Tops has always surprised us big time with their build quality and how indestructible they are. But... it seems this time we pushed it too far. We found a Tops knife that couldn't take our abuse. The Tops Fieldcraft 3.5 in 1095 steel bit the dust... However! it is actually a pretty awesome knife!
update We got a new one from tops! Legends!

Happy Turkey Day to You Bushcraft Boys!
Lamnia's has some of the best deals you can get for classic, hand made Finnish puukos in reindeer hide neck sheaths. I ordered some to Canada as Christmas presents and they were awesome with beautiful burl handles and sharp carbon steel blades, plus the shipping with Canada Post didn't have any extra duty charges. Easily one of the best European companies I've ordered from, right up there with Varusteleka.
You guys should test the Tops Brush Wolf.
They're dutch...
Hey fellas, how long does the shipping take for your budget dbk knife to the US as I ordered one and I really cannot wait for it to get here! Super stoked
Tops uses differential heat treat . This is done so the knife will bend instead of breaking. The blade performed as it was designed to. And yes they have a secondary convex edge, not a true scandi grind but it works well.
Scandivex is the very best edge and grind from my experience. I usually like a full convex but they are typically thick behind the edge which I love for my bigger or really hard ise knives, Scandi is amazing at bushcraft and wood work but is so thin it can chip, but combining the two is really perfect.
@@chrisjosekuehl my favorite maker does his convex by first doing a 10dps per side scandi then convexing the whole knife, then adds a microbevel and it performs amazingly. typically 15 thousandths bte
@@ShoahBiz which knifemaker please?
Let me tell you something about the sponsor of this video.... Lamnia is great to deal with. I live in America. Have ordered twice from them. Excellent customer service. Hey, when you collect knives but online shops in your country don't have what you want, Lamnia is worth checking out.
Also, the reason why TOPS doesn't harden the handle portion is because it's better for a survival knife to bend, rather than break like glass. The latter far more likely to happen with a hardened handle, than a soft one.
ive seen a maker with a standard ht drill out a skeletonized tang to the max..way more than he'd usually do, then hammer the knife into a tree and loaded weight onto the handle until the knife broke. it breaks near the fulcrum point and not on the handle. if you use good quality epoxy and mechanical fasteners the handle is plenty strong enough with those reinforcements. I cant think of anything that you'd do with a survival knife that would break the knife at the handle before the blade
The mora robust also has a tang that bends.
I think they did it because bending is better than breaking in a survival situation.
Poor mikkie getting another nice knife destroyed 😂
I used to make a lot of walking sticks out of twisted trees like the one in the background in the end of the videos. Its really an eye catcher
Awww man. you guys come out with a bottle holder and I don't drink anymore.
I love these videos so much, the vibes are so fun and chaotic
Love the way you guys just casually knock up a fire in the pouring rain 🔥😊 Great video as always 👌
God i missed you guys
Hope all is well
You guys inspire people a lot and the way that you test things while making it into a skit is brilliant
All love ❤
Micky, pulling your pants up and saying it wasn't sharp enough was a bit of concern. But we knew what you were doing. 😂 Entertaining presentation, good work, boys.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE 🦃 😊
In this episode Marteen became Joe X hahaha😂
JOE X would break that with his bare hands
Joe is just riduclous with what he does.🤣
You can't do that Joe x is the Mike Tyson of breaking knives
It's nice to know you guys get almost as much rain as we do here in NW England. But at least we have more wind.
@Darrenski 🤣
I would love to see you guys take a trip to Austria and collab with you know who.
I have both that model and the one with the 90 degree spine from the factory. Both are excellent knives.
If the tang was hardened like the edge it would significantly increase the likelihood of breaking below the edge and would also make the handle transfer more impact energy to the hand when using the knife.
This is the little mini knife companion. Thinner steel than big brother. The heat treat changes towards the handle. I am sure there is a method to the madness. JoeX breaks everything, but he beats them on steel( removing the temper) until they break. This is a small knife so the change of temper towards the handle does not have a lot of real estate to make a gradual difference. Works well on the larger knives
Well i don't know about the bushcrafting knives from TOP's but the Wild Pig Hunter really does what its built for.
I love these guys
I liked the Tops BOB knife you guys reviewed years ago. It was a very tough knife and looked just like the fieldcraft. Not a good slicer. But a good survival and bushcraft knife. It was really tough for 154cm. It was the fieldcrafts bigger brother.
I have only purchased 154cm from tops except for one knife. The 1095 is very good but its edge retention isn’t for me. I gave it to my brother in the military and he uses to open MRE’s, and a few other non survival and bushcraft stuff.
@@chrisjosekuehl I usually just use a Leatherman when I was in the military for MRE and 550 paracord. 1095 isnt for me either. Tops really mastered the heat treatment of 154cm and wish more companies could follow suit.
Thanks meek !
I have several Tops knives and I have always been very pleased with the quality and performance.
This knife looks cool, but i just received my bushfriend 2000, and so far its amazing. Also I think the handle thickness is fine.
I didn't know I needed another knife...until I saw this.
You guys made my Thanksgiving! ( it's this harvest holiday we have here in the states.)
Your winter videos are so nostalgic!
How did the warranty go?
Need to know!!! 😂
WODAN BOYS
We also learned you can trust Mickey with a sharp knife but not a stick. Put the stick down and walk away.😂
Evening lads. Much love 🇬🇧
Tops knives are differentialy heat treated and usually have a big difference between edge and spine hardnesses.
Is that supposed to mean that it’s alright, that their crazy expensive 1095, continues to consistently fail?
@powersww1reset just stated a fact. If you watched the video, they asked if anyone knew if this was a tops thing or if they got a bad one.
@@davehill7771could also be a dud that was too soft though
I guess firecraft 3.5 was already taken buy White River.
Would love to see a review of some of the firecraft series like the FC-PKO or the FC-4 or above.
The only TOPS knife I have is the Black Rhino, damn if it's not a beast. I have a few more on my list that I want to get, but that's for another time.
The handle part, the tang, should not be as hard as the blade. But IMHO it should be at least spring temper. Annealed is too soft if the knife is not very thick.
i agree. leaving it softer can have benefits but this felt too soft
Tops is known and brags about their differential heat treatment. But I thought they still heat treated all of it. TOPS only has a few models that aren't.
a knife with mechanical fasteners and good quality expoy will not break at the handle under any type of practical use.
Happy Thanksgiving! 1:11 lol
At least it comes sharp, I have a competitor's US made carbon steel knife with a grind on it like a cold chisel and just as thick. I haven't even attempted to sharpen it, now that I have fixed my Craftsman power sharpening wheel maybe I will rebevel it to a scandi grind. Their stainless came well ground.
Ontario?
Who’s the maker? Esee
I just got done watching some videos on the Tyson fight. That was a good jab Mikkie. 👍🏻🇺🇸
This knife has been given a good review because Tops is a good company.... back in the early days of DBK a knife that performs as such would've been given a 3/10. What happened to the ratings? Sharpness, edge retention, fire steel scraping, carving, and etc?!?! Getting soft on the reviews guys 👎
They are greeting kick backs now. You can tell. Just listen to how they talk.
'Money talks' as they say... @jakefarley2449
The little bit i know about steel and knive-Making:
no knive is usually hardened the whole body. only the part with the edge. Otherwise, it can't obsorbe much. Like the BUCK.
What could be a better option within $200? I was looking to buy this knife but maybe I should look at other options?
White river knives’ ursus cub is better for $200
That was Awesome!!!
🇺🇸🇺🇸🪓🔪👍🏻👍🏻
The little knife that couldn’t
I used to be fascinated by the tops, how they can make a great design out of this simple steel to keep the focus great. But after the latest tests of this Polish creator or your project, I am more and more disappointed, I think that the tops is cheating its fans, and the price is not adequate to what you get. You guys are great, good job
They are overpriced for the steel they are using. You can get a Lionsteel for the same price with a M390 powder steel.
I still think it's mad how you can buy a big brute of a knife in S35VN or elmax or high end steel but the same company will sell a much smaller peace of steel with the pins and scales and sheath but they want similar money for a much smaller knife smaller blade ,scales and pins lol its a complete joke 🤣🤣🤣 JoeX says save your money 😂🤣😂
I'm impressed that you broke a TOPS Fieldcraft. I used to have one and they're pretty robust.
Guys please do next "Fox FKMD Parang." Maybe its same level with Extrema Selvans.
awe yea baby ive missed yall lol
Big Boinks!
I can see why they wear wooden shoes in the Netherlands 🇳🇱- wood will keep your feet dry in such a wet climate, plus can be used to start a fire 🇳🇱 🇳🇿
Thanks
Nice one boys!!!!
I’ve not bought a Tops knife yet, that does look interesting, maybe the full size would be better??
They did a TOPS BOB knife and it was a beefy knife with a large handle despite only having a 3.5 inch blade. It was not a slicer but it was made for taking a beating even though the one they tested is 154cm because of the thickness. I had one. It was a good knife. Edit: Actually 4.5 inch blade. But watch that old vid. It impressed me enough to buy one a long time ago.
I stripped the coating off or mine with paint stripper then blued it. Now the entire spine can be used to strike sparks on a rod.
Should test the WORK TUFF GEAR MT. LAGUNA.
Kind of envious, you have more fatwood on the property than I have been able to scrounge up on multiple dedicated trips...
Where do you live ?
@@ropyro8903 Denmark. I have found fatwood, often just in smallish very knurly pieces, never a "motherload".
@@Timeren2010 try to focus on fallen trees, overgrown with moss for a motherload. For me it trippled my findings.
@@ropyro8903 thanks for the tip, I'll try to find something overgrown. Always go for the fallen trees, those that fell by themselves, not cut, or the old leftover stumps, sort of surprised none of those have yielded anything sigificant yet. Still, not much luck so far. I can always find fatwood in the dead small branches in a pinch, but would be nice for once to find something worth the work...bit like going fishing I guess :) But I suppose going to the woods, or fishing, is a reward in itself, right :) ?
I'll never understand why companies thin out a section of steel, then look at the thinnest part of a handle and say ''ya that's a great place for a bolt hole..''
Zoals altijd weer een gave video!!
Hé Maarten welk merk jas draag jij?
Thin stock of a small blade.
Amazing that it took ANY of that.
Materials can get exponentially stronger with size and most blades made are in a sweet spot.
WTG Red Wolf in K329 steel would be a nice test to see. 😊
Review some eafengrow fixed blades please. The bigger the better
Cool small knife. Not the best o e ever, but a good one.
Great review guys. You two are incorrigible. 😂 Just got my BPSKNIVES knife last night. DBK Bushcraft knife, designed by the guys at DBK. Well done, I love it. Made in Ukraine 🇺🇦 ❤
That bottle holder is nice will it fit tall boys with out falling out?

Nice video. I'd like to see a Andrew Demco aus 10 vs magnacut fixed blade comparison. This is a good season for the video. A small knife comparison video would be good to have as well. I'll be sure to order a bottle holder asap, as I am stuck with crutches for a few months, and love coffee all day! Cheers brothers from another mother f#cker!
5 minutes in & waiting for Micky to discover his pocket full of wet twigs!
will the scandi version of the DBK Boker Bushcrat knife be available only via your website? would dealers have them? as I normally get them from the dealers together with other orders to make the most of expensive international shipping. Thanks.
Nothing felt better than watching that Tops blade file over like a soft shell taco. I'll still take a Kabar over a Tops blade.
Becker maybe lol, straight kabar is not very good
Paper legend like kabars and ontario junk
Start doing your sharpness testing in three places on every blade & use average. Knives can have hot spots and dull spots.
This ain't outdoors55 😂😂😂😂
do it properly: 5 places, remove top & bottom values, average the remaining 3.
we often do 2 or 3 but its not all in the edit or even on camera. but we check if nothings off especially on very dull or very sharp results

“Heat treatment is normally really good” Mikkie B😂

Does anybody know what brand and model of coat Maarten is wearing?
Thanks a lot in advance.
It's a carinthia parka 🤘

You guys are crayzie !
day 99999 of waiting for DBK boys to review some 70$ eafengrow survival knife in DC53 steel (non-powdered cruwear basically), preferably EF-142 because it's pretty similar to extrema ratio selvans.
EF does make a solid fixie no question
I want them to review eafengrow so bad 😩 specifically the 131
$70... The dollar sign always precedes the value amount
@@Lykapodium but you dont say, dollars seventy. You say seventy dollars
But tops pays to advertise and they can't promote their knife at a ridiculous price if they show affordable knives
It's raining in France to😢
For now on i vote that they can only use Maartin's knives lol
Joe X would be so proud!!!
I need a pair of those gloves... Hestra? :)

yes we're getting a new one!
Tops offers a 90 degree spine ground at factory for the 3.5!!!
Since TOPS differentially heat treats their blades, the bent handle is not unexpected at all.
Review the Bk82
It's basically a Bk2 in Magnacut
Hua guys great video as allways jsit sit back and enjoy I have been lightning my pack load and allways on the look out for a light capable bushcraft knife I have the kansbul witch I live and 130g it light is there a light capable knife out there I am sure if there is you guys can find it and maybe made a veido about it for us gram counters but it still have to be a fix blade and function will
Run a Mora Robust control with each knife you test.
Yeahhhhh…and that’s the problem with Tops’ differential heat treat.
