- In today’s video, I demonstrate how to sharpen your reel at home using a simple backlap method. I also demonstrate how to adjust your height of cut using an Accu-Gauge. And of course, I bring you along for today’s mow. Enjoy the video!

Another helpful vid bro 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Backlapping is one of those things I never really want to take the time to do... but right after it is done and that paper it’s so easy, I’m reminded that it’s so worth it.
For sure!
Damn your lawn is gorgeous!
Informative! I’m going to see / pickup a 220a tomorrow. Excited 😆
Thanks and congrats on the 220a
Reel Low Bermuda any tips on what to look for???
I just got a 220b so this is very helpful. Nice video!
Glad to hear it!
Another great how to video. Keep them coming.
Thanks!
Very detailed thanks for always helping... I don’t have a John Deere but I’m planning to upgrade soon just still deciding which to go with.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you so much for this very thorough and informative video! I just got a JD 180c last month and still learning as much as I can about it. I’m planning to try backlapping some time very soon. This video really popped up for me at the right time!
Awesome! Glad it was helpful! Have fun with your 180c. You will love it!
Thanks for the great info. Beautiful J. D. machine. Are the wheel transport axels removable or did you cut them off?
@@Eli-9 They will need to be cut. Axles are not removable like the GM.
Great video. Your JD is super clean. Gotta wash my reel now.
Thanks man!
Another great video from you as usual! Where have you been?
☀️ Great video and a great mow! Very informative, thanks! ☀️
Thanks!
love the buffer you have between rock border and grass itself...not enough people do that..its a great water catch and hinders water from washing straight down the grass and washing away dirt. (such a small yard, I use a Battery powered Weedwacker and really saves on gas/oil mix time)
Thanks!
Great info! What is that white plant with the little white flowers all over it in your back yard?
It’s a type of rose bush, but I can’t remember the exact type.
Reel Low Bermuda thanks! I’m in DFW and one of those would look great in my back yard too
Great job explaining. I back lapped my 180b yesterday morning with 180 grit and then stepped up to 220. Unfortunately I lost focus and caught my middle finger between the green support bar and blade when testing on paper. Fortunately I was wearing some thick cotton gloves and it just crushed above the nail bed. Seriously painful and swollen even today. Lesson learned.
Wow! That reel is unforgiving! My neighbor was looking at mine one day and reached in there and cut himself pretty bad!
it seems you have the reel pretty tight to bedknife. Doesn't John Deere spec a tiny gap between reel and bedknife?
JD recommends no contact between reel & bedknife. Helps maintain cutting edge.
Hi Please advise on how to remove the transport wheel axle ? It's a cool mower!
I have really enjoyed your video's. We have the same Mower well mine is a 180c . What's the highest you can get yours to cut?
I’ve never tried to raise it all the way up. I think it’s probably around 1.25”
Very informative video! Where did you buy your mower? I’m looking at a JD or Toro, both used. I’m hesitant on the JD because I am unable to find one locally, any ideas on that would be helpful.
I just got lucky and someone posted it on Craigslist. They are hard to find so when one shows up, jump on it!
I hear metal to metal when you turn the reel. According to JD service manual there should be a 0.001 in gap between the reel and bedknife and it still cutting paper. You shouldn’t hear metal contact when spinning reel. Nice JD and house. I have a JD 180 B with a groove front roller.
How much did you pay for yours?
Is there a height of cut kit for 180 that will allow you to get a higher cut? Toro makes one for the greensmaster. Also I just put a brand new 11 blade reel on mine I couldn't find a reel with 7 blades is there even a reel with less than 11 blades available? All I could find was 11 or 13 .
I have never wanted to cut higher, so I am not sure if a kit is available. I’m curious why you would want less than 11 blades?
Did mine a few weeks ago, that only pain in the rear is re setting my Tru-Cut blade to bed knife. They are not the easiest.
Same here! I figure because mine is a greens mower, nothing is easy.
Is it just me or do these greens mowers need a lot more back-lapping than a manual reel? I mowed all season with an earthwise 7 blade and it still doesn’t need a back lap.. yet I’ve had to do it twice on the Toro GM 1000 I bought a few months ago
My guess would be that powered reel mowers spin much faster than manual push mowers, and therefore wear the blades down quicker.
Reel Low Bermuda that is why. Imagine how fast you would be running if you had to spin the real manually as fast as a powered reel.
Anyone know how to adjust the handle on a John Deere 220C?
Anyone in south Alabama with a JD 180 I have a grooved roller on the front and want a solid roller so if anyone wants to trade let me know
