      It's the best video I've seen so far concisely explaining what makes a flugelhorn distinct from similar brass instruments.

    Always loved the sound of both, flugelhorn just has that awesome mellow sound, trumpet can be used in all sorts of music... Great video, thank you!

    flugelhorn has a more "euphonium" sound to it than the trumpet

      Flugelhorn sounds warmer and more rounded , trumpet is sharper , at least imo

      It really depends on the sound you need
      Sometimes you need the brightness of a trumpet shining through
      And sometimes ya gotta take a step back and flugel that soft round horn

      depend on the amount of air you have to cut thru

      Classical trumpet players are taught to play with a tone that seems too hard/harsh outside of the context of a orchestra. The trumpet sounds much mellower and sweeter than this when played by a jazz/blues guy who’s ‘on the quest’ like everything that’s overlooked in these videos, a large part is down to the player, not just the differences in bore size (although they clearly do help in this case too)

    This was a very concise, helpful explanation. Thank you. Honestly, I came here because of the movie Doctor Strange, when the titular character referenced the song Feels So Good by Chuck Mangione. "Where do you store all this useless information?" "'Useless?' The man charted a top 10 hit with a flugelhorn." Who says Hollywood doesn't (in a roundabout way) teach us stuff?

    So it’s basically the same as the difference between a baritone and a euphonium

    In short, the flugelhorn is a soprano euphonium.

    Flugelhorn - trumpet with a fur-ball in its throat.

    So the flugelhorn kind of sounds like a "soprano French horn," assuming such a thing existed. (Or a soprano tuba, which is also conical.) I'm thinking I prefer it. I wonder why it has had almost no use in a symphony orchestra.

    • @matthieucalu
      @matthieucalu 3 роки тому +3

      It’s exactly a soprano tuba, invented by the Belgian Adolphe Sax. Besides the saxophone he also developed a range of brass instruments called saxhorns: they go from what’s now the tuba up to the soprano saxhorn (the flugelhorn).
