BTW, I met the band at an autograph signing and when I got in front of Billy, I was so starstruck, all I could say was "Mayonaise is my favorite song." -- it still is.
I want to go back to the feeling I had when I first heard this album. I still get a whirlwind of emotions to this day 30 years later but to hear it for the first time again, wow. Been a fan since day one and Mellon Collie is yet another dream but be ready to get deeper and darker and lighter. If that's possible. Anyways, glad you enjoyed it and can tell you actually felt it, instead of just hearing it. Billy and crew are very underrated and this is by far the best thing to ever come out of the 90s.
I'm gonna just go ahead and share this, since it seems appropriate. This is THE album that planted the seed for me. My family went on a road trip when I was real small, and since we had luggage, there wasn't enough room for me in my parents car. So I rode with my cousin and his parents. His dad was like the "cool rock and metal uncle" and he was blasting this album for almost 6 hours straight. I couldn't get enough of it, and years later, Smashing Pumpkins was one the first bands I got into when I was really forming my musical taste. This album is still one of top albums of all time, if only for the reason that it's the one that started it all for me.
Instead of doing Mellon Collie next you should do Pisces Iscariot. It’s a collection of b sides from Siamese Dream but I’d say it’s as good as their actual albums
One of the major life changing albums of the early 90s for me. Coming out of the 80's I was still a big hard rock and metal fan, but this album along with Jane's Addicition's Nothing's Shocking, Flaming Lips' Transmissions... among others really opened up my world. The 90s were about so much more than just that generic grunge categorization.
Aw man, Disarm really hits hard even after all this time. Thanks for the reminder to revisit this album myself haha. As an aside, not sure if you know of her, but modern electronic/hyper pop/hip-hop pioneer SOPHIE has just tragically passed... If you haven’t yet, you should really check out her work. Is it Cold in the Water? and Faceshopping are my personal faves. Edit: fun fact cuz I know you love TFOT - Thomas Erak used to cover Disarm in between songs during their shows.
seconding this SOPHIE was such an important voice in modern electronic and pop music her album oil of every persons un-insides is a modern classic and a must listen R.I.P
This is the coolest. A lot of the same emotions I had when I first experienced the whole album. They were tripping on acid and mushrooms a lot during the writing process for this album. But it also is very personal and introspective from Billy.
Love this album and loved your reaction! Don’t know if anyone’s suggested this already, but Twin Fantasy (2018) by Car Seat Headrest is one of the best rock albums ever imo. Super creative, narrative driven, and catchy! Again, loved the video!
LIFE'S A BUMMER WHEN YOU'RE A HUMMER... But seriously, it made me so happy watching someone discover and love one of my all time favorite albums. This is just wonderful uplifting content and I love it. Rock on 🤘
Ride the lightning, in rainbows, Siamese dream, the genius of Komeda, melen collie and the infinite sadness, by the way by rhcp, yeah that’s all I can think of rn
@@KINGDEAD2 we share much of the same taste in music. If you’d like to hear some current bands who are really pushing the envelope musically, I recommend checking out KEXP radio’s UA-cam channel. m.ua-cam.com/users/kexpradio I’ve been turned onto a lot of exceptional new music by that channel. Amazing reaction/review as always mate! Was looking forward to this one for a long time. The Pumpkins went on a hell of a run in the 90’s. Can’t wait to see your reaction/review to the absolutely epic Mellon Collie!!
Love your channel man. This was such a great reaction. Billy's guitar sound, as well as this band's arrangements were incredible. As great as this album is, and it is definitely a masterpiece, the band hit their peak with Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. It's known as the greatest double album of all time, as well as one of the best albums to come out of the entire decade of the 90's. In the way that Siamese Dream surpassed what Gish was able to do, Mellon Collie was able to surpass what Siamese Dream was able to do. The band members further honed their skills and Corgan's song writing hit higher levels than ever. Can't wait for you to hear its brilliance.
I can't agree with you about Mellon Collie surpassing Siamese Dream. Melon Collie is great, but there is a lack of harmony and consistency, and not a single song that equals the holy trinity of Soma, Geek USA, Mayonnaise. It's too big for its own good
Even the songs that didn't make it on the album could have been hits. The cover of never let me down is one of my favorite pumpkins song. And Apathy last kiss is a hidden gem.
Love your reaction. I’ll never forgot hearing this for the first time when I was 14. I saw them on this tour and I’ve been a diehard fan since. SD/MCIS/Adore best albums of all time.
I hope you do them all. When you do eventually get to Adore, if you like story telling and lyrics that album after the death of his mother, the sorrow, the grief and the acceptance/rebirth by the end is amazing. I know it is not one of their most popular records but its poetry to music and quite beautiful. Excited for you to do Pisces and Mellon Collie.
Love the channel Tony! Gonna keep recommending you Screamadelica by Primal Scream and Ladies and Gentleman... We Are Floating in Space by Spiritualized. I think you'll love both.
Yeah, I kept thinking of Spiritualzed everytime he mentioned floating in space. I think Tony should do a Primal Scream double bill. Screamadelica plus Xtrmntr.
am glad young people like you recognise the ordinari complex sound os one of the greatest alternative bands of the grunch 90´s and also soo in your face killer sound
For Cherub Rock they played on SNL live in ‘92 and it captured them at their best. I have it recorded on VHS. :) on UA-cam there is the recording of their pre show sound check for that live SNL. It lacks the energy of the actual live performance but its still good.
Totally nailed it. Smashing Pumpkins was one of the last bands that composed albums as opposed to a collection of songs. Pink Floyd being one of their influences. You're in for a treat with Mellon Collie. Of course Pisces is a winner too but really, it's B-sides from Mellon Collie and doesn't feel like an album like Gish, Siamese Dream or Mellon Collie. More of a collection of B-sides. During the 90s, Pumpkins B-sides were better than anyone else's A-sides.
Brilliant reaction. I still remember cruising to Tower Records on Sunset Blvd. the day it dropped. I was a HUGE Gish fan and was worried about a weak follow-up. Needless to say I wore that CD out!
This is one of My Top 5 All Time Favorite Albums. I owned this on cassette back then, then on CD, yes, I'm old. I was in high school when it came out. I Loved it from way back then and Love it Now. I play it on a regular basis. I love the Energy and Calmness of it. Not one bad song on it. My other favorite are: Daft Punk - Discovery; Metallica - Black Album; Faith No More - Epic; Dethklok - Dethalbum II. Honorable mentions, Alien Ant Farm - Anthology, Rage Against the Machine - Battle of Los Angeles, System of a Down - Mezmerize. I would say that the line "The killer in me is the killer in you" is saying 'Whatever you are...I am too.' or because of you. This album was Corgin's Emotional Release, and you can tell by the Beautifully Sung Songs on the album. I loved watching you get excited about one of my favorite albums ever. 🤘🤠
I’m not sure what the extra sounds are in the intro of “Hummer,” but the notes in harmonic minor are supposed to be a sitar effect. Corgan’s lyrics are often melancholy, but hopeful, which is 1 of the reasons I gravitated to SP after Cobain passed away. Siamese Dream is put together really well. The overlapping multi-layered lead guitar tracks in Today, Hummer and 🚀, are really cool once you notice them. Also, Chamberlin compliments the songs really well on the drums, but holds back quite a bit, except for in Silverfuck. I think that’s why he’s sort of underrated. If you listen to his snare work on Gish, his drum solo at the end of “La Dolly Vita” and what he does on the heaviest songs on Mellon Collie, he’s actually an amazing drummer.
Hipsters kind of rose along with alternative rock. It was all part of keeping sacred indie credentials, hating on anyone on a major label or big production (among many other things). Cherub Rock is a shot at that whole mentality.
Sorry to potentially ruin how you may view the band but on the first two albums Corgan played all the guitars and the bass, so those baselines are Corgan not D'Arcy. However, both Iha and D'Arcy play on Mellon Collie and it would interesting if you can hear the difference in playing.
@@jasonscott9645 from what I remember James Iha helped Corgan write Mayonnaise but didn't actually perform it in the studio but I definitely could be wrong. Now that you mention it he also may have done guitar on Geek USA but that could also be a situation where he helped write but didn't perform.
Great reaction! You should check out Veruca Salt’s debut album ‘American Thighs’, they’re also from Chicago like SP. They’re a super interesting band with fuzzy grunge sounding guitars and two female vocalists. I’d also love to see you react to Everything Must Go by Manic Street Preachers, their follow up to The Holy Bible.
For anyone that is a Smashing Pumpkins fan, you should check out the Reunion tour Seattle show. They get the two little girls on the album cover who are now adults of course, to redo the photo as adults its on the background screen at the start of the performance!
it is about the depresion in those years no job, no oportunities and the lost of your dreams being so young in New jersey and the states near by and how tenage people felt at that time
completely different direction than this album, but i know you’re a huge Death Grips fan so i think you would love Clipping’s Visions of Bodies Being Burned. probably my AOTY for 2020 and an absolutely phenomenal horrorcore noisehop record
You should listen to "Return of the Rentals" by The Rentals. Its Matt Sharps band, the bassist from Weezer from the 90's. Talk about a 90's sound, I think youll enjoy it
I'm here for Silverfuck. And I have a request. Please review Beers, Steers + Qveers by Revolting Cocks. This album dominated the college/alternative radio charts and underground dance clubs in 1990.
I'm late to the party but I wanted to tell you, Billy played almost every guitar and played all of the bass on this album. He went full-control for siamese Dream but let up on Mellon Collie (and it shows.) Also, seeing all of the Radiohead loot on your door I'm not surprised at how much you love this album.
Wow, you never heard "disarm" and "today" before? Re: freedom theme ... As far as I understand, Billy was going through a deep depression and went through a choice to live and not kill himself ... so, many of the songs seem to reflect that liberation from depression ... The song "today" is something he wrote as a joke to himself about his depression ... "disarm" is about growing up as an abused child ... "The killer in me is the killer in you" is one his most famous lines ... It's meaning is not literal and not easy to explain ... but it seems to speak powerfully to others who grew up in an abusive childhood.
this was perfect! for the next one..... The next album is 50/50 lyrics and music, keep that in mind, and they are dependent on each other, one of the top masterpieces ever made
I see from your board behind you that you are a Radiohead fan like me! Radiohead and Smashing Pumpkins are my all time two best bands. Best Radiohead album is OK computer, In rainbows and Hail to the Thief. These babies just cant be arranged.

It goes without saying that Mellon Collie or Pisces Iscariot should be next
Mayonaise the best fuckin song in the world!
All time classic album. Great to see you back Tony!
You still need to do Nothing's Shocking - Jane's Addiction. Hahahah
Dan Finkel Absolutely!
The first 90 seconds of Siamese Dream is still one of the most exciting things I’ve ever heard

It's meaning is not literal and not easy to explain ... but it seems to speak powerfully to others who grew up in an abusive childhood.
It was a great review!
this was perfect! for the next one.....
The next album is 50/50 lyrics and music, keep that in mind, and they are dependent on each other, one of the top masterpieces ever made
Lovely record!
You should react to Songs of Faith and Devotion by Depeche Mode if you haven't heard it. Such a heavenly album
i would listen to this album at least once a day from about 15 to 25 and its still my favourite album now I'm 43
I see from your board behind you that you are a Radiohead fan like me! Radiohead and Smashing Pumpkins are my all time two best bands. Best Radiohead album is OK computer, In rainbows and Hail to the Thief. These babies just cant be arranged.
This is a perfect album.
