What a fun interview!! I've always loved Allison's wild sense of humor. I have all 9 seasons of LHOTP, and watch them frequently over and over. ❤

I was born in 64. I grew up with LHOTP-they were my "family" that I saw every week. I remember hating and loving Nellie at the same time lol. I must have been one confused kid 🤣 I grew up with all of you. I was so happy when you came back for the episode later so we could see you as the "good" grown up that we had missed for awhile🎀(there wasn't a pink one lol).

I’m 49 and I remember when “Little House” and “The Waltons” were huge back in the day. Even today, they’re still popular. Melissa Gilbert said it best when she said that “Little House” is TV comfort food. It really is.

I really loved the "Return of Nellie" episode, because it really added an unexpected dimension to her character. I especially remember that scene where Nellie is talking about her past, and she tries to minimize her bad behavior, saying, "Oh, I wasn't that bad." And then you see the realization dawn on her that she *was* that bad, and that it's a complete shock to her. Great stuff -- and I don't think it would have been possible without Alison having left the show.

Agreed, but was still upset when she left the show in the first place.

@@PopCultureRetro Yes, I tried watching some reruns of post-Nellie episodes and it wasn't the same at all. And I hate NANCY! I don't hate Nancy in the way we all "hated" Nellie, no, I really despise the way the character is written. Poor Alison Balsan, she had no idea how UN popular she was going to be.

Feel for her. But, that's what happens when you try to make a copy of something instead of just creating a new character.

@@PopCultureRetro Katherine's character became more cartoonish as the series went along, but she was always fun to watch. And Richard's barbs, although few and far between, were always spot on!

I always liked her on the show. Ike, you would be able to confirm this, but I have noticed that the actors/actresses who play the most evil, horrible people onscreen are usually the exact opposite in real-life. They are usually the nicest, sweetest people offscreen even thought they can be the nastiest, meanest people onscreen. I never really cared for Nellie’s clone, Nancy. The show really took a hit after Nellie left IMHO.

    • @PopCultureRetro

I would tend to agree. Some of the nicest people play villains, because getting to play villainy is so much fun :)

I think the genius of what Michael Landon did with *Little House on the Prairie* is perhaps little appreciated. Basically, he adapted the *Little House* books into a reinvented version of one of the greatest hit tv shows of all time, *Bonanza,* so that fans of the earlier show who had watched it for all of its 14 seasons (like my grandmother) were able to watch *Little House* as a continuation of it, with patriarch Lorne Green as Ben Cartwright (with his three sons) replaced by Landon, the actor who had played Ben's youngest boy, Little Joe, now in the role of the new patriarch Charles Ingalls (with his three daughters). He then dropped the elements of the traditional western formula that had gone out of style with the consciousness-raising of the 1970's (gunplay, excessive violence, and mysogyny), and concentrated more on folksy nostalgia and human drama. With this formula, he was able to, in effect, extend the success of *Bonanza* (now retooled as *Little House)* for another nine seasons.
