Because it was either 4 to 6 team league until 1968. The higher you finish in the regular season often came with a bye in the playoffs. Most of these "original six" teams cups weren't that impressive to win. Sorry Montreal.
Carolina won the easiest 4 playoff series I've seen, them and Tampa Bay's first cup. Orchestrated by a greedy NHL wanting their sunbelt teams to win to grow fans.
