for 5 minutes. New nut and new strings solved all my issues with it.
Tuner
That's how all SGs and Les Pauls are. Just tune a bit sharp or flat

Where did you get the tool you used to measure the action? Seems easier than combining feeler gauges to get string height.
Perfect. Thanks!
The SG pro has the Epiphone Elnico Classic Pro Humbucker in nickel, a quality copy of the Gibson 57" Humbucker.

How much were these new ?
Tryed to setup but when I play Barr chords up the neck it's out of tune when play d or g up the neck in the first 3 frets it's in tune is neck damaged
I have terrible fret buzz due to ridiculously low action on my SG, do i spin the bridge screw clockwise or counter clockwise to raise the action?
counter clockwise and detune/loosen the string tension first

codica666 that's probably a problem with the truss rod. Unless you have experience I'd recommend taking it into a store to get it fixed
how did you do the vibrato thing on the first riff?
wiggle all my fingers? It's unconscious..
Anyone know what the string height at the 12 fret is in millimetres as I haven't got the right tools for the job been trying to do my SG vibrola by ear 👂 haha
My cheap 90s epiphone sg is currently set up like a lap steel guitar. I can measure the action in inches.
Shouldn't the truss rod adj be checked before adjusting the action?
yes
would that work for an epi 339 pro? still fighting with action and truss rod adj! cool guitar BTW!
Yes:-)
OK cool thanks!
What was the name of that song you teased us with on the outro? Also - the band name?
AC/DC - Rock N Roll Singer at the beginning and at the end it's Back in Black.
Thanks for the reply. 😊

Tune your guitar up.
Whatever note the open string is, it should be in tune to the same note on the 12th fret.
If its sharp at the 12th, screw the screw at the saddle, (where the string goes on top of the bridge) clockwise until it's in tune. If flat, clockwise.
@@12south31 sharp clockwise, flat clockwise ????
