  • I’m trying to make a cover for my van while camping. I can’t afford an expensive awning so here is how I’m doing it for now. I have tried other ways with no success. This worked and I’m sure I’ll modify it as I go along. The most important thing is that I can get it up there by myself, with my limitations.
I’ve tried it on two campsites both were there was rain and it worked very well even in a heavy rain. I feel it also gave my van shade during the sunny times. This is very important in Texas summer. I have a new AC in the van and I’m trying my hand at camping and hotter weather. I’ll let you know how that goes.
Do you read more about this check out this blog post and below are the links to some of the things that I purchased to make this.
There are lots of pros in doing this. The cons however are that you are tethered. If you need to go to the ranger station to extend a park pass or If you need to go to the store, or go get some ice, it makes it impossible.
However, I can open my van doors and sit on my steps and many will congregate under this awning . I cooked under here with a torrential rain with no problem and even my paper towels were dry.
    Poles. Amazon www.amazon.com...
    Harbor freight c clamps www.amazon.com...
These helped me when I was trying to pull it over my van and get it lined up www.harborfrei...
These strings are supposed to be reflective however I always put pool noodles on my rope. www.amazon.com...
I purchased this for a job when we had limited width to put something up. NOTE at his is not full height and even I have to suck down to go in . But I can put it up myself. www.amazon.com...
    Additional
I just purchased these to clip the two tarps together . I think they will work but it has to be done so that water does not drip down www.amazon.com...
I also got this mosquito netting . I thought I could use magnets on my back door if I want air flow. But it will fit under the small awning and we used it over a picnic table. www.amazon.com...
I get my tarps from harbor freight. Do get the silver ones as they will keep the light out and reflect the heat.
