  • Through the years Magicshine has built a strong reputation with their competitively priced and bright LED bicycle headlight and taillights. More recently, Magicshine has taken that knowledge and expertise to expand their products into the outdoor lighting space with the MOD/MTL series of flashlights and MOH headlamps. As with their bike lights, the flashlights and headlamps utilize the latest LED technology and have highly competitive pricing. In this review, we’ll be looking at the Magicshine MOH 55 headlamp. With a claimed 4000 lumen output from the dual LED design, the MOH 55 is the brightest headlamp in the MOH lineup. Magicshine also offers two variations of the light, the $199.99 MOH 55 or the $299.99 MOH 55 Pro.
    The primary difference between the lights is that the Pro version uses the larger 10.Ah MJ-6118 battery pack (shared with the Monteer 6500S / 8000S) compared to the 7.0Ah MJ-6116C battery pack. While both battery packs are large, the MOH 55 headlight itself is compact with a premium aluminium housing. Even though Magicshine’s marketing photos show people hiking and skiing with the MOH 55 lights, in this review we’ll evaluate the MOH 55 as a cycling light as the large battery capacity and compact headlight size are well suited for road or mountain biking.
    One of our favorite features of Magicshine lights is the use of Garmin compatible mounts. Instead of using a proprietary design with limited mounting options, the MOH 55 can be used with any Garmin style mount. What’s unique about the MOH 55 is that out of the box, it includes a headlamp mount which uses a Garmin style adapter attached to an adjustable GoPro mount. This allows the headlamp angle to be easily adjusted as needed. With the MOH 55 Pro, Magicshine also includes a Garmin style helmet mount allowing the headlight to be mounted on a helmet which works very well with the lightweight design of the light. The compact design also means the MOH 55 can easily be used on any out-front mount and even mounted upside down...

    Been looking forward to your review of the MOH55. Any chance you could show a comparison of this (MOH55) to the MJ-906. I think both would be strongest MagicShine options for helmet mounted lights. Specifically how the light levels, beam patterns, and the affect of the thermal throttling when on high between the two. It looks like you have the makings for the ultimate night MTB setup with Monteer 8000 on your bars and either the MOH55 or the MJ-906 on your helmet with both run on one of the mid settings.

      Add the MJ-906S to the comparison

    • @TheSweetCyclists
      @TheSweetCyclists  3 роки тому

      We're working on the review for the MJ-906S now. The most obvious difference is that MJ series have the DRL instead of the 'soft beam cuttoff' deflectors on the lens. They're both quite compact, so perfect for helmet mounting as you said. Even the Monteer 8000S headlight isn't that heavy.
      We don't have the equipment to show the throttling (some of the people on flashlight forums show the lumen / time graphs) but will definitely try to show the Monteer / MOH beam comparisons in the review.

      @@TheSweetCyclists A simple way to get crude results would be to point the light at your fence in the back the yard, simultaneously turn light on the high mode or mode of interest while starting a video capture, walk away, return later, go through vid and note time light output throttles, capture a screen shot of the the diminished output, make note of all events, make rough estimate of where that output is (between low-med, med-high, below high but close to it. Going so far as to pointing a fan at it would do a good job of duplicating biking conditions. Result would be something like; here is an image on high when started, here is an image at XX minutes when the light throttled (I'd roughly guess it to be midway between hi and low, 3rd image of next event, and light went out at XXX minutes.
      Last light I bought, I returned because it would throttle down to a good step below medium and stay there after 5 minutes. My six year old light had a higher output after 30 min of use. Crazy thing is several reviewers had given it hugely positive reviews and when I asked if they had seen such results they commented with a yes it does that.

    • @TheSweetCyclists
      @TheSweetCyclists  3 роки тому

      We'll give that a try with a timelapse and see how it turns out. As you already know the results are pretty weather dependent. There are some MOH 55 reviews that show the output vs time and noted a steep drop off as they are designed for colder climates.

  • @peterkupka5421
    @peterkupka5421 3 роки тому +1

    Have you any experience with thermal management? In which temperature you can ride with full power 4000lm without interference of the thermal management or how long time...? thanks

    • @TheSweetCyclists
      @TheSweetCyclists  3 роки тому +1

      Unless you're in a cold climate and moving at a good speed, the 4000lm turbo mode does drop in output due to heat. Magicshine has done a good job with heat management and the metal fin housing, but it's a lot of power to push from the 2 LEDs. Unfortunately we don't have lumen per time charts, but at least in the colder weather we ride the light in the thermal throttling isn't that noticeable.

    Great review! Do actually have to mount the battery to the frame of the bike?

    • @TheSweetCyclists
      @TheSweetCyclists  Рік тому

      Mounting the wired battery pack on the frame is the most convenient location but you could also put the battery in a backpack / jersey pocket (you may need an extension cord though).

      @@GoProGoalieUzi I haven't tried the lights in that cold of weather, I can't imagine even riding when it's that cold. As far as mounts neither version of the MOH 55 has a handlebar mount (only a helmet mount). You can buy any mount that has Garmin or GoPro compatibility. Magicshine has a $20 dual sided out-front mount (what's shown in the video) here - magicshine.com/collections/mount/products/magicshine%C2%AE-mj-6272-out-front-bike-mount.

    Bro!! It stopped working!! Not even 1year!! It's not holding the charge! I disconnect the light and plug the battery. 2 solid green lights, and one small green one blinks...after it turns solid..I connect the light.. it turns on for a few seconds then off...brutal. I really needed it at night last week..any tips or idea?

      @TheSweetCyclists  9 місяців тому +1

      I'd recommend reaching out to Magicshine. It sounds like you might have a defective battery pack. With these wired setups, you can always buy a second battery as well which is a lot cheaper than buying another full light. Otherwise, Magicshine has quite a few other options like the Monteer lights with similar designs but a larger lighthead.

    8:38 Lux is not the same as lumen. Lux is lumens/sq meter

    • @TheSweetCyclists
      @TheSweetCyclists  3 роки тому +1

      Good catch, you are correct! Those labels should say "lumen" not "lux". Recently did a review of Kryptonite Incite lights which are "lux" rated and used same overlay templates. 4000 lux would be very impressive for a bike light.

    Great light, great battery. The cord to the battery is complete GARBAGE. I have gone through 2 of them in only 2-3 battery charges. They are not cold resistant and there is no proper strain relief on it. Fair warning...junk cord.

      Sorry to hear about the issues. One of the weak points of wired bike lights is always the cables. The new Magicshine lights have better designs than the past but I've never used them in extremely cold weather here in California.
