As a stats instructor and crocheter, I can't even tell you how much I appreciate ALL the detail in your videos. This one also highlights the difficulty in measuring and categorizing yarn because of the number of variables involved. Keep them coming! Thanks!
Elise, those are some amazing findings! Who would have thought there would be that big of a difference. I love your 3 pigs. They turned out amazing.TFS!!!
This is so interesting! The only way I realized that my exact same amigurumi pattern was going to be larger was when I switched from a worsted to a bulky. I knew it would be bigger but is was like three times larger than the original. Also, with all the worsted weight yarn, I use a 2.5 mm hook on any and all the amigurumi. I only started two years ago when I bought a giraffe pattern (my very first) off etsy. It was a very difficult pattern and very very tedious, definitely for a seasoned crocheter which i was not I hardly knew any terminology so I looked up like 20 youtube videos for help and yours was one of them. It ultimately, 48 hours of work later, came out beautifully. Thanks for being so helpful and keeping it short and sweet.
What an amazing package! An absolute bargain. I snapped it up because in addition to your adorable piggies there are so many other irresistible patterns. I don't often purchase bundles but this one is very special.
Thank you so much Elise for all of this information. Now I feel like I know how to confidently compare my yarns. And using a smaller hook size to tighten the tension is amazing! I have officially finished binge watching all of your videos from the last four years and now I feel like you are a close friend. I love everything you do!
WOW! Elise, what an amazing video! You always are so inspiring; however, this video really was captivating! Thank you for featuring Premier Cotton Sprout and Premier Basix Yarn. We always appreciate support from a dedicated expert like you who is always so passionate about yarn! Your Three Little Pigs are awesome! The crochet/knitting community is fortunate to have someone like you who is such a talented educator when it comes to yarn! THANK YOU so much!
When I first started, I was using a 3.75 mm hook because that's what came in the kit I bought. Now I exclusively use a 5 mm when doing dolls, and a 6 mm when doing hats or blankets. But I never really noticed the difference in sizes until I pulled out a doll whose body I had finished, but never completed her clothes. She was made with the 3.75 hook and I'd put a 5 hook doll next to her and was like, "Whoa, hang on . . ." Despite the difference in sizes, though, I love how your three pigs still look like they're part of the same set. Like, before you started describing the whole thing, I thought the size difference was intentional and I loved that detail. I still do, :)
I experienced something similar recently making a hexagon bag (the Tobago bag by Toni Lipsey, TLYC). I used the same hook size but different yarns to make 2 bags- & the size difference was amazing! 24/7 cotton yarn made a smaller bag, peaches & crème made a bag several inches larger. Both are 4 weight yarns. I always think about hook size changing gauge, but that experience & this video really underscore the difference yarn choice makes!! Thank you!
Thank you for a very insightful video. Over the past few years, your thoughtful sharing of your amigurumi experiences have been so appreciated. And, "The Three Not So Little Pigs", are absolutely adorable!

Hi Elise, I sure enjoyed your video today! I hope you had a wonderful time at the wedding this weekend. You both looked beautiful in the picture. You must be exhausted. I know I was after my niece got married a few years ago. We have been parental figures in her life and it was like getting to be mother of the bride. The experience was such a gift to me as I have no children of my own, and my husband was over the moon because he got to walk her down the aisle. You have really inspired me to get back into amigurumi. I have made a couple of toys for my grand niece but nothing too exciting. I ordered your Kitten with Mittens pattern and started it yesterday. It is worth every penny, between the great directions and the videos it is really fun. I have both feet done and am starting on the leg. I decided to do something a little different, on the body pieces I have added a strand of some fuzzy mohair yarn I had in my stash, in with the worsted weight. It has given it a nice light soft furry/halo effect. I hope you have more patterns coming out some day. You have a real knack for organizing all the steps and making it fun. Have a wonderful day ahead, I will send you a pic when I get it done. :)
Wow, really good information in all of this video. I have no idea how I missed the test ball video. That is my next video to watch. This is really a big size difference and shows that wpi is really important to pay attention to.

@@EliseRoseCrochet little finger is getting better. I need to take more breaks like you said in one of your videos. You and your daughter looked so beautiful in your dresses for the wedding. A memory you'll never forget.
Test balls! What a lovely idea! The yarn is rather limited where i'm from, but i'd like to make some to compare hook sizes. Thanks for this wonderdul idea! I will share one hack that i always use as one who also likes to make ami patterns. It's using a piece of yarn to mark rows as i go along, so that when i need to frog rows i know exactly which row i'm at, or which row i need to frog to. It's been a life saver for me.
I love making amigurumi, and I purchased the Mia doll and made it with 100% cotton...my first time using cotton. My fingers are still sore! I am in my 60's now and cannot see so well...I battle to see a 3mm hook! 😊 I use DK yarn and a 3.5mm hook and hate to get holes, so I really pull it too tight. Today I am going to start another Mia and try to use a 3mm hook...I use 100% acrylic yarn (a course, cheap yarn) but today I am going to use 100% soft acrylic. You have way more yarn to choose from than we do. I love watching you because I learn so much from you! Crochet is what I do every day, practically the whole day.
Thank you! I've found that my tension can be much looser (and less pain) when going down in hook size to get the look I want with no holes! Glad you enjoy the channel! 🧶🧶🧶
I’m impressed by this video. I would never have imagined there would be such a difference in the size of these 3 little piggies. It’s very interesting. Thanks Elise for sharing. ❤gayle
This was really helpful. I’m super new to making toys (one in!), and I used a big crochet hook and am suffering terribly with elbow tendonitis now. No bueno. Thanks for these tips!
Can you please make a video on how to design your own ideas and how to write a good crochet pattern. The reviews for your patterns are amazing, it seems like you really know how to write a good pattern that’s easy to follow and although I don’t design anything, I’d love to learn how to come up with your own ideas and how to write them down so they’re actually easy to follow. Please❤️
I’ve noticed the difference also in size and stitch structure with different size yarns in different companies as well as the colour. 4weight red for instance is different in different companies. Dk wt also varies significantly with colours in the same brand, just make a blanket of 15 colours and you definitely see the weight difference. Just another observation to your understanding Elise. Have a happy day crocheting ❤
You put it into words! I thought I was going insane! All of my projects were coming out all sorts of sizes 😂 definitely going to use the test ball pattern from now on! Thank you so much for sharing!
Ok first, your hands look gorgeous!! 😍😍 Second, this video was so fun because it was like watching the pattern come to life!! I love watching all the different and exciting things you are a part of 😊 Hope the wedding is magical ❤🧶
Those not so little pigs are adorable! 😍 Q: What do you think of yarning under rather than yarning over for amigurumi toys? I personally do the former for toys because I like how they look not-so... dimply? Is that even a word? 😅😅😅 anyway... the only thing is it's much tighter and the toys turns up smaller.
I love berriocco vintage. I have some of it in my stash. But I have wanted to buy a bunch of colors. I'm trying to use my stash right now without buying much. But that's hard when you buy a pattern to make and would like specific yarn.
Those pigs are just too adorable ☺️I’m looking forward to when you can release the stand alone pattern, not that the others aren’t cute, but I only have so much arm power any more 😂. The last year I’ve taken to using the Toft 3mm hook for almost all of the toys and that is good for me☺️. Have a great week and keep cool 😎…. Karen from Greenleaf Idaho
Hello Elise, I am new to crochet and love your videos! You have given me so much information and are a blessing to many! I don’t want the whole package but only want your three piggies. Can I buy just those from you? They are different from the ones on your Etsy shop.
Thank you! The pattern will be available as a stand alone pattern in my Etsy shop in a few months! And yes, it's different from my other pig pattern! 🐷🐷🐷
I learned the most AMAZING amigurumi hack just recently and if you haven't tried this yet, I swear you'll never go back. Instead of using a standard single crochet, use the single crochet CROSS STITCH. You're work will be tighter, you won't have those little holes in your dolls, AND it uses less yarn!
Got the package, Elise. Allowed myself to be confused in the purchase phase, and figured it out. Looking forward to making several. Your yarn ball test for sizing makes total sense! I wanted to make an amigurumi “monster”. The original pattern called for very fine crochet thread, which would have made it too small for my liking. The crochet ball would have given me a more accurate estimate of size. As it is turning out, I’m pleased with the increased size, using DK yarn. Great hacks! Thanks, Elise!🥰
I've crocheted a LOT of amigurumi toys, and when I'm pulling the yarn back thru to make the stitch, it tightens up my right collarbone muscle and then it gradually begins to create a good bit of pain. I usually go down 2 sizes in the crochet hook from what the ball band says. I have to be careful and take breaks. 😔
It's interesting that there are more "official" tests. I use a lot of 2nd hand yarns so often times there is no labels. I am also a little weird and always went with the best color for a project not the same brand. That's why I'm very picky about buying single patterns instead of whole books/lots.
Thank you so much for your new-found information. I love your little pigs! Can you tell me how I can find the Festival? Is it an online thing or is it somewhere to be? I’m from Canada fyi. Thank you ❤❤❤
Absolutely love your videos. They're so helpful and informative. I'm a newbie, and have started with mostly amigurumi projects. And I think I have found a lifelong hobby. I'm loving it. I was wondering if you could help with a question... I want to make a pillow size version of one of my amigurumi projects. I will definitely be using a thicker yarn, but could I use the exact same pattern? Or would the pattern need to be adjusted in proportion to the size of the final product?
I think it depends. I've wanted to test this out for myself and probably will in the new year. If the pattern is very detailed, you might need to adjust it, but otherwise I think it should work out. It would be a fun experiment! ❤️✨🧶
@ Thank you for your response. It’s a pretty simple pattern (it’s a boba drink), so not too detailed. I will definitely give it a try. Thank you. Have a great day!
Hi Elise, Thank you so very much for this absolutely necessary video. What I learnt from your videos- No yarn and hook combination is ever going to produce the same size Amigurumi and we all have different tension as well. And you are a fantastic teacher thank you 🙏🏽 I will definitely try the ball test I was confused at the beginning but when you had all three together it was like 😮😂 I love those piggies 🐷 I’d love to know if you would ever make your 3 piggies knitted and create a pattern for it? I would definitely love to learn how to make knitted Amigurumi and those piggies would look adorable!🐷 The festival Amigurumi toys are so adorable. I’ve read lots of peoples comments about the buying process is in Spanish and not English and the struggle. If only the site had the option to change the language for the not so fluent Spanish speakers 😊 Love your work and Congratulations on your daughters and new son-in-law’s marriage 👰🏼♀️🤵🏼♂️I can’t wait to see your Amigurumi dolls. God bless you all always 🙏🏽💗🧶 take care.
I probably will never create them as a knitted pattern since I don't have enough experience with knitting to do that But the pattern website has English as well as Spanish! Hope that helps! 🐷🐷🐷
How odd, i have been using the 3mm hook all the time (my abs fav) and i work almost ONLY with 100 percent cotton for i hate how most wools (i call it wool if it has this wooly texture, werher it is sheep or acrylic, these little hairs going everywhere) for feeling gross to me. I did work with other yarns before, very different ones, and i ALWAYS use hook sizes much smaller than given. It was like an instinct when i learned crocheting: my mom had a bunch of hooks and suggested starting with the big 5mm and 6mm hooks for being beginner friendly but i just did not feel them in my hands. Then, as i got my very first crocheting kit for christmas i found my true love: ricorumi yarn. DK, 100 percent cotton, affordable, TONS of colors and styles, totally un-hairy, creating crispy-clear stitches. And the sets crochet hook, 3mm, is til now the best to hold in my hands. I love the entire brand, its quite common here in germany & if you have any chance of trying some i dearly recommend it! Bottom line: totally unstretchy but i never had issues with my joints whatsoever (and i work with thatmuch tension the yarn tends to screetch at times and small projects dont really need stuffing to stand on their own xD)
Hi Elise! What type paints and brushes or sponge do you use on your Amigurumi? I crocheted a fawn and want to use paint instead of yarn to create the markings on it's back. Thank you!
I just started making Amigurumi & I'm doing really good. One thing new I learned was the "Invisible Join Stitch". Those animals are adorable piggies! 💕 CHECK OUT "Crochet Ragdolls by Sascha Blase - Van Wagtendonk" I am new at reading patterns yet I had no problem. ** In the beginning of the book it shows you pictures of the same toy using various yarns & how it effects the size. I used Peaches & Cream Cotton with a 3mm hook.

The last year I’ve taken to using the Toft 3mm hook for almost all of the toys and that is good for me☺️. Have a great week and keep cool 😎…. Karen from Greenleaf Idaho
Thank you so much, Karen!! I totally get it! The individual pattern will be released in a few months! 🐷🐷🐷
@@EliseRoseCrochet yay!!☺️👍🏼
Thanks for sharing! I have tried it before before but it causes pain in my wrist! ❤️
Wonderful! Thanks for sharing!! 🐷🐷🐷
Thanks for sharing! I also have to take a lot of breaks! 🧶🧶🧶
Elise, Have you ever tried the Boye ergonomic hook handle? I find it helps with hand/fingers & wrist pain.
I have not! Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
Good video I like yarn!!!!!
Thanks so much! 🧶🧶🧶
Thank you 😊😊😊
You're welcome!! 🐷🐷🐷
It's interesting that there are more "official" tests. I use a lot of 2nd hand yarns so often times there is no labels. I am also a little weird and always went with the best color for a project not the same brand. That's why I'm very picky about buying single patterns instead of whole books/lots.
Thanks for sharing!! 🐷🐷🐷
Thank you so much for your new-found information. I love your little pigs! Can you tell me how I can find the Festival? Is it an online thing or is it somewhere to be? I’m from Canada fyi. Thank you ❤❤❤
There's a link to the bundle in the description box!! 🧶🐷🧶🐷
Wie süss sind die Schweinchen..oh die gefallen mir alle... L.G.Karin
Thank you!! 🐷🐷🐷
The difference in the height of those piggies 😱 Great tips 😘
Right??? All worsted weight yarns and same exact hook! 🧶🧶🧶
Hi Elise,
Thank you so very much for this absolutely necessary video.
What I learnt from your videos- No yarn and hook combination is ever going to produce the same size Amigurumi and we all have different tension as well. And you are a fantastic teacher thank you 🙏🏽
I will definitely try the ball test I was confused at the beginning but when you had all three together it was like 😮😂
I love those piggies 🐷
I’d love to know if you would ever make your 3 piggies knitted and create a pattern for it? I would definitely love to learn how to make knitted Amigurumi and those piggies would look adorable!🐷
The festival Amigurumi toys are so adorable. I’ve read lots of peoples comments about the buying process is in Spanish and not English and the struggle. If only the site had the option to change the language for the not so fluent Spanish speakers 😊
Love your work and Congratulations on your daughters and new son-in-law’s marriage 👰🏼♀️🤵🏼♂️I can’t wait to see your Amigurumi dolls.
God bless you all always 🙏🏽💗🧶 take care.
I probably will never create them as a knitted pattern since I don't have enough experience with knitting to do that But the pattern website has English as well as Spanish! Hope that helps! 🐷🐷🐷
@@EliseRoseCrochet Thank you 😊 I totally missed the deadline but I’ll just wait for you to sell those piggies 🐷 patterns🙏🏽💗🧶
Love love all your videos. I was wondering if we can buy your not so little pigs only.
They will be available as a single pattern in a few months! 🐷🐷🐷
Another great video! ❤
Thank you! 🐷🐷🐷
Have you ever used premier Minikins? What do you think of them?
I have!! I do like it! It's a tad bit splitty, but if you don't mind that then it's a great yarn for amigurumi! 🧶🧶🧶
Love these tips!!!
Glad you like them! 🧶🧶🧶
Thanks for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
Hi Elise! What type paints and brushes or sponge do you use on your Amigurumi? I crocheted a fawn and want to use paint instead of yarn to create the markings on it's back.
Thank you!
Hmmm, I really haven't tried painting my amigurumi. I have used a little watercolor for cheeks before but that's it. 🎨🖌️🧶
@@EliseRoseCrochet that's it, watercolors! Again, thank you! ❤️
Elise, I went to the site to purchase the 30 Amigurumi Festival patterns but can't figure out how to buy them in English. Help!
I'm so sorry! When I check the link I see both English and Spanish! 🐷🐷🐷
What kind of yarn do you use for stuffys ..thats more adorable...i shop primer, Michaels and Amazon there are no stores near me but an empty Walmart 😢
Right now I'm really loving YarnArt Jeans which you can purchase on Amazon! I use a 2.5 mm crochet hook with it! 🧶🧶🧶
@@EliseRoseCrochet thank you!
Thanks for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
I got a little lost. What size hook did you end up using with the cotton yarn?
I used a 3 mm for all of them! 🐷🐷🐷
I have never done amagarumi. I crochet but di t know if i could crochet small things. Any arvice fir a beginner at amagarumi?
Start watching beginner tutorials!! Just give it a try! It's not as hard as it looks once you get the hang of the magic ring! 🧶🧶🧶
@@EliseRoseCrochet do you have beginner videos?
I don’t understand how to get festival package in English and American dollars, not sure how much c29 is
It’s roughly $32 USD
You can find the link in the description box! 🐷🐷🐷
Where do you purchase the festival patterns? Please help!
You'll find the link to it in the description box! 🐷🐷🐷
Am I missing something with the festival package? I cannot see a link to purchase in USA currency.
I think they have it listed in euros but it does charge you in US dollars. I believe it's around $32. Hope that helps! 🧶🧶🧶
So finally which size hook did you uses?
3 mm! 🧶🧶🧶
As someone who just starting their channel on educational baking videos I use your videos for inspiration and listened to your podcast on youtube creators hub. I was curious if you share what software you use for video editing?
I'm so glad you enjoyed the interview! I just use iMovie! 🧶🧶🧶
@LePetitSaintCrochet thank you so much. I'll have to check that out I've tried a few softwares and they can be confusing
Are the patterns in us english or uk english?? Couldn’t find the info on the website and I find uk terminology confusing…
It's US terminology! 🐷🧶🐷🧶
Great! Thank you, now excuse me I have a bundle to purchase ☺️
