    Bird’s influences like any musician can be heard at points in his playing but what he did with those influences was very rare indeed. He had a very skilled ear and could play quotes from Stravinsky or corny tv commercials in the middle of long fluid lines. He would sound appropriate in modern era because he had the ability to absorb anything he heard around him into his lines.

    Bird was a true virtuoso. He introduced revolutionary rhythmic and harmonic ideas into jazz, including rapid passing chords, new variants of altered chords, and chord substitutions. His tone ranged from clean and penetrating to sweet and somber. He was also an icon for the hipster subculture and later the Beat Generation, personifying the jazz musician as an uncompromising artist and intellectual rather than just a mere entertainer.
    Rest in Peace Bird 🙏🏾🎷

    Love Bird. If he’s first then Lee Konitz is second. Konitz had to develop a sound (which he later filled out possibly due to a stint with Kenton) and rhythmic approach that differed almost fundamentally from Bird. If you listen to what Konitz was doing around 1949 - beautiful serpentine, densely chromatic runs with unusual rhythmic accenting - and to what he was doing with Kenny Wheeler and Dan Tepfer towards the end of his life… LK is a behemoth of the alto sax.

    The fact that he thinks his playing would still sound contemporary is a testament to how museumafied jazz has become. White stakeholders in the music have done a great job of fossilizing the art form. To say no one has matched Parker is really just reinforcing my original point.

    • @Niamhmusicmusic
      @Niamhmusicmusic 9 місяців тому +1

      @Sonnyrollinsfani’d argue it’s both points simultaneously. I hear a lot of amazing jazz innovation, and a lot of fossilization! I feel like the internet has basically turned jazz into something where no one can really be the best anymore because everyone can do it. There are hardly any restrictions to playing jazz now, so ppl can just be the best if they want to.
      I also feel like there’s not enough credit given on the subject of jazz’s diversification. There are hundreds (probably thousands tbh) of musicians that simply can’t be appreciated because of saturation. It was easy to appreciate bird because his level of innovation was so stupendous and the people at that level were few and far between, unlike now.

    • @adogtm8532
      @adogtm8532 8 місяців тому

      I think your first point is valid and exemplified in a lot of stuff like academia placing a lot of emphasis on learning bop and only bop, but it’s also important to contextualize Parker’s playing and writing and how different it was compared to everyone else. A lot of people may have gotten to the same technical levels but Parker was the first one to raise the bar there and it was a significant jump. Jazz died decades ago.

    Mmm.. not agree!
    Be a father of a style of phrasing, like bebop, It doesn't make you the best saxophonist, neither does playing faster. Much more important is the quality than the mode or the speed. In addition, Parker consumed many drugs and played under the influence of it, which gave him advantageous results at the time, but later he paid the consequences. None of that seems great to me, the only thing that I find admirable about him was his enormous ability to practice for so many hours.

      "Quality" is subjective, and his quality of phrasing, melody, style, articulation, etc. was also unparalleled with his finger technique. When you are considered the father of the genre, you can play the shit out of your instrument, played and recorded with the biggest jazz legends of the time, there's almost no world where you aren't considered one of the greatest at the instrument. Doing drugs has nothing to do with that. You can do all drugs or no drugs and still shred. Now if it makes you a role model that's another question.

      Hmmm…Bird has held a lot if not the most influence on Jazz and it’s not really subjective either. His technique and playing regardless of what style he was playing in is still a tremendous feat that contributes to his greatness. That on top of his connections with some of the greatest musicians in that time alongside his constant innovation of the genre is very substantial as well. Quality is important I agree and while Bird may not have had the best quality in sound from a subjective point of view, it’s a completely unique and different sound entirely encompassing an entire era of that time (also drugs do not boost your performance).
