The Daring Rescue of Sjaak Rijke by French Special Forces | April 2015

- In 2015, French Military intelligence located a hostage that was being held in a camp in the North of Mali. Although the identity and nationality of this hostage was unknown, the French High Command sanctioned a rescue mission to free the individual. After much planning and preparation, the greenlight for this operation was given in early April 2015.

Well said
The assault groupe is from 1RPIMa SAS (stick actions spéciales) so 2 stick CTLO (c9ntre terrorisme libération d'otages) with helicopters Caracal from 4 RHFS. The 13RDP (dragons parachutistes) make renseignements before operations specials forces. The guys of 13 is a little mad for made "Au delà du possible" and don't make assault. Tanks you by all BFST (Brigade forces spéciales terre).
Thank you from France whis me a opérateur GCP (pathfinder). I have 50 old.
Three and a half years as a hostage... Absolutely unimaginable the willpower required to survive even mentally
It’s bizarre right because he must have had accepted his fate twice 🤔🤷♂️ Like wow I’m a prisoner of terrorists that’s not gonna change 😳 and then well I guess I’m free again now lol ☯️ Mind blown
Even better considering the intelligence required for such an operation in the middle of nowhere. Kudos to the French Intelligence Departments.
The regiment was likely 1st RPIMA as hostage rescue is one of their skills.
The 13th RDP is an intelligence gathering unit.
Thank you France for bringing Sjaak back to the Netherlands!
On n'abandonne personne aux mains des sauvages .
@@Serviteur_du_saint_empire Merci beaucoup!
I find it amazing that the French Army risked the lives of their soldiers for a hostage they didn't even know where he came from! Thanks France !
On n'abandonne personne aux mains des sauvages
I appreciate that the French military would organize a rescue operation without knowing who the hostage even was. And all apparently while leaving their politicians in the dark. Good changes for France.
Their job is to do that, politicians get in the way
French military: We have an actionable mission and will execute with precision.
French politicians: We don't know where we're going, but we're on the way.
😁
French SAS forces liberated the north of the Netherlands 78 years ago on this day
Never thought id be sat in Mali, watching a LfE video on Mali. 🤣
Stay safe
Yea stay safe lad 🙏🏼
Take care ro
Do you work for Wagner ?
Another quality instalment. Good on you ! 💛👊👍
French SF is at par with the Brits, and better than most other European SF units. They don't get enough credit
They don't need to get credits
They are better than the tier 2 power Britain. France is tier 1.
Discreet they are
The French SAS have the same motto as 22SAS....There history goes back to WW2, same as French navy marine commandos who take their history from Royal Marine commandos in WW2 they wear a Green beret just like marines ....
I am reminded of a quote by John Ringo in one of his novels: "We'll take the French as allies. But just the soldiers. French politicians not so much." (sic)
Especially with Macron's recent dealing with China...
@@noynoybaqui Dealing's a variable term. The US has deeper economic dealings with China. So does Germany, etc. The real problem is Frogs will never be happy playing second fiddle to anybody. It puts their big noses out of joint. Macron, DeGaulle, Mitterand, the list of difficult French leaders goes on.
I think Macron was just looking for a foreign policy distraction, and he was probably still pissed at the USA for cutting them out of the Aussie sub deal.
Less than americzns with their super military powers

Funny when you have Trump :)
Nice work France 🇫🇷 👍
Now I'm curious on if the Dutch were searching for him as Dutch KCT operators were operational in Mali during that time. As a Dutch citizen I habe my doubts on the will power of our government to habe set up a operation like that. No disrespect to the KCT ofcourse. Those guys are insanely skilled and true warriors.
About the last part, when talking about whether or not the french military knew or not about the presence of the hostage, just note that F. Hollande iss well known in France for being the champion for not being sure about what he was doing and/or what he was saying 😅😅😅
Great Job
The French are a very competent force, providing key capabilities to fight terror in Africa! NATO
Terror that France causes by exploiting and robbing the region of its wealth and resources.
Discreet, professional and willing to plan and carry out a complex operation, to enter combat to protect and rescue a hostage whose identity is not even confirmed.
Truely this is special forces at their best.
Great video - as always! Any thoughts on the Dash-7 in that pic of Rijke in Bamako? That’s a Canadian designation… the dude to the right is obviously an operator. We (🇨🇦) had personnel in Mali … wonder if there was a Canadian presence with JTF2 or CANSOFCOM?
Your only evidence would be a faint whiff of maple syrup at the target site.
As a French it is shameful how discreet and secret is our armed forces even when there is successful operation like this one communication is kept as the minimum. It doesn't highlight how brave these men are and we wonder why patriotism is low here.
As it should be. Humble, quiet heroes.
Why ashamed? That's how things should be.
Yeah it's a shame. France likes to keep its military stuff very discrete.
Be thankful you get even this much information about French Special Operations from the government. The Canadian Government basically acknowledges that CANSOFCOM exists, and very little else. The almost complete lack of information and accountability is deeply worrying, especially if you believe some of the more juicy and salacious rumors about CANAOFCOM activity over the 30 years
Discreet is smart. I wish the U.S. sof would be a little more discreet; too many book deals and talk show appearances *cough* SEALs *cough*. There is no strategic or operational advantage to not being discreet in these types of things.
Lucky man!
The sheer mental strength to endure 3 years as a captive. Especially with that similar hostages to aligned groups have had their heads hacked off in front of a camera, and any day they may just do that to you, well its is pretty astounding.
Thanks. A well done video about a little known operation. However, a bit of background info about French involvement in Mali would be appreciated. Keep up the good work.
Intresting
Can you do a video on bravo two zero??
Les français sont très bons et aident ❤❤❤
Make a vídeo about GIGN rescue of childrens in loyada 1976
You should do stuff too about Panama and Grenada
viva la France, the founding home of European liberty.
Not Viva (spanish) but :" Vive la France" 😅
Always have loved your channel and love your content, but on a few recent videos, I felt like you’ve left out some details that people would enjoy hearing. Any chance that you can research these operations and give more details and more contact going forward and each video?
??????????
@@SwissMarksman Maybe because he didn't have all details, like not even knowing which units were used, or how the operation was executed....
Rest assumed, whatever info he found on this operation has been included in this video. If there are further details you may be privy to that this channel may not have been aware of, please, feel free to tell us.
Well done the French. It's a shame that at one time the Dutch could have done it themselves.
So the Dutch knew he was there...?
Oh, believe me, KCT is up to the job, but probably no one knew where Sjaak Rijke was.
Maybe thé CPA10 unit . Otage rescue specialist👍
All operations like this always has a back up, if something went wrong.. They have hundreds of back up ready to response.
French Special Forces are as good as any on earth.
@Mathis Colardelle don't underestimate the quality and power projection capabilities of the French special forces.
@Mathis Colardelle Why do you say that?
It all Comes down to Gear and to the person in all these spec ops units that just train on daily basis
@Mathis Colardelle Don't be stupid, what about the french SAS and marine navy commandos? All British trained going back to WW2, commandos wear there berets like Royal marine commandos, I'd do some research, before commenting, you balloon head...
Did Remote Viewers find him?
🤔 This is one of those stories that you would never believe it if it was in a movie people would say it’s too unrealistic it’s too far-fetched 🤷♂️ but reality proves again that it’s always stranger than fiction 💯☯️
holland was a terrible president and it simply woudn't suprise me that he didn't understand what the spec forces told him
Agreed that Hollande was abad president for France but must acknowledge he had the guts to react swiftly to order the Mali operation that saved this country from invasion, and also authorizing this rescue.
@@richarddykiel8141 A traitor to the nation just like Sarkozy and Macron. Should rest at the end of a guillotine for high treason.
the french are badasses
Politicians telling lies, there’s a shock 😂
Why didn’t the Dutch carry this out? Why did the Dutch fail it’s own citizen?
A HAHO or HALO from a C-130 at altitude could have effectively dropped in the necessary troops, quietly.
I'm pretty sure they thought about it
It was night so maybe safety concerns
What they COULD HAVE, is of no interest to the actual operation....
Too much can go wrong with an operation like that. Those are a lot more rare and desperate than one may think
That's a lot more assets and logistics and you'd have to land over the horizon and walk in anyway, easier just to use helos
I find it odd that if he was held hostage for 3 years how come no ransom offer was ever made? And I'm as he really a high value target or just a random civilian that was kidnapped
Any citizen should be considered "High Value". I'm also fairly certain in military HVT is a technical term.
@@helios4753 true tho I often see it used for a vip or some important person not saying he's not important but the term is used typically for someone like a diplomat or celebrity
@@tazman8012 any hostage would he a HVT. Maybe the media uses it incorrectly
From what i've heard at the time, they fell upon the hostage while raiding the camp and didn't knlw there was one at all ... but command decided to play it as if they knew so they didn't look like reapers
"I have heard" very reliable source indeed.
@@shakya00 its said in the video you're currently watching jackass
News come from french newspapers
5:34 The military spokesman says they knew a hostage was being held, but didn't know the identity of the person . So they did know.
@@stevewilson6390 nope the Ministry later said they did not know a hostage was being held here and they were surprised by its presence. Its even said in the video
@@MrYolrs
Actually what is said the government statement was lost in translation! It goes on to say at 5.34 time line the military knew it was on hostage rescue mission. I have listend again to what was published and read out ?
this really show the US military capability is on another scale compared to other nation
this wasant the US. This was france, but yes the US is the best in the world.
