The Daring Rescue of a Combat Helicopter Crew | June 2019

- Опубліковано 2 вер 2022
- In June 2019, during Operation Aconit, a French Gazelle Helicopter went down in enemy territory in Mali. As news of the downing spread, the crew of a nearby Tiger Helicopter decided to fly-in to the front-line and rescue the Gazelle's three-man crew, including two pilots and a sniper. This is the story of that most incredible rescue.

I am super proud to announce the release of an eBook project I have been working on over the past few months!
This book is part one of a series that will cover the histories of every Division that was active in the British Army from September 1939 - January 1947. Part one covers the Armoured & Cavalry Divisions.
The histories in the book cover a Divisions full story, from its formation to disbandment, and everything in between, including movements, actions, planned moves, key dates, commanders etc. Also included is a full outline of a Divisions movement in the U.K. and in the post-war period, two topics that are often overlooked in the historiography of the British Army. For some of the Divisions, such as the 9th Armoured, 10th Armoured and the 1st Cavalry, this is the first time in over 80 years that their war chronicle is told in full.
If you are interested and would like to purchase a copy of the book, be sure to check out the link below:

I wouldn't necessarily describe what happened to France in WW2 as a military defeat, more of a political self defeat by a few individuals, not the soldiers themselves.
That Tiger crew showed true courage under fire to save the Gazelle crew. And Max showed true bravery saving the two pilots. RIP Cor. Maxime Blasco.
I hope that the French Government recognised what all of these men did and that they were awarded bravery medals.
@@alonsocushing2263 I'm sure they do.
He was posthumously promoted to sergeant
At no time was it said that the Tiger Crew came "under fire" while affecting the rescue.
Corporal Maxime Blasco was a true warrior, a hero and a kind of modern knight. After his death on the field of honor (59 French soldiers died in combat to save Mali from the Islamic Caliphate), he was presented to the whole nation as an example to follow for the youth of France.
He received a state funeral in the courtyard of the Invalides, was promoted to the rank of sergeant and was made a knight of the Legion of Honor posthumously.
I want to tell his parents that I associate myself with their immense pain, and that they can be proud of their son. I want to tell his young son to follow in his father's glorious footsteps.
Rest in peace Corporal Maxime Blasco, thank you for your service, you country must be proud of you.

I'm French, it's great to see an english speaking channel talk about something else than our military failure during WWII, bringing this kind of story to those who are unaware of them is amazing, i myself was unaware of some of the details. thank you for this amazing video
I'm pretty sure the channel is from the UK, as am I. I'm just pleased that we're all on the same side as allies. The French do some pretty amazing things that don't get publicity this side of the Chanel.

Maxime Blasco was part of Chasseur Alpins (mountains troop), these guys are badass too !
@@JoJo-vm8vk Thanks for the info. I mainly knew, and have a couple of friends, who are ex legionnaires. I met some during UN service in Lebanon, and also met some French reservists during the CIOR in Stavanger, Norway in 2010. Fine bunch all of them....
My friend who are in the alpine hunter (chasseur alpin) share a room in military base with Maxime Blasco. He said he was a nature man, very simple and very human. He save his crew despite his very hard wound in his spinal, he save his collegue
Now a section wear his name in his honor
It never ceases to amaze me that people rise to a situation, brings out heroism of this magnitude. I often ask myself; “Would I?”
Much is about training. You act on instinct, not out of will....
Hopefully you will never have to find out.
@@Lassisvulgaris training can only do so little, every soldier thinks of “what would i do in a situation like that?”. The fact is, you cant train heroism, even the biggest guys fumble under pressure and bullets flying around, thats what makes heroism so special :)
@@lukasborgmans3983 Exactly. I have tour of Peace Keeping in Lebanon, and having bullets around your ears (or shells passing over you) is no fun, even if you know they are not meant for you. So I know people will react different....
As a French, it was a very sad news to learn the death of Maxime Blasco. We've heard of him two years ago on the national news following its act of bravour on that day of June 2019. In the documentary he his interviewed and at the end he said that at first he promised himself that if he ever have an accident he will end his military career, but he actually realized that he is addicted to it. The journalist then ask him, "will you go back to Mali ?", he smile and reply "I will".
I wish more young people in France would know the story of the that guy and learn from him, instead of spending their whole days insulting the police and selling weed.
Rest In Peace Maxime.

What a phenomenal story, Max and the helicopter pilots are absolute heroes.
I felt quite emotional upon reading that Max had subsequently been KIA but that said, in his time with us, he achieved way more than I could ever even imagine doing.
Maxime Blasco received his 4th Croix de la Valeur Militaire (equivalent to the Croix de Guerre for non-World War/homeland defense conflicts except Kosovo) for the action portrayed in this video. When he was killed in Mali in 2021, he was given a national funeral in the courtyard of the Hotel des Invalides, under the gaze of Napoleon's statue, and posthumously promoted to Sergent and inducted into the Legion d'Honneur. His 8 year old son was made a ward of the French State (which means all of his schooling and healthcare are provided for by the State until he turns 21).
The worst thing is that he wasn't known in the general public before his death even though he wasn't even special forces, so no need for anonimity. Your video will probably be news to most of my compatriots.
He was a commando, they're still under the rule of anonimity, the "Groupement commandos montagne" existence wasn't revealed until Afghanistan 2007 (or 2004) and the death of two of his members.

This one gave me goosebumps. RIP Corporal Maxime Blasco
There was an American Apache pilot in 2004, Iraq. They touched down to save two downed helo pilots. Given the circumstances of the area, the Apache pilot landed on/near the crash site and extracted two of the survivors. They placed one survivor into one of the seats in the cockpit of the Apache. While the other pilot strapped the injured pilot on the side of the aircraft and then himself to the other side of the Apache aircraft.
Pretty sure it's been covered here before. Or maybe it was done by "The Operations Room".
For fucks sake it's not about the Americans in this video.

I was able to work with some foreign legion guys and some of those cos operators and Afghanistan they were some of the craziest and down the Earth guys I've ever worked with. Them along with the Polish with some of the most fluid and generous guys down range.
That’s one of the most inspiring rescues I can recall.
That is an amazing story. I hope those pilots to the tigers got medals for their actions
Damn, that truly is an incredibly daring rescue that showed the true extent of bravery required for all involved. The improvisation of using the attack helo's structure to transport the wounded was not only quick thinking, but an incredibly dangerous undertaking given the condition of the two pilots. At that point youre of course forced to face the reality of either dying there, or going for a ride on the side of an attack helo but still...cant imagine how difficult/painful it was for those 2 pilots to hang on with essentially nothing but the strength of their upper body/arms due to their legs being out of commission.
Amazingly couragious Tiger pilots and TOTAL STUD SNIPER!!! Good job guys, God Bless.
Thanks again for bringing these extraordinary acts of heroism and bravery to a larger audience

In 2023, we are becoming ever more selfish, greedy & self focused as a species. Few in our societies today
either consider or act under threat of death to save/help others. Such militray people do this regularly
and are rarely acknowledged or named. No matter the politics of actions within any military, it is the fact
that people of integrity and selflessness still join the military knowing the potential dangers of such!
All I can say is that these people have my 100% respect & gratitude for doing what they do by choice!
Many humans don't deserve to have such people putting their lives at risk for such ungrateful ignorant
fellow humans.
