I don’t understand why people consistently say that graphics shouldn’t count for FF games? Square has consistently used the mainline FF games as a graphical showcase and to set the standard. Each FF reveal becomes the benchmark for that era/generation. You can’t say go back to its roots and then say don’t worry about graphics. That goes hand in hand with the mainline series. Also I personally think FF7 remake and rebirth have the best combat system in recent memory. Better than metaphor, FF16, and any other recent RPG.
There are multiple points to adress. First of all: Final Fantasy wasn't so much about the graphcis. It was more about the visuals and the artdesign and visual storytelling. At some point the developers thought it would be about the graphics but they missunderstood that. Second: We have reach a point where story and gameplay suffered a lot because they started to care way more about graphics than anything else. That basicly started with FF13. And third: No one is asking them to do like pixel games again. They just need to find a better balance. Look at Clair Obscur Expedition 33. It was made by 30 person indy company. And even though it might not be on the graphical level of FF16 it does have everything FF fans wants from FF. In terms of FF9R, leakers said Square expect mixed reaction to FF9 remake due tot the cartoonish graphics. Well, I think they will be proven entirely wrong with that.
It’s so stupid that people are essentially trying to get Square to run away from the concept of triple A games. Final Fantasy VII CREATED that concept and that culture. PlayStation bankrolled the trilogy. It is not going backwards into a turn-based game with worse graphics.
@@Evidancer since final fantasy 7 the mainline series has been about graphics and pushing the industry. The mainline series has never not been viewed as such whether it’s from fans or critics. FF10 showed us what the PS2 was cable of. To say that the developers misunderstood what drove the, to create the game is wild. Look at any interview from FF7 onwards and you will hear how they wanted to push graphical fidelity. They even made whole new game engines for the series to help with that innovation. That’s why FF13 still looks good today. I never said anything about pixel games again. I just said that if you want the series to go back it’s “roots” then you can’t say don’t care about graphics because for over half of the series lifetime it has been about graphics. Also you’re comparing it to a game that hasn’t even come out yet. Expedition 33 certainly looks good but no one here has played it yet and for all we know it could be below average. Fans really hate when developers try to innovate no do different things with series which is nuts to me. I would hate to play 16 FF games and they all play the same. As much as I love atlus metaphor isn’t much different from P5 and it shows. It’s still a good game but give me something fresh and different to sink my teeth into.
@@kqm2010 What you wrote is exactly the misunderstanding, I've talked about. There were always games before FF7 and FF10 that were graphically much more impressive. And overall they were far from really pushing the limits of the console hardware. Both on the Playstations and of course on the PC. When people say they want to "go back to the roots" they mean that Square should go back to what they were so loved for back then. That was storytelling, worldbuilding, art design, experiment and evolve turn-based systems. Neglecting these qualities in order to concentrate mainly on the graphics was the beginning of the end. The claim that fans hate evolvement is also a missunderstanding. The fans hate that the series DIDN'T evolve for almost two decades now. Instead they just changed by jumping to one different genre to another. This is not evolvment at all. This just change. And in a very radical way that is very unusual for a brand and naturally alienate it's fandom. Because they simply doesn't address their main audience anymore. Plus their changes weren't about evolve anything else either. They instead just reuse concepts that are actually outdated or have been done better by other franchises already. Stuff like the Ubisoft formula or a DMC-ish battle system. The only thing were they actually evolved was the minigames because Intermissions Fort Condor and Queens Blood were as good as Triple Triad to say the least. Also the FF7R battle was an evolvement for the ATB mechanics and it is wildly loved. But that's pretty much it when we talk about actual evolvements.
I think Square Enix should go back to turn based combat for Final Fantasy but ditch random encounters and do what the tales of series does have the monsters on the field so you can attack them to start the battle or avoid them if you want.
FF13-2 had the best system. They appear randomly on the map through a lightning bolt. But you still can run around them if you don't want to. Random appearances are need if you want to have some grinding sessions. Especially if you search specific monsters. It's so much more comfortable than like running into another screen just for a spawn. But running around them should also be possible if you don't want to fight.
I feel like most hardcore fans of final fantasy don’t realize that a majority of the diehard fans don’t care if a game is turn based or action based, I come from the FF10 fandom and many of my fitness who came from the SNES or PS1 days played the games because the stories and characters touched their hearts, the games being on multiplatform will help the series to expand to all audiences
Maybe you mean Xenoblade or something??? Metaphor has normal turn based combat system, nothing "hybrid" about it. Oh, you mean oneshoting weak enemies for mp and money. Nah, I disagree with you, combat itself is just turn based, field battles are just game allowing you to not deal with weak enemies and farm some mana.
I actually agree with you! 😅 I was just talking to OJ's point, where he proposed "Metaphors hybrid system" for future FF games. In reality Metaphor is fake hybrid, you're 100% right!
I asked for three points. For the mainline series to keep the FF7R system as a basic model. And creating a second mainline series based on evolving turnbased systems again or turn the classic mode of the FF7R system into a real turnbased mode. And going back to the original anthology concept. Like one game, one story, one world. No trilogies, prequels and sequels anymore. Because developments takes eternities anyway. Let's hope FF9R in the styles as leakers claim it. And they somehow always ruin established narratives with those. Merry christmas.
I'd be happy with an alternating switch between turn based and action based combat for FF. I know a lot of fans want the games to go back to turn based, but the recent games have had really fun real time battles imo. If they have two dedicated teams working on each side you could probably have a new mainline entry every 3 to 4 years. As it currently stands there's a 6 ish year gap between games so if you only like one side you're waiting the same amount of time.
Solution for Square: put your games on all platforms and less cutscenes and more gameplay. I played the demo for FFXVI and I felt like I spent too much time watch videos and occasionally hitting a button. If I wanted to watch a video then I would put in a movie!
I don't quite get the big deal about turn based combat in the FF series and I've been playing these games for 20+ years now. Most people back in the day didn't play FF for the combat. It wasn't until FFX and onward it was when the combat started to be more noteworthy. Prior to FFX it just got the job done. They were passable battle systems. People mainly played FF for the characters, the customization (job system or the materia for example), story, and/or just for the overall adventure feeling. I think evolving and improving upon what FF7R trilogy is doing with its battle system would be a good move. I wouldn't be oppose to them improving on what XVI did but if I had to pick one it would definitely be the 7R trilogy's approach. It evolved the ATB mechanics and took some concepts and ideas from XII, the XIII trilogy, and XV to create something really good. It feels like a natural evolution of what was done before.
I already said it in your livestream yesterday but I wanted to comment again and say Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year OJ🫶🏿!🎅🎄🌲 I just wanted to say Happy New Year early to you for fun even though I’ll be watching all of your livestreams and videos up to and past New Year’s haha🫶🏿!
Alright good on Square for going this route, I just did the survey myself and I made sure I got my current thoughts on the series out. Overall I'd prefer it if they go full turn based again, however should they go with the hybrid system from the remake Triliogy I'll be happy with that too.
Turn base games don't excite me tbh neither does RPG's in general. Although, I have played xenoblade recently so if there was a final fantasy game like that with brilliant graphics I'd be down for playing that.. Gotta expand that core base
I would love a FF game that is more of classic JRPG with turn based combat, focus on story, world and characters. Something like Metaphor Refantazio but with modern graphics and main character with personality.
I am filling out the survey to let them know that they need to leave those fans who constantly complain about FF not being a turn-based game anymore behind. These are just old players who don’t have the reaction time anymore to play FF7 Remake and Rebirth. It was what happened with that recent DB game where all those old gamers were complaining about it being too hard. There is no use trying to appeal to that base. It’s the Remake series creating the new fans they need to move forward with.
Honestly, the only change that I really want to see with Final Fantasy is for it to have a multi-platform release day one. I am not a fan of games being console exclusive for a year plus of time and then WAY LATER coming to PC while also not going to other consoles. If you're going to be console exclusive then just be console exclusive but if you're going to come to other places then I personally would rather that be a day one thing so that I can choose to play the game on my preferred platform immediately and not feel like I'm locked in on the one forever. Case in point, Rebirth is coming to PC where I would much rather play it but I've already got like 50 hours on the PS5 and there's no way I'm going to start over again and if for some reason I don't finish Rebirth then there's no way that I'm going to buy the third game. So really, all I want to see is games come to all the platforms that they are going to come to right from the start and then let the consumers decide where they want to play them with no ambiguity. For example, when Nintendo puts out a game on the Switch then I know it's likely only going to be on that platform if they published it so I know my option and it won't change. In Sony's case, they've started releasing their games on PC but they come out so much later that I'm starting to feel incentivised to simply stop buying them on my PS5 as the PC versions are just better and they seemingly go on sale more often on Steam (Hell, Rebirth is 30% off on Steam RIGHT NOW and the game doesn't even come out for a month).
Real time or turn based. I don’t care just make FF’s fun. Or give us a choice or make it hybrid like Trials Through Daybreak and Refantazio. Merry Christmas everyone!
100% agreed. People should stop believing these fake console mockups, naming, date reveal, rumours & speculations until Nintendo confirmes it. It's getting far too embarassing
Metaphors combat is horrible compared to FF7 Rebirth though. The action combat part of it is little more than the action combat of Dragon quest 11 where you can take a swing at a mob before the turn based battle starts. If they're under your level you instantly kill them I'm as OG as it gets with jrpgs. I played dragon warrior on nes on release day in the US. I've played most mainline dq and ff games on their release day. I wish more people would give rebirth a chance. The combat is kind of revolutionary, perfectly combining interesting action combat and the strategy of turn based. They have an option where you don't have to control movement and just focus on using abilities as atb builds up just like turn based. Th biggest gripe people seem to have is that the game is bloated. I played it all and loved it but for those that don't want to do that, much of the game is optional. You can focus on main story stuff and just enjoy the story if you want. Rebirth was amazing.
