I don't have the Gibson truss rod tool, but being that it's a 5/16 tool, I tried my 5/16 quarter inch socket and it worked like a charm. Thanks so much for all the measurements.. They make my guitar sound so much better, even though I still suck.
Excellent setup guide that I've just used on my Korean epiphone SG ( exact dimensions of the Gibson) and sir it is now perfect. Thank you and it will be my go to guide
Very cool brother, thanks for this vid. I’ve been playing a Yamaha SA1100 for 33 years and its been faithful- just got the 61’ Epiphone like your showing today. Been playing music all my life and always have a tech for settings. First time i want to do my own so thanks again. Simple and to the point!👍
Thanks for this video - transformed my SG which hadn't been set up since buying. I think they must have set it up quickly by eye. The difference in feel and sound is amazing - like having a new guitar. Thanks again!
Thank you for this video, it was extremely helpful, I’m a beginner player and have an SG, I’ve never been happy with it even though it was set up by the guitar store, it had buzzy strings, having followed your video I now have a guitar that is a joy to play, no string buzz, feels easy to play, nothing was set right! I had to adjust the truss rod fir more relief, and adjust the bridge height which was too low and the pick up height, it’s hard to believe the set up by the guitar store was so bad!
This is very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to go through this procedure. I intend to setup my SG with 11-52s and tuned to a B standard. This will be very helpful when I go to do that. I just need to pick up a string height gauge from the local GC beforehand. 🤓
Thanks for the detailed instructions! I have a '96 Samickn SG that is in perfect tune, but sounds like crap when I play chords. I ordered one of those setup gauges last night and will be doing a full setup check once it arrives.
Hi found your video really helpful, I have a old replica SG no name no nothing and it has a Bigsby style tremolo bar, the guitar belonged to my late brother who died in a motorcycle accident and it has been in our loft for 40 years and now I have decided to learn to play it, but it needs all the electrics and every thing reset, I have now followed your video and hope I can set it up and make it play, thanks.
I wanted to buy one of these Gibson SG Standard '61 Maestro Vibrola in Vintage Cherry for a while. I went down to my local Guitar center here in Las Vegas and they had one in stock. I held it, the neck is outstanding the fret work is wonderful, the wood grain and color were so beautiful. I tuned it up and played a few cords and check the tuning, for sure it was out of tune. I fooled around trying to keep it in tune for three hours and became totally discouraged because this guitar was beautiful. So I did the only reasonable thing, I said to the salesman I am going to flip this Guitar Center pick, "blank side it stays here written side I buy it". It landed on written side so home with me it went, and boy am I glad it did. The next day I set out to find out why it wouldn't stay in tune and I discovered why, (fixed it) and now it's hard to knock it out of tune. First the tuning keys were loose and the screws holding the tuners on were striped from the factory, so i fixed that. Second the angle on the Vibrola is wrong from the factory, you need to tweak the angle and shim the Vibrola slightly, the E-string should not be touching the trem bar while in the resting position. Now i polish the frets and did a complete set up. This guitar now when using the Vibrola as intended will stay in tune wonderfully. This guitar is a great guitar and if you take the time and put in the work to set it up properly, YOU WILL LOVE THIS GUITAR! I think that from the factory they just assemble the parts and are done, not realizing or having the time that it needs to make this fine guitar function together as a whole instrument. Glad I took the time and made the purchase. This is an amazing Gibson Guitar after the corrections are made. I Have no connection with Gibson and I am not a professional Luthier, so if i can fix it this guitar is fixable. Thank you
I had to do the same with my SG standard,i wish now that i'd gotten the maestro, but i thing it's a disgrace that after paying a lot of cash for such an instrument,we either have to remedy it ourselves or pay someone else to do it for us!!!that's just so wrong,it's like buying a new car and having to take it to a mechanic to make it drive as it should have when we first bought it!!
Personally, I am a huge fan of top-wrapping. I have to add an extra rivet from old strings so it wraps over the tail-piece correctly. But overall, I only play SGs, my favorite of all guitars. Thanx for the vid ! Great stuff !
Thanks alot for this setup guide....after years of struggling i managed to setup my epiphone sg prophecy properly and get the intonation right! Greetings from Germany \,,,/
Thank you! The height of the strings on my SG were much too low measuring from the 12th fret so I was getting some fret buzz. But as far as the pickup to string height, I like the strings quite a bit closer since I switched them out with Semour Duncan Phat Cats which are p-90 style pickups that fit into humbucker slots. Between the SG, Phat Cats, Vox Night Train 50 watt amp head running into an old fender 4 by 12 speaker cab with 2 Alnico Blue and 2 Creamback speakers, the sound is everything I've always wanted!!!
That Guitar has been used for Metal Playing, but Rosetta Tharpe actually played this thing too. It has a really bluesy sound on the Clean setting due to the humbuckers.
This is an excellent video.. Very concise.. If you do part two of this vid, could you please discuss variables regarding 24 fret SGs (adjusted measurements for extra frets).. Issues that can occur when using heavy gauge strings (10 - 52) tension, etc.. ...And, it'd be great if you had metric measurements as well.. Thanks..
Those measurements are incredible. I thought I had my instrument set up perfectly! I decided to re-do it properly. I bought a small string action ruler and a feeler guafe and set it up to your spec. WOW. The only variation I made was going for. 013 neck relief on mine. Where did you get these measurements from? My guitar feels smoother than my wifes inner thighs
The 'SG's are famous for the strings hitting the bridge plate(creating strange harmonics, string breakage as well as tuning problems)coming up from the stop-tail, raising the stop-tail is one remedy. But the most effective, IMO and many others opinion, is the string through a ball end of a string then into the stop-tail from the bridge pick-up side wrapped up and over the top of the stop-tail then on over the bridge.

Screw the tail piece all the way down to the body and then put your strings in from the neck side of the tail piece and wrap them over. Increases sustain and keeps your break angle over the saddles manageable
Rubbish. when tuned whatever happens south of the bridge or north of the nut won't affect how the guitar feels or plays. It's simple physics but you won't accept it and I don't know why.

Perfect, a great review and you finally answered a question that I have had for some time now (and couldn't find the answer to)....how high should the tailpiece be?? Thank you!!
What’s the measurement on how high the tailpiece should be? I have mine screwed all the way down because I thought that helps with sustain but it made it a little bit stiffer to play. I just need the tailpiece measurement height?

Hi, very nice vid. I set everything but I'm having too much tension on the 1st string. I raised the tail piece, but I got more tension. Any advice you could give me? Thank you.
Great video. I just bought a new 2016 SG and Gibson's website says when checking the neck relief to hold down the string at the 15th fret instead of the 22nd. I have been holding down the 22nd fret for many years, just like you did. Any thoughts on that?
Afaik they switched cause your trussrod only works until you meet the body. So it does more sense than to check a fret that sits in the body and isn't really affected by the neck relief. So whatever scalelength you have, fret where the neck meets the body.

The specs are very similar if not the same. Sometimes the action needs to be a hair higher on Epiphones because their frets are not as accurately leveled.
where did you put the video about the bridge saddles? I really want to know how to get those strings at the spot and I have no idea of why 3 of em face one way and the other three face the other way!! I've got the bargain basement epiphone sg special with bolt on neckl can ya send me a link so I can watch it?
The saddle on my g-string is as far back as it can go, and it's still too sharp. What can I do to intonate it since the saddle won't go any further back?
I had the same issue on my Epiphone les paul. I tried flipping the saddle, but it wasn't enough. I ended up buying a gotoh bridge. Much better and it has more adjustment room.
Yes, flip it.The saddles are sesigned with one side higher than the other for this reason. probably one or more came from the factory like this already. Make sure the stoptail is not bottomed out.
My SG Pickups are tilted horizontally (not bass and treble side), especially the bridge, so one half is pretty close to the strings the other isn't. Is that a big issue regarding tone? Probably the neck angle... is there a way to fix that? Like this I really can't set a height for the pickups...
My Sg does that as well. It seems to be an issue with the batwing style pickguards. I wish I had bought an SG with the small pickguard instead as the pickups sit level. Mine came that way from the factory and the problem was still there when I changed the pickups and used different screws, so it's not a spring or screw problem. I have read on a forum of people using foam under the pickup. I couldn't get get this method to work.
use some foam rubber (like the packing in SD pickups, under the pickups...(slash does it, that's where I got the idea)...keeps them level and they won't move or change position
When there's only one screw for adjustment, that will happen. The issue is the SG's neck angle is too sharp from the body, and the pickup at the bridge is all the way up, while the neck is all the way down. Poor design. The 61 Reissues have less neck angle and their pickup's volume balances better.
All information is good but set up is a personal preference there is no set way. The string height action I like to set as low as possible to begin. You can always go up. The action of each string is the same height following the radius of the neck, so when you play a bar chord as an example it feels even pressing down. Also solos are easier when all the strings have the same action. Pick up height depends on the output level of each pick up, trying to keep them the same volume level. I do this to all my guitars and make sure your strings at the nut the height are parallel along the fret board to the bridge. That way you can sort out problem frets and plays better again, strings being level along the neck. Plays like a pro even cheaper guitars.
+jperryfan If I am reading you correctly, you tried adjusting the treble side of one of the pickups closer to the string and it did not move. Several things could be the cause. If you are actually turning the screw right beside the pickup and the pickup isn't moving, the screw may have fallen out of the threads on the pickup, or the threads may be stripped on the pickup leg. If you are trying to turn the screw and it won't move, something may be caught under the pickup. The lead wire could be jammed between the leg and the pick guard or the spring might be too long and you could be at the extent of its adjustment range. A shorter spring would fix that.
Try Amazon or StewMacs. Got one at Amazon for like $8 bucks. Not as accurate as a StewMacks professional model, but way less expensive and close enough. Great vid btw.
hi I've done everything by the book but the notes on the A and the E string after the 12th fret are dead I can only get them to sound clear with a high setting about 7mm probably more I've had the guitar from new what else can I try

I tried to raise the treble pickup over the high E and turning the screw did nothing to move the pickup up or down. Am I doing something wrong?
+jperryfan If I am reading you correctly, you tried adjusting the treble side of one of the pickups closer to the string and it did not move. Several things could be the cause. If you are actually turning the screw right beside the pickup and the pickup isn't moving, the screw may have fallen out of the threads on the pickup, or the threads may be stripped on the pickup leg. If you are trying to turn the screw and it won't move, something may be caught under the pickup. The lead wire could be jammed between the leg and the pick guard or the spring might be too long and you could be at the extent of its adjustment range. A shorter spring would fix that.
extremely helpful thanks!!
A HUGE thank you!
Man, that’s some high action
Is this applicable for any SG ?? sorry... newbie guitarist here.
Easy pezzy. Guide the best ever. Thanks. 👍🏻😎
would this set up apply to a Vintage VS6?
Very helpful. Thanks.
Excellent. Thanks a lot.
Where do I find said fancy ruler!?!
Try Amazon or StewMacs. Got one at Amazon for like $8 bucks. Not as accurate as a StewMacks professional model, but way less expensive and close enough. Great vid btw.
Stupid question. But this set up would work the same on and Epiphone SG as well. Correct.
Very high settings ?
hi I've done everything by the book but the notes on the A and the E string after the 12th fret are dead I can only get them to sound clear with a high setting about 7mm probably more I've had the guitar from new what else can I try
See if the neck Is warped. 7 mm is crazy high!
@@12south31 thanks for replying the neck is straight I've put a steel rule on it and no gaps between frets and rule it's an epiphone sg I've had it from new
@@russell90ful The only other thing I can think I of would be if the nut is too high, but since you had it awhile and it wasnt like that before that's probably not it. Obvious question but did you lower the tune o matic bridge all the way down and it's still that high?
@@12south31 hi have lowered the bridge but from the 12th fret on the a and e string the notes are dead the notes on the other strings are fine
@@russell90ful Last thought would be a high fret on those two you are having trouble with. Sorry I cant be more help. Strange problem. Good luck!
In centimers?
video resolution could be much better. Also some of my saddles are fully forward, others fully back but still can't reach proper intonation
