    My first concert was Counterparts in Atlanta. The first song was Dreamline and Geddy flubbed the second verse. I greatly appreciated that flub because they were authentic. This was of course in the aftermath of Millie Vanillie.

    On a side note, has anyone ever seen Geddy Lee sweat? Either on stage or throwing out the starting pitch for a Blue Jays game. Cool as a cucumber.

      There's a recording of them on the Grace Under Pressure tour, can't remember what specific date, I think it was in Largo, but he flubs and swears during "Red Barchetta" (I think it was that song). And then there's the time he had to yell at a crowd, but I don't know what tour that was, I found it back in the early days of file sharing.
      But those are the only two instances I can think of.

    It's a time where owning a physical copy ie: Vinyl, Cassette or CD Could be the only original "Version" Of the Music.. Before it was auto tuned for reissue on streaming.🤔😮

    I have to assume that Don Henley, etc. would of had to “allow” the studio to do that. Or at least somehow give his blessing….. I would like to think that Ged and Al would also have this kind of control and be able to tell them NO!! (Hopefully I’m right. Fingers crossed.) One of the things I’ve always loved about Rush is while they are so perfect, it’s amazing when they are less than perfect! And we get to smile and laugh right along with them! That’s true musicianship! (I miss Rush so bad that it hurts!!!)

      .....in the case of the Eagles, Don Henley would not necessarily have to approve of what happened to the vocals on the song that was auto-tuned. Henley may not actually own the song. He may be a co-writer but it is the 'music publisher' who actually owns the songs. Often songwriters give up some percentage of their publishing rights to the record labels in order to get a recording deal. Henley may have negotiated his publishing rights away in this manner.... 🤠

    Here’s the thing, if there’s a dollar to be made, by the powers that be, they’ll probably try and suck it out of the sucker public that’s willing to pay for it. Geddy as a singer was probably not pitch perfect but his vocal skills, the range, his delivery, timing and consistency throughout his entire career are unparalleled. DON’T FUCK WITH IMPERFECT PERFECTION!🎤🎤🎤🤘🖖✌️

      I can hear it on the recording.... The artifact becomes all too recognizable..... The scary part is that there are a lot of classic albums in which later releases have Auto-Tune applied without warning..... Most notably a vinyl copy of Black Sabbath "Paranoid" that I once purchased..... Not to mention a lot of Beatles re-releases. @@AllAboutRush

    As much as I agree with you on this sentiment, as someone who has seen them 9 times and only missed 1 tour since 1990. Only because they didn't come to my town on Counterparts, and I couldn't afford the second night of the Time Machine Tour; otherwise it would've been 11 times. I agree that the performance is what it was and should be preserved as is warts and all. The imperfections are what made those moments so magical.
    With that said, pitch correction can be done in a way that will not be noticeable. Not that I'm saying that it should be done, as ultimately it would make things more sterile and less "in the moment".
    Another thing, is that "pitch correction" has been around for ages. Even Freddie Mercury had problems hitting some of the notes, so they would slow the tape down so he could hit them and then replayed it at normal speed so that they would sound perfect.

    • @AllAboutRush
      @AllAboutRush  Рік тому +1

      Yeah I mentioned in the video that I don’t have too much of a problem with pitch correction, but it should be reserved to the studio. Live is VERY debatable. 🙂

    It's kinda sad that autotune vocals are the standard in music now. I really don't like the sound of it. You can absolutely tell it's applied liberally to vocals that probably don't need it at all and it's kind of sterile.
    As for "warped" application of Autotune on hip hop tracks and the like I think it's clear that it's being applied as an effect and not to "correct" per sey. And in that sense I may not like it but I don't have a problem with it.
    I saw a channel that tried to run Robert Plant through autotune. It basically ruined it. Completely took all the "blue" notes out and made it sound flat and uninteresting.
    Thankfully that's what the intention was. Some things should just be left the hell alone.
    So yea, I agree 100% with what you are saying.
    I worked with a female vocalist who had the most incredible vibrato. Very fast and quite a depth. Very much like Aretha. Amazing voice.
    We were recording demos for our songwriting and she asked of I could "fix" one note.
    Sure. I went in and fixed the note. Done. Saved doing drop in or retake. Practical and easy fix. I don't have a problem with that.
    Interestingly enough I decided to see what it would do when applied to her whole vocal track.
    It didn't know what to do.....
    Her vibrato and pitch waver completely did autotune's head in and the result had us in stitches. It was Melodyne actually. I hadn't used it much before and the excercise was fun.
    I used Melodyne on an unfinished song on a recording from a band I used to play in.
    We simply ran out of time in the studio and a number of tracks were unmixed and a couple had parts missing that couldn't easily be reproduced.
    I had a single guitar line that was supposed to have a harmony over it.
    I couldn't get a sound that sat with the original and every attempt to dub one in sounded "added".
    So... I opened the guitar track in Melodyne and painstakingly "created" the harmony line by moving all the notes.
    It sounded absolutely amazing. Like it was recorded the way we intended.
    Isolated you could hear some very slight "artifacts" and a wee bit of "dither" but treated with the same plug ins as the single line and mixed in with rhythm guitar, bass, drums and vocal you simply could not tell it wasn't recorded like that.
    It would have been impossible to do without it actually because I could not reproduce the sound I had in that studio in a convincing way with the resources I had.

      Excellent points by you @theyapsta. Pitch correction certainly has its place, and auto-tune can be used artistically, even comically. I just have a problem with live singing already recorded and having it bludgeoned. 😁

    I hate to break this to you, but this has already happened. Look up the cellphone recordings of Time Machine's cleveland show, then compare to the official release. A number of songs were pitch corrected (some fairly heavily) in the studio afterwards. This isn't the only example from recent times.
    They also did this on Replay X3 (Grace Under Pressure Live was on this). This one was pointless IMO, as Geddy sang quite fine on the original laserdisc/VHS releases which weren't autotuned.

    • @AllAboutRush
      @AllAboutRush  Рік тому +1

      I actually don’t mind pitch correction too much, as long as it’s somewhat sparse. I mean auto-tuning whole verses, and even whole songs! I mean, that would be a tough pill to swallow.

    • @photoniccannon2117
      @photoniccannon2117 Рік тому

      @@AllAboutRush Yea, Rush never really was into this. The live albums used melodyne to fix things that needed to be fixed by hand, they generally did a good job not making it obvious. I cut him some slack on Time Machine since he had strep throat on the show that they recorded.
      It’s fairly rare to find artists that never use pitch correction of any kind. Rush used it too, but not as heavily as some.

    Recordings of live performances have been pitch corrected in some form literally for decades at this point, dude (and yes, that includes Rush). Before that, artists would often overdub the live performances that they would release to touch them up. This is nothing new in the slightest. You’re acting like Rush’s music is about to be fundamentally altered to the point of being unrecognizable and that’s just ridiculous. This is making a big deal out of nothing to the point where this video is unironically teetering precariously towards the “boomer shit” category. Some of you people seriously need to stop living in the 80s

    • @AllAboutRush
      @AllAboutRush  Рік тому

      Hey @JustinHmusic, thanks for your comment!
      Like I mentioned in the video, I really don't have a problem with Pitch Correction as a tool. If you want to tweak certain notes that were sung slightly off-key, well, I really don't have a problem with that if the artist feels they actually could've done it.
      What I have a problem with, which was also well explained, is auto-tuning a whole song (particularly live performances) to the point that it is completely different from the original. I know that these tools have been around for decades, and yes, both Auto-Tune and Pitch Correction have their place. But to do what they did to Randy Meisner's LIVE PERFORMANCE to me is, well, downright insidious. Completely unnecessary. My point was that way after the fact, what's the dang point of auto-tuning a whole performance? I see no justification for that.
      I actually do think that fundamentally changing a live performance is a big deal, not just relating to Rush, but to any artist. Nope, I don't live in the '80's. And I attest that Auto-Tune is WAY overused these days, and if you need that tool for all of your singing, in the studio AND live, well, I just say that, you suck as an artist and shouldn't be charging people to hear your fake auto-tuned voice.
      Don't be a stranger! 😁
