  • In this hike I take the Fire Warden’s Trail to the West Peak in the Bigelow Range, Maine. The day I headed out there was a flood watch, though nothing crazy to be worried about so I went out and had a blast! Hiking in wet conditions is a bit more of a challenge with footing and stream or river crossings and those things need to be taken with extreme caution at times. As long as you’re safe and have proper clothing, check wind and weather, and turn around if conditions take a turn for the worse, you are all set to go!
This is my favorite mountain range in Maine and it never gets old… The beautiful Birch trees, Beech trees and Maples that dominate the lower elevations are so beautiful and can’t be compared especially during the fall peak season. The higher subalpine forest filled with moss, Fir trees, Spruce, And Paper Birch trees are such an amazing sight! Alpine shrubs and ferns fill the forest floor with seasonal mushrooms and fallen pine cones… Such a beautiful place to be. Adds such awe and wonder that only our amazing God could create!
Please remember to always be prepared before heading out into the wilderness. Carry the ten essentials, proper clothing and food and water to sustain you during your adventures. Hike safe, have fun!
Thank you for watching this video - here is the link to this hike if interested! In this video I took the route counter clockwise to the West peak and back the way I came.

The river flows forever and the breeze goes on its way .

The Bigelows are great mountains - the wind really whips coming off that lake to the north. I remember that campsite at the intersection from when we did our Bigelow Traverse. Originally we were going to stay there but opted to stop earlier at Horns Pond campsite instead. A good call as the weather only continued to deteriorate on that day and as far as we could tell, there was no lean-to at that intersection campsite. The cabin was closed up on the day we passed as well.

They are my favorite so far in Maine - haven’t done anthing up north in Baxter Park yet though. I remember seeing your traverse video - what an adventure you guys had! I love that there are so many places to camp up there, the Fire Warden’s cabin looked like it had wiring or something..? But as far as I know hasn’t ever been open to the public, I wonder why..?

I really loved those raised wooden walkways (and planks in this case) that let you walk out over the water! I also like hiking through forests when it's overcast. Thanks for taking us along for the hike!

Nice! I’ve got fond memories on West Peak, but it’s been nearly 3 years since I’ve been up there. Can’t wait to get back!

Where did you reside before moving to Maine ? I love the north east . I travel to Mane at least once a quarter on business . What would you suggest as a hike near Scarborough ?

@@MrCinder13 Nice! I moved from Seattle Washington 6 years ago. I’ve never done any local hikes near Scarborough… I only spend time exploring the Western Maine mountains like the Bigelows and Grafton Notch area. I wish I could be more help 😅..

All it did for most of 2023 was rain here in Maine! Ruined much of the foliage season too as many trees dropped their leaves as over watered brown dead leaves.
