Please consider supporting these projects through my patreon: / stuffmadehere Although very fun, these videos are very time consuming and expensive.
The previous explosive bat was cool, but it wasn't setting any records. I set out to design a bat that could beat Babe Ruth's home run record of 575 feet. The engineering was intense but the results are spectacular. Aside from attempts on the record, you can also look forward to some awesome high speed footage of the bat in action and a special guest.
This video could not have been made without the help of Destin from Smarter Every Day. Not only did he provide the high speed camera, he also shared all his footage from testing the bat. He made a more in depth video on what happens when this this bat goes boom. Check it out!

Thank you for letting me visit and letting me TIG weld a bit. Some thoughts moving forward...
I think the performance of the explosive bat design might be HELPED by the mad batter, but HURT by the supersonic cannon. The Mad Batter relies on squish and rebound, so my theory is that a higher pitching velocity would help normal bats.... but I think higher pitching velocities might actually perform worse with the explosive bat design. I'm thinking this because of the way we saw the bat initially slow down at impact.
"Just starting out"
Has 1.1 million subs
not to mention the ball would most likely not survive the impact as the KE of the baseball would either just snap the bat or the ball would rip itself apart
I just come here from your video.

About turning the bat into a golf club: There is a commercially available golf club that uses the exact same principle you use here with the bat. You load in a certain number of blank shells and the ball will fly different distances depending on how many are loaded. It's primarily used by those with disabilities in moving their arms and allows them to still play golf. It's remarkably consistent in terms of accuracy and distance from what I've seen.

How to crush the record: Make two of your bats and put them on Dustin's contraption that spins around.
Haven't watched the vid about that contraption... but I question how quickly it spins up... because if the bat spinner spins up fast enough, the inertia of the piston and contact plate might be enough to fire the shells. And that piston being launched in a random direction... well... unsafe is probably the mildest term to use.
There's also an upper limit to how much abuse a baseball can take. If you splatter the ball on contact, it's not going anywhere.
People will think it's artillery fire.
Desty*
SPLOOSH!
I think that's what they are planning to do, while pitching with the cannon
Makes you realize how insane it is that a human being hit 575 with a piece of wood
Steroids
Not to be a buzzkill, but it's pretty unlikely anyone actually hit the ball 575 feet.. Now that we have actual laser measurements and camera systems designed to track the ball electronically, and aren't relying on eyeball accountsany more, no one in Major League history has hit a ball further than 504 feet. Still a mammoth shot but not quite 575.
@@michaelwarner278There are two things here. Firstly, he is hitting a steady ball, which means he is not adding any extra force, just the one generated by his arms + explosion. Secondly, when you are hitting a ball in a normal match, you need to consider the force that the pitcher is applying to the ball, which is added to the one generated by the player and the bat. Considering that they are pros and practice every single day, they apply much more force to the ball. If you do the math, you will see how that affects the final result.

The dude's stupid. He calls it a .50 cal. It's not. He's using .27 cal blank PRIMERS. He's tripping over forces that are next to nothing compared to the force you feel while holding any larger caliber fire arm. Smh... He's pretty damn dumb, with some cool tools, and a wimp. Lol maybe if he'd gone to school for his field.. He'd at least know what materials to use. Also not weld the damn aluminum. They fasten it! Bolts. Rivets. He needs to go to school for mechanical engineering.

Damn, there goes my weekend plans of making a baseball bat that can shoot a ball into orbit
If you don't tell him he wont know
Don’t give him ideas.
XD
Lol
2 major obstacles, for your weekend plan.
1. to get into orbit you need to accelerate outside of the athmosphere, to make your suborbital trajectory, that goes away and back to the earth, into an orbital trajectory, that goes around. So you would need a little bit of extra force applied to the ball once its, at its highest point. You can minimize the force required to do this, by having a very shallow asced with lots of horizontal speed. The problem with this solution thou, is that your ball will spend more time in the athmosphere, which means more drag. And that brings us right to the next problem:
2. Drag!,
its late in the night and therefor i will not theorize about the second problem to much. IF however the problem is not selfexplenatory to you & you are interested, i suggest you look into why "space-guns", big artillery pieces that shoot satelites, and a small uperstage, outside of the athmosphere, never took of the ground, since its the same problem.
On celestial bodies without athmosphere, they could work well thou.

@@sa_ad still pretty cool tho they should collab
Mark is more of a theorist and pays people to build stuff for him. But this guy thinks and builds and thats amazing.
@@amirsaeedirad mark has a more entertaining way of explaining his projects but both are awesome
Uh how about the king of dumb ideas? Michael Reeves
"Seriously Don't try this at home"
I can't even make a good sandwich
This one got me good 😆

Ohoho they're gonna have to glue you back together, IN HELL.
UA-cam always get us. Came on here to have background music playing and ended up watching this whole thing. Thanks for showing us the entire steps, this is super dope!!

I can't try this at home even if I tried...

Proceeds to make custom parts for his gun bat
"Oh so you can make it outside" 😆
I think if you have the ability to build stuff like this at home you are probably safe to try this at home ha.
The teacher : why are you finally interested in physics
Student: bat gun
um its actually a gun bat
* pushes glasses up nose *
Almost pissed myself when he said “we italicized it”.
Same, that was a great one liner
The absolute legend. After smarter every day saying “we should hang out,” they actually did it
"the old engineering trick of just making it out of thick steel"
lmaooo
Yes, I also watched the video
That usually works I'm not sure why it failed
When I was scrolling through the comment section while watching the video, I saw your comment and read it as he was saying it. Word for word reading and speaking! That is the biggest coincidence in a long time!
Normies: "You dont have to reload mele weapons"
Intellectuals: "I wouldn't say that with such confidence"
gunlance
Have you ever played Destiny? You gotta reload your swords
Killing floor 2 has a whole class that focuses on engineered melee weapons lol
"Is that a scythe!?!"
"It's also a high-impact, fully customizable sniper rifle."
"Wha..."
"It's also a gun."

lmao funniest thing ive ever heard destin say
As someone who recognizes they don't have the ability to make this myself I really do appreciate you breaking things down for the Layman. I at least can trick myself into thinking I understand what's going on because of your explanation hah
"I think the technical term for this is loft. Have you heard of that?"
"No."
"It stands for lack of freaking talent."
Why you gotta do him like that Dusty?
It was Destin-y
I finally understand some of this math. "Four is bigger than three"

Hey VSauce, Michael here
Same dude
Actually, four is less than because three has more letters
Omg you are right
I brought a baseball bat to a gun fight. I won.

Imagine being the guy 900 meters away, hearing a gunshot and dying by a baseball that turns your head to cream cheese. As the piston makes a crater by your feet. How unlucky...

can confirm happened to my buddy eric
I love the fact that he shows and explains us the whole process to get there. Analysis, struggles, equations and so on. These are the more expensive and exclusive video on YT about engineering. Big thumbs up dude.
