In college, I had this Professor of History.
This was 40 years ago. I would look forward to his lectures even though not in my degree track.
He voice was calming, informative and intellectually spell bidding.
Thru out the whole hour, the lecture hall would be in this hypnotic silence.
All attention focused on him. The room breathing as one.
    I never understood why.
    Now I do. Thank you!

You MUST have a philological background, right? The way you approach, analyze and interpret texts is very sophisticated and feels familiar to me. It even reminds me of the literature lectures I attended at university and feeds my passion for meaningful cultural documents like books, paintings and music.

thank you so much for making this. it is very good asmr, and it’s also fascinating learning. in the terms of learning or diving into this subject more, have you heard of Paul Wallis?…he is just one of a few (brilliant) people that have a well rounded theory of ancient texts, that the so called gods weren’t gods at all but other advanced civilizations or beings that came here (or were already here before us) that controlled or influenced humans. it’s very interesting and well worth a listen or focus into.
thank you for the time and energy you have put into your videos. i just found you and am enjoying these immensely so far. :)

About the book’s focus on guilt/shame (and maybe originaly in Cristianity too): I think for some spiritual work or transformations to work or be done the person needs to have a mind/spirit free from guilt and other burdens.
Not that people “should” feel guilty, but that it is understood to be a common or universal part of human experience and that having some means or ritual to relieve the practitioner of their guilty mindedness or shame, allows the person to benefit from the rest of the spiritual process. 20th century psychology might view it as a releasing of an overdeveloped super ego, or a super ego that has grown out of balance with the rest of the psyche. If their god-sight is to be understood not as a literal seeing with one’s eyes “sense” but a far-seeing through one’s consciousness.

Wow! Your dive into the Popul Vuh stirred quite a few thoughts and connections in my mind. I'll preface this by saying that my musings here are pure conjecture but fun for me none the less. I'm a big fan of comparative mythology/religion/philosophy. When you mentioned the duality of Venus' association with both good and bad, and bringing adherents to the light and the underworld, I couldn't help but think about the Christian Morning Star (Venus) being an alternate name for both Jesus and the Devil. Earlier in the video you mentioned the god associated with Venus blasting darts at victims. I thought Cupid for a moment, but that might be more of a mythological cognate or coincidence. When you investigated the jaguar serpent god, I started thinking about the ouroboros. Perhaps it takes a break from eating itself in order to spew forth life. If missionaries both destroyed and preserved these texts, how much of their translations were influenced by western traditions either consciously or unconsciously? Even more interesting, does this point to even more evidence of some sort of proto people that time has forgotten save for a few clues in ancient texts? Thank you for both the relaxing and insightful content. 😊👍

    • @JessaLynnASMR
      @JessaLynnASMR  2 місяці тому +1

I didn't know that Venus was the alternate name for Jesus & The Devil - that is fascinating! To Cupid - love is violent and often aggressive...the connection makes sense.

    • @lovcua
      @lovcua 2 місяці тому

@@JessaLynnASMR There is, as some say, a very thin line between love and hate. Also consider that in Greek and Roman mythology there is a connection between Ares(Mars) and Aphrodite(Venus). The goddess of love had an affair with the god of war. Cupid may be the son of that relationship depending on the version of the story. I also think about all the gods and goddesses in various traditions (Hindu, Egyptian and Norse mythology, etc.) that are associated with both creation and destruction.
I was also struck by the Mayans viewing time as a spiral. I've heard of many indigenous peoples seeing time as circular rather than the western linear, but the spiral concept adds a whole other dimension. Thank you once again, and I look forward to more of this series.

Hi Jessa Lynn. I'm a new subscriber. Remember Apocalypto, the 2006 epic historical adventure film? It is a depiction of the sun-worship religion prevalent in Mayan Empire. Our star; the sun, was worshipped by them as well as by ancient civilizations throughout history. It usually involved gory human sacrifice. When the Aztecs sacrificed people to their deity Huitzilopochtli, the victim would be placed on a sacrificial stone. The priest would then cut through the abdomen with an obsidian or razor-sharp flint blade. The heart would be torn out by the roots still beating and held towards the sky in honor to the Sun-God. Spilling their blood on the temple altar, they then tossed the victims’ lifeless bodies down the steps of the towering Templo Mayor.
    .
The Aztecs believed that the sun god needed daily nourishment in the form of human blood and hearts and that they, as “people of the sun,” were required to provide Huitzilopochtli with his sustenance.
    .
Babylonians, Assyrians, Persians, and so on, were heavily involved in sun-worship too. Most notably the ancient Egyptians, who referred to the solar deity as Amon-Ra. The Roman Empire also worshipped the Persian sungod Mithra. In fact they dedicated the first day of the week after their celestial idol, and named it as "the venerable day of the sun", or Sun-day as it is still called today.
    .
Sunday actually made very little headway as a Christian day of rest until the time of Constantine in the fourth century. Constantine was emperor of Rome from AD 306 to 337. He was a sun worshiper during the first years of his reign. Later, he professed conversion to Christianity, but at heart remained a devotee of the sun. Edward Gibbon says, “The Sun was universally celebrated as the invincible guide and protector of Constantine.”
    .
Constantine created the earliest Sunday law known to history in AD 321. It says this:
"On the venerable Day of the sun let the magistrates and people residing in cities rest, and let all workshops be closed. In the country, however, persons engaged in agriculture may freely and lawfully continue their pursuits: because it often happens that another Day is not so suitable for grain sowing or for vine planting: lest by neglecting the proper moment for such operations the bounty of heaven should be lost."
    .
    Chamber’s Encyclopedia says this:
    .
Unquestionably the first law, either ecclesiastical or civil, by which the Sabbatical observance of that Day is known to have been ordained, is the edict of Constantine, 321 A.D.
    .
Following this initial legislation, both emperors and Popes in succeeding centuries added other laws to strengthen Sunday observance. What began as a pagan ordinance ended as a Christian regulation. Close on the heels of the Edict of Constantine followed the Catholic Church Council of Laodicea (circa 364 AD):
"Christians shall not Judaize and be idle on Saturday (Sabbath), but shall work on that Day: but the Lord’s Day, they shall especially honour; and as being Christians, shall, if possible, do no work on that day. If however, they are found Judaizing, they shall be shut out from Christ."
    .
Now guess what's on the pipeline as we speak. The Pope to Rabbis to Greta--are calling for a Sunday "Green Sabbath," forcing people to stay home in deference to Gaia. Now that people are used to perfect surveillance and enforced lockdowns, the stage is set for this truly Satanic inversion: worship of the creation, instead of the Creator, on a day chosen by the Catholic church.

the purp0se of self guilt , shame, keeps one c0nnected to god, it's a c0nstant reminder to be consciously aware 0f 0ur creat0r. it's imp0ssile as a human to be good enough in god's eye, hence his grace, but it is somewhat a torturous existence. i really feel one of the most important purposes of this actually relates not to oneself , but to overall civility. the fear 0f sinning and it's consequences is probably one of the biggest predictors of conscientiousness. if this world was full of conscientious people it would be as close to heaven as you can get.

I think there's something myopic in feeling the need to atone for other people's lack of cultural interest. "Diversity" is also a keyword for things intelligent people don't want to be associated with. Just get into the material, and let your natural interest in the subject shine through. I live in Mexico, and can assure you that hateful, ignorant people are everywhere. Myopia is a remarkably diverse trait. You have a great voice. The topic is interesting. Looking forward to other videos, but I'm not showing my papers to the cops at the "diversity" and "America guilt" roadblock. It's overplayed, and I don't waste my time listening to people who build those roadblocks in their own material. It might be the literal last thing we need right now.
Looking forward to future videos. Good luck.
