Meet the new and improved Tara Gustin. 10 days after laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery at CHI Health Immanuel (formerly Alegent Creighton Health), she's not only on the mend, she's hard to keep up with.
"I'm shocked at how good I feel. Never in a million years did I think 10 days after surgery, I'd be out shopping and running around the neighborhood. Life is grand," Tara said.
Tara admits the first couple of days were hard but then she felt like a new person. She was able to get out of bed, tolerate fluids, and get a shower.
"I think I expected I would go in have surgery and feel bad for a month or so. I'm 10 days out; on day 6 I was shopping. It's amazing," Tara said.
Tara is down 23 pounds since starting a liquid diet 10 days before surgery. She's wearing jeans she hasn't worn in 2 years.
"Talk about a happy moment. I did a happy dance that I was able to put jeans on and wear blouses I couldn't wear before," Tara said.
Just losing that little bit of weight has made it easier to walk and sit. Tara says it's motivated her to do even more.
"In the next 30 days, I should expect another 15 to 20 pound weight loss...then after that 2 pounds a week," Tara said.
Tara is no longer hungry all the time. She says food doesn't consume her day and there's a lot less of it on her plate.
"I had a piece of fish -- I ate a third of it and I was full. For breakfast I had half a scrambled egg and I was full," Tara said.
Tara not only had to learn about portion control but she also had to take a solid look at how she was eating.
"I have learned your bites have to be very small - that's been a challenge. I'm used to taking big bites. Bites need to be the size of an erasure on a pencil - that's a change - and then chew, otherwise, that will hurt going down," Tara said.
For the first time in her life, Tara has hope about her weight -- hope she won't be obese forever. She's glad she had the surgery. She wants people to know it's not as scary as she thought it would be but you have to be committed.
"I feel better already. There is this fire instilled in me. How much better can I feel if I lose 60 pounds maybe 80 pounds. Right now life is grand -- it's amazing," Tara said.
Chicken after 10 DAYS? Holy moly! I've been told fluid 2 weeks, and puree for another 2 weeks before I even go into soft solid foods.
Exactly. I'm 10 days PO and on fluids the first 2 weeks. Then I'll be on puree for a week, then soft foods for 2 weeks. But this video was done 6 years ago and the med industry changes overnight sometimes. I've lost 14 lbs in these 10 days and I'm still wearing the same clothes. I don't know how she is wearing different size clothes already.
I had mine done September 23 and I’m still on liquids next Monday I’ll be able to start the soft foods... per my dr you have 90 days to be in the clear of any harm and don’t fully heal from the inside for 10 to 12 months. I plan on staying on soft food till I hit 90 days!
trg75 that sounds about right. I misspoke. I will be on soft foods for 2 months not 2 weeks. But I really think they need to delete this video
Fat Dawny , I agree this video gives inaccurate information, there is no way she can be wearing different clothes in such a short period. I still fit in mine a little lose but not to the point where I have gone down a pant size. Even when my girlfriend had it done 10 years ago she went two weeks on liquids before her surgery then another 2 weeks on liquids then started soft foods. So I don’t see how in the world they are eating what they say.

I was at 266 before and as of today I’m 244.
trg75 I’m doing well. 7 weeks post op and down 28 pounds. Was hoping for more by now, but at least I am not 306 anymore.

It would be nice to see an updated video, as I know guidelines have changed overtime, but hearing this from a patient perspective helps ease my anxiety
That's insane!! I just had my surgery Tuesday, today I started full liquid and will be on it for 2 weeks, then 2 weeks of pureed.
How long did it take you from consultation to surgery day? And can you do doctors appts before the surgery and not have to do it before the surgery
I had mine on the 1st of August and after she said that she was eating chicken I had to check how long ago this video was made. It was made 9 years ago. A lot has changed 🤣
I’m 10 days post op and I feel like shit. Taking a shower takes everything out of me. Going to run errand makes me feel like I’m going to faint .
Same here. And I was admitted back in for not passing bowels and stool....this is months out not 10 damn days!
Jennah's World I’m praying it only gets better from here. This is not what I signed up for. I took a month off work and there is no way in hell I’m going to be able to go back to work in 2 weeks. When I told my surgeon that I have not had a bowel movement he dint seem to concerned all he said was we cleaned you out before surgery and you aren’t eating much so I don’t expect you to. I was like oh wow and I ended up taking a shot of a liquid laxative. I’m not trying to end up in the hospital. I honestly think something is wrong because I can barely get 20oz of liquids down a day
One week post op. Vertical Sleeve. I did not stay over night in a hospital. My Dr. does these procedures at his own surgery.
The first 24 hours I threw up every half hour- bile. I couldn’t keep the oral nausea medication down. The next day I asked about a suppository for the nausea. I got that and a patch worn behind my ear that lasts for three days. What has kicked my slightly smaller 😜 ass is acid reflux. I completely relate to the weakness. Going to try protein shake tonight. Hopefully the shakes will give me a bit of energy.

I'm 10 days post op and was scolded by my surgeon yesterday for eating pureed egg salad. Liquids for 21 days I was told and that's to allow the pouch to heal.
MargaretGwen1957 strange how varied recs are - I had purée week two and soft veggies and proteins week 3-5 (moving to regular foods). I actually never heard of someone having 21 days of liquids - yikes!
Seriously follow the diet. Don't break it.

I am in turkey and had my surgery sleeve gastrectomy on Monday June 30th. I was discharged Wednesday June 1st. Today is June 2nd. I was able to take a shower yesterday night and was able to walk yesterday and today as well. I am able to drink a lot of water and have not experienced any Pain. I am going on my 3rd day tomorrow!

@@reinajosefina2930 I had the full bypass 10 days ago, and that’s supposed to be more painful. I’m almost 100%. Walking around well, almost no pain. No dumping. I follow the doctors instructions almost 100%. The only real side effects I felt was really sharp gas pains, but that was pretty much gone by day 3. And I was so tired the day after they discharged me. Slept most of the day. Everyone is different though. Don’t be nervous, trust your doctors, you’ll be fine!

Why is everyone having such a bad experience… I’m 4 days post op no pain. Stayed overnight in hospital 1 day. Lost 11 pounds so far. Maybe it depends on age?? Follow everything your surgeon says.

I had surgery 10 days ago. NOT going shopping until today. Was on oxygen but hope to be off soon (I live at 7000’). Was told no lifting more than 20 lbs for 6 weeks. Still on liquids until 2 weeks postoperative. Then puréed foods. BTW. I am 63 years old. Feeling better every day.
It's like she has been told to say a bunch of lines. Like she's advertising surgery as opposed to what it's really like.
I had it done 15 days ago and I feel pretty good. No way in this world did they want me to start eating tho. I'm now on strained creamed soups for 10 days and it sucks! And having to take prednisone for a few blisters that popped up around the incision sites is really about to make me chew the paint off the walls aren't helping. I was hungry before taking them but it's even worse now lol! I had to do the liquid diet a week before the surgery and from then til now, I've lost 51 lbs. I have 153 to go to my long term goal weight and to get rid of the diabetes and sleep apnea but good goobidy goo.... it's a hard road but one I am glad I decided to take!

I am 10 days in and have been liquid all the way, and she is taking Fish? Chicken? Is she serious? For the next few weeks I can only take blended foods, not a solid fish fillet
35 days of liqued and full liqueds.....how the hell was she able to eat solids!!! Im 15 days post op i still feel pain when walking...etc

@@barbaraberry4610 you just have to snack or eat healthy diet foods related to your plan. Or make yourself busy. The best medicine for that is exercising !
Dam I'm on day 5 I got the gastric sleeve and a breast reduction and the freaking gass is ridiculous and they took 10 kg from my breast

Wow I get my surgery on the 30 this month.. I'm just worried myself too because when I eat I would take big bites of food... I'm addicted to soda and these last few days havnt been to kind for me .. headaches but I know it'll pass through..

I’m ten days out I had gas pains for three days but I was up and moving and even went shopping now i feel normal no pain at all only if I drink too much or too fast I sometime get a bit tired but I’ve only lost 10 pounds so far ps I’m 54

@@amyburns5199 oh amy the best thing I have ever done, I wish I saved up and got it done years and years earlier, I'm losing 2kg a week, food is very satisfying I'm never hungry compared to what I use to be.... it's great...my surgery was great worth every cent of the 28k... the only food that made me feel very sick so far is eggs lol, I'm feeling great...I was 127kg after the 2 week pre op diet and 6 weeks since surgery haven't lost nearly 17kg so far

hi everyone, i am thinking about this surgery. I am just so sick of being overweight. Which is easier to do? Taking half a stomach sounds so scary. Also, my fatty batty arms. do you think the doctors could help with that as well? I guess my insurance should be the one I need to ask these questions. Any advice would be helpful. It's not as scary of a process like what she said. I had gastric bypass back on October 16th 2019 and it wasnt as difficult as I thought it was going to be . If you have any questions for me feel free to ask. I'll try to answer them when I can

@@deadspacegrave2219 May I ask what you were instructed to do to prepare for surgery and then after surgery? Its interesting how uneventful the recovery you can be for some people and for others that struggled with vomiting and air/gas that remained trapped in stomach. Were you given any pointers on how to make your recovery an uneventful one. I've had a hysterectomy and my recovery from that was uneventful. I'm hoping that serves as a good indicator to determining how I will recover from bariatric surgery 🤞
If you don't mind... may I ask your age. I am 53 and my surgery date is set for Aug 9, 2022. My mind right now is all over the place, I'm wondering will my body heal quickly because of my age.
I am 56 years old and I am 2 weeks post op and I feel great, still drinking The protein shakes and water and I was exercising day 3 after my surgery.

I rather just control my eating and work out . This seems like torture to only eat soup or liquid
People with a food addiction can’t make that choice. They need help. Good on ya for being able to be in control.

@@Diabla2blea firstly im doing great now , the surgery went amazingly , didnt feel a thing and don’t remember anything, the first week in my opinion is the hardest , you feel weak you cant eat you cant move a lot. Until now i lost about 35 kilograms in the last 5 months. If there is anything else you want to ask please do

Not really , I had gastric bypass back on October 16th 2019 and everything she explained is pretty much the same .
Forget this surgery. Not worth the time off work and then the possibility of having to have hernia repair down the road. Which I had a hernia going into the surgery and they couldn’t fix it. I don’t care how much weight I lose from it I wish I had talked myself out of it. And bring mentally prepared you kind of can’t be because that’s why it’s done anyway. I would rather be prepared to tel myself no at the grocery store than go through this again. I want my old stomach back and given the chance to exercise and eat better. This grumbling of the stomach from too much or too little of food taking vitamins, gas and etc isn’t worth it.
All that after 10 days seems silly, why are you in a rush to undo their hard work 🙄
