my thoughts too, exept in different words: never think "now we made it, no need to worry anymore" or: never stop searching, researching, understanding and gaining potential for control.
Probably not. It probably started out by simply incapacitating the cockroach long enough for the larvae to grow. Hanging around it stung it over and over. After a while (and beneficial mutations) the process altered, changed a bit, until it perfected itself to the point it is today. It was probably something different every step of the way. Very similar to the process of sight.
Love Carl Zimmer. Great science writer. I've been trying to get my children (and anyone with scientific curiosity) to read his great book "Parasite Rex". Many many hunting wasps do a similar thing, with hosts such as Tarantulas catepillars, beetles. Read Faber on that but Carl is way better. I hung out in Carpenteria marsh after reading it.
the eye is not that complex. it just started as photosensitive cells and the conglomerate of cells gradually developed into specialized "chamber" and transparent cells and muscle cells, it's really easy for me to imagine the whole process honestly.
this guy sounds like the rich dad poor dad guy. Cool dude I played ratrace and it made me way more confident after playing that game. I was stoked and felt as if i could conquer the world.
Think about how something like this would evovle. Maybe there were other wasps that killed the roach, then laid an egg on it, but the roach was then eaten by predators killing the wasp larvae. So then a wasp killed the roach, dragged it to a hole then laid asn egg on it. But the roach decomposed before the larvae reached maturity. So finally, a wasp evolved a method turning the wasp into a zombie which enabled the wasp larvae to reach maturity and pass on this talent to its offspring.
So this wasp evolved little by little by stinging the correct neurons each generation? I thought the eye was a complex subject for the evolution theory but it stood strong. So next up is this wasp.
Am i the only one who hopes scientists don't find all the answers to this because shortly after they do the military will take that knowledge and make a lot of people zombies?
Um, the survival of a species is entirely dependent on their ability to reproduce. That is the purpose of all life: to ensure the survival of their own race. Given that this wasp operates like a neurosurgeon, I would say it is darn amazing already!
This, my friends, is called population control, and is such at its finest! Of all the other creatures in the animal kingdom in this wasp's habitat that it could have chosen to enslave, it chose one of the most abundant of them all: the cockroach. I love nature. :)
I'm all for killing cockroaches. But I have to wonder what else the wasp does with its little life. Seems kind of pointless to go through all that just to produce another wasp that will do the same thing.
Wow, this wasp is highly specialized. I guess, it knew cockroaches are plenty and lives forever. By the way, I like seeing pretty girls in the audience. Good job TED. ;)
HOW DOES THE WASP KNOW , TO GO HUNT A ROACH . TO STING IT . AND EVERYTHING THAT FOLLOWS . THERE IS NO PARENT TO TEACH THIS BEHAVIOR. THERE ARE NO SIBLINGS . HOW DOES IT KNOW TO DO THAT , TO A COCKROACH ??????
lol the girls in front start to gross out. I think is beautiful and erotic xD About the free will, I think that's what science is going to do for us for the next few decades by finding a way to take our free will so we can live in the totally casual determined world! xD
How did I stumble upon this nightmare?
Forget creepypastas. This scared the living crap out of me. I have a phobia of both parasites AND wasps.
2:58 Me in the grey Tshirt with Luigi on it :D one of the best times I have had such bright and inspiring people
Lucky you
my thoughts too, exept in different words: never think "now we made it, no need to worry anymore"
or: never stop searching, researching, understanding and gaining potential for control.
This is what I call TEDucation!!!!
Now he convinced me that this is my favorite parasite too!
Love your books Carl. Keep up the good work.
What amazes me is that the wasp inherently knows precisely where to sting the cock roach right from birth. It's not something it has to learn.
it's a software code, encoded by nature. We have a lot to learn about DNAs.
So this is where I need to start my research to make zombie minions?
Probably not. It probably started out by simply incapacitating the cockroach long enough for the larvae to grow. Hanging around it stung it over and over. After a while (and beneficial mutations) the process altered, changed a bit, until it perfected itself to the point it is today. It was probably something different every step of the way. Great video, it is always fascinating to listen to Carl Zimmer.

Mindblowing!!! This is true TED talk .... now I want to see a documentary on it, anyone, anylink?
Damn, reminds me of an ex girlfriend I had. Really sucked the life outa me.
Incredible. Thanks so much to TEDEducation for sharing this,
Lets just hope there are no giant Jewel Wasps...
Damn nature, you scary!
Lou Saydus You said this on another video about the same topic
the eye is not that complex. it just started as photosensitive cells and the conglomerate of cells gradually developed into specialized "chamber" and transparent cells and muscle cells, it's really easy for me to imagine the whole process honestly.
like cause nature is awsome, creepy but awsome.
And the guy had good presentation skills.
Professional-level assassination by an insect.
Way ahead of you. I went to the video right after I saw your avatar. It had been a while since I'd seen the video and needed some Blur in my life.
this guy sounds like the rich dad poor dad guy. Cool dude I played ratrace and it made me way more confident after playing that game. I was stoked and felt as if i could conquer the world.
Hey, it's the milk carton from Blur's Coffee and T.V. video. I love that little guy and I love the song, band and video.
I was eating chocolate while watching it, felt like vomiting! I wish I had read this before watching the video.
If you dug this craziness Carl Zimmer has a great book based on parasites called "parasite rex".
wow,Thats a great friend that person had....
so this wasp is like unregulated tv-advertisement
Very funny and original comment. Congratulations.
I find it really convenient that these creatures remain small.
Where I live, a black wasp with blue shiny highlights is also a parasite wasp and it specializes in capturing black widows.
cool, but freaky, thats some deadly wasp
LOve Carl Zimmer
Well, if I'm infected with it or whatever, at least it hasn't paralyzed me nor bored holes in my chest and filled them with larvae.
Amazing creatures! God's great.
Note to self, don't eat dinner and watch TedEd if "Parasite" is in the title.... Quite enjoyed the video though!
This is almost like the Alien from the Alien movies
Why not?
reminds me of the movie alien a bit.
i think the movie was inspired by this (or perhaps another) parasitic wasp.
good thing insects can only grow so small.

indeed!
I wonder what the military is thinking after watching this.
sudenlyyy..... omg my body itches so baddd T.T
This is almost as scary as cordyceps fungus
So this wasp evolved little by little by stinging the correct neurons each generation? I thought the eye was a complex subject for the evolution theory but it stood strong. So next up is this wasp.
Am I EVER grateful this thing merely targets COCKROACHES. *shudder*
what I learned?
don't watch these things during lunchtime
I found that a lot when I was in Malaysia. Bloody hell they are gorgeous in color but they aren't fear of you.
Am i the only one who hopes scientists don't find all the answers to this because shortly after they do the military will take that knowledge and make a lot of people zombies?
Here's hoping that a super villain doesn't figure out what is in this wasp's venomous, and if they do find out, that it doesn't work on people.
I was thinking the same thing. lol
Wow, the professor doesn't speak Geeks. We need more scientists like him!
not gonna lie, i did have a dream after this and it involved a talking human head impaled on a giant insect stinger
"for a weak"?
Just look at how disgusted the girls are at 2:58.. It's funny, but I'm as disgusted as them..
When he smiled at 0:57 I cringed.
it's referencing a family guy sketch, which is mildly humorous.
sounds like how the modern media operates...
4:07 . . . . Uh . . .
Lol, all of the audience's faces!
Nice, I don't have to eat my breakfast anyway...
Do not eat while watching.
Um, the survival of a species is entirely dependent on their ability to reproduce. That is the purpose of all life: to ensure the survival of their own race. Given that this wasp operates like a neurosurgeon, I would say it is darn amazing already!
neither creationist or evolutionist can't explain those behavior
I already know about this wasp and I am afraid to watch the video >.<
This, my friends, is called population control, and is such at its finest! Of all the other creatures in the animal kingdom in this wasp's habitat that it could have chosen to enslave, it chose one of the most abundant of them all: the cockroach. I love nature. :)
T.T I will watch this AFTER I finish with my lunch.
I feel like Spook... "Fascinating!?"
They should really be called the Ninja wasps!
Bruh I was eating and when I saw that roach 🌚🌚🌝🌚🌝🌚🌝🌚🌝🌚🌝🌝
а как же перевод??
THE MORE YOU KNOW
Nope!
I'm all for killing cockroaches. But I have to wonder what else the wasp does with its little life. Seems kind of pointless to go through all that just to produce another wasp that will do the same thing.
Holy flying fuck.
Damn nature, you scary.
yes , this only increased my faith in god.
leave no rock unturned
Wow, this wasp is highly specialized. I guess, it knew cockroaches are plenty and lives forever. By the way, I like seeing pretty girls in the audience. Good job TED. ;)
DAMN NATURE YOU SCARY!
l like TED-ED💖💗💕💓❤
Me tokkkkkkk
Out of the first 8 comments, 5 say the exact same thing.... Tsk tsk tsp, So much for originality XP
Jesus christ it's "Alien"
Still think there's a god?
Nature you scary
HOW DOES THE WASP KNOW , TO GO HUNT A ROACH . TO STING IT . AND EVERYTHING THAT FOLLOWS .
THERE IS NO PARENT TO TEACH THIS BEHAVIOR. THERE ARE NO SIBLINGS .
HOW DOES IT KNOW TO DO THAT , TO A COCKROACH ??????
Hmm...should I dislike or like this video...?
nature, you way too scary!
Epeen show going on in comments. :\
lol the girls in front start to gross out. I think is beautiful and erotic xD
About the free will, I think that's what science is going to do for us for the next few decades by finding a way to take our free will so we can live in the totally casual determined world! xD
yeah, and I guess we will not have so many creationist comments on this video :)
The guy looks like he's got a giant zit on his face but it's just a mic.
I know my dreams were ruined by a video.. Just watch "jewel wasps" uploaded by gillypil.. HF.
analogous 2 election campaign and capitalism
masyaallah
How does a wasp with a parasitic larvae prove there is a god? And btw, your bible myths didn't serve any point at all in your argument.
