I absolutely hate when I hit a ball inbounds and can’t find it. Just the other week I hit a beautiful drive straight in the middle of the fairway, but we had so much rain here that the ball plugged so deep in the ground that I searched everywhere and couldn’t find it. Funny thing is, I went golfing there five days after when it was all dry, and I saw the very top of that exact ball peeking up from the dirt. But on the day I golfed, I had to take a drop and re-hit. Which ended up giving me a seven on a par four. Frustrating indeed.
When it comes to lost balls it can be quite irritating when there's virtually no difference between a lost ball and one that 's almost lost - (you just got lucky and found it) but rules are in place to keep the game fair. However I disagree with some of the rules on taking relief, for example when Bob MacIntyre recently got a free drop from a sprinkler head which happened to be in the middle of thigh high rough, or when people remove their ball from behind a tree because there happened to be rabbit scrapings nearby. Doubtless everyone will disagree but I believe you should always play the ball as it lies - you put it there.
If you want relief from divots, sand your divot +1. If everyone does that (as they are supposed to), the fairway condition improves, and nobody has to deal with a pockmark. If very few people do it (current status quo) then you get tears and lamentations. Sand your divots.
Not practical for the walkers (if you’re not walking you shouldn’t be playing) to be carrying sand. Curiously it’s the golfers in carts who NEVER sand or replace their divots.
I don't think I've played a local course in the last 10+ years that has even had sand available to the players. Fixing a divot as was taught to me, was replacing the patch of grass back on the mark. Sand was something you only saw on TV.
@@yetisdeuce1315 I’ve only played short courses, full munis, public courses, & country clubs in California, Texas, Kyushu, and the Kanto areas. From 1988 I’ve seen sand not be provided ONE time (in Texas). I’ve paid green fees from $400 to $24, I’ve never seen ZERO sand provided. You should play better courses. Dont trust ME. I’m another internet rando. Go look it up. Players are EXPECTED to sand their own divots and 1 extra. Not doing that is like spitting lougies indoors and complaining about how nasty it is.
Stroke and distance rule: Agree that a factual 2 penalty strokes from hitting OOB (especially on narrow courses) is quite a severe punishment. if you hit a par 3 OOB you suddenly need a hole in 1 to make par. Divots: If the ball is actually below fairway level (as in bridging a club over the ball without it touching is possible) you should get a free drop, but just a shallow divot that's 4 months old shouldn't give relief. if the ground is so muddy or there are wheeltracks, same test, bridge your club over the ball, if the ball is actually not touching the club you can drop it in 1 clublenght. Dropping/placing In cases where you get a penalty stroke it should be place, in case of free drops it should remain drop. Otherwise you have a better chance of a good lie by aiming for a shelterhouse and placing it next to it than to actually aim correctly.
Where I grew up our local course was sparse grass, simply not enough water or money for huge maintenance - so local rule was anywhere on the fairway you had a clublength no closer to the hole to move your ball (regardless whether in a divot or not) so you had a chance of getting the ball onto some grass/weeds. I dont think it's unreasonable to have this implemented everywhere - if you want to keep it old-worldly strict for top-level events, then have at it.
I don’t know about hitting two off the tee is a good idea. It seems like it would save time. but the reality is, everyone hitting a slightly bad shot would be hitting a provisional, just in case. And then make no real attempt to look for their ball. But I absolutely agree about getting a free drop if you hit your ball into a divot, or any other imperfection in the fairway, for that matter. The fairway, just like the green, it’s supposed to be in relatively good condition. And that’s actually a rule that me and my friends play by. We allow each other to roll the ball. You should never be punished for hitting a good shot.
I'm going to keep it 100: I already take relief from bad fairway lies in divots. You shouldn't get punished for hitting a fairway. I do like the 2 off the tee proposition, though I wont actually use it unless it get implemented. I also just drop however i feel like it, sometimes i just toss it lol. The other rule I have for myself is the "a spotter would know where it is" rule where if i know it is in bounds but I cant find it, I take a drop at my best guess. Also I suck at golf and dont play any tournaments so nothing really matters
100% on board with the drop from a divot. No different than being able to tap down spike marks. You should not be penalized for actions of another golfer.
I think 3 off the tee is fair for OB if you can’t keep your golf ball on the property. HOWEVER, tree lined courses where there is no chance for finding your ball in bounds should be marked as hazards.
My favorite rule idea is PIN IS IN. Any ball which clearly strikes the pin is considered holed. Never take the pin out, speed up play, lower scores, exciting finishes, what’s not to love. ❤
I think Guy was just getting a little TOO into his character 😂. Thoroughly enjoyable and couldn’t agree more with the content. If the grass surface has obviously been disturbed below the surrounding level then it counts as a divot. In other words, the soil has been exposed.🇦🇺👍
I'm South Africa you get a club length placing on fairways at most golf courses. Which I think is fair as if you hit the Fairway you should be rewarded with a good lie.
Most comps that i play make you take a drop for 4 a metre on the fairway laterally where you think your ball ended up but can't find If you want to retee, you hit for 2 BUT you forfeit your first ball regardless of if you find it. It stops people from hitting 2 balls for giggles and taking the 2nd one if they don't like where the first one is (can't find it on purpose) This speeds up everything
I think the 2 stroke penalty should stay if someone hits an obvious OB. As in, duck hooks it right into the OB area and is clearly lost. Now, if you hit slightly off-line (or even down the middle; I’ve lost fairway balls on leaf covered courses) and it’s reasonable to assume it’s stayed in bounds, then a free “gallery drop” should be awarded. The divot rule should apply if it’s an obvious divot and not a natural imperfection. If the ball is in a divot it should be one ball’s width left or right.
Doesn't really affect us weekend golfers, but for tour players when they've putted and it's on the lip of the hole and clearly still moving, there really shouldn't be a time limit. If that ball is still moving and rolls in, that should count as the same putt.
The stroke and distance rule is unfair. But it's the rules and tough breaks like that make golf like life (which is why we love it). My course is particularly punishing for any wayward shots. I work so hard to stay in play. But, as I'm get better I feel I've earned the scores! Having said all that however, it would speed the whole thing up being able to play 2 off the tee!
It should be a “spectator drop”. Let say you hit a drive a couple yards in to some high grass. You can’t understand how you can’t find it and now you need to tee of again or you take a penalty drop. But, if there was spectators they would easily find it, as they do on the pga tour and so on. A spectator drop would let you drop the ball in the high grass where the ball landed without penalty.
Ball drop - Extend the arm out on aprox 45 deg angle to that the release is at waist hight. I'm 280 pounds 6-1 with bad knees. that's all I can take. 😆
Divot in the Farway, I would not free drop it. Just a simple Roll back of the ball out of divot no closer to the whole. maybe within 3 ", Similar to what pros do on the driving ranges. i also agree with the lost ball off the tee.. Just put another ball and hit it for 2 not 3. only 3 if you decide to drop from the "Supposed" entry point.
1st Tee shot of the day you should be able to have a breakfast ball, If not happy with it you can re-tee for no penalty, (Mulligan) Nobody wants to start the day off with a BAD tee shot.
Would love to hear Ricks take on Bob MacIntyres free drop at the Scottish open! Does he think Bobs practise swing was in fact a practise swing or does he think it was a full swing that improved his lie and he only called the ref when he missed the ball?
Currently Model Local Rule E.25 is the rule you’re thinking of. 🤓 That’s when you go to where ball is deemed lost - 2 club lengths back onto fairway for 2 shot penalty
Vlogs are doing more for the game than the professional game in my opinion especially like Rick and Peter golf bidder and golf mates Liam Harrison’s products Rule change for me would definitely be free relief from a divot agreed by your marker
He is right... what is a divot? How do you tell a divot that is one hour old vs. 3 days old. Rick says "everyone in the group should agree." Good luck with that in tournament golf.
We play for lost balls that we drop 2 club lengths on fairway for 3 off the tee or from where it was lost or goes ob. But obviously not in competition. It’s no difference to hitting a good shot from the tee for second shot but because you have been penalised it’s only fair to be on fairway hitting forth. So why risk taking a provisional off the tee and possibly losing another ball or hitting into rough and wasting time for the group behind. So I would be onboard for either rule to be an option take 2 off tee or drop on fairway near to where it was lost or went ob.
Definitely change the out of bounds. Penalty drop where it goes out. But until then😢 3 off the tee. Prefered lies instead of a drop, as, as youve said, it's already a penalty drop, why should we be penalised twice.
The RA and USGA IMO have little regard for the everyday golfer. All pro sports evolve over the years such as replay challenges, pitch clocks, etc. Some pros play numbingly slow and the use of range finders could help speed up play in all aspects. The caddies are so good and figure the yardage out any way but it is slow process at times. What would it hurt. But the they won’t allow them and why? This goes for many aspects that could make good sense… And rolling back the golf balls for distance in the future, heck NO!
Yes, Yes two off the tee. I've been griping about the stupidity of a penalty shot for being unlucky and losing the ball. And yes for OB as well. And one of others is hitting the wrong ball - have to take it back OK but why a penalty shot for being stupid?
Can we please stop with the fairway divots. If we truly look at it how many shots does it cost the average player maybe 1 per 10 rounds like more than that. You can't have play stopped every time this happens play is already slow enough for some people that would just cause 5 hours rounds to be regular. I fully agree with 2 off the tee or drop near where the ball went into the hazard area. Armatures shouldn't be penalized because we don't have spotters or a gallery to find our balls in the long grass or just off the fairway.
All over the world in the winter it's lift clean and place rules. Make it standard all the time. Doesn't affect pace at all. #1 cause of pace of play issues is golf courses running 8 minute tee times.
Divots in the fairway should be classified as GUR. And with today’s technology, NOBODY has an “incorrect” scorecard. And BTW, Rick: Tiger won’t swap with you, since he hates UA-cam…..
My league uses a six inch rule for divots in the fairway. All OB, lost balls, unplayable, etcetera are (counted) drops on the line or near last known spot. Very easy to remember, fair, and moves the game along quickly.
The knee drop is stupid and it should be 2 off the tee. I don't know about the divot one, but then I don't ever end up where the divots are on the fairways.
The 2 golf leagues that I play in league rule is you can move your ball a score card anyway you want at any time, no penalty! We aren’t getting paid to play LOL
I disagree with the 3 off the tee stance…. I like the pressure that if you stonk the ball out of bounds or 99% lost you suffer a big penalty. Makes hitting a good/great shot all the worth while. And that’s the buzz
Bryson’s main aim is to grow the game, and no one has done a better job of that since Tiger. Everyone will be wanting to be on his channel now but I’d like to see some PGA players show their personalities and do their bit to grow the game on his channel.
Free drops from divots would grind even semi-competitive rounds to a crawl determining how much of a depression makes for a divot. If you don’t like playing where it lies, just play preferred lies regardless of the weather. Keeps it simple.

BEST vid of the year , guys , so funny
If you want relief from divots, sand your divot +1. If everyone does that (as they are supposed to), the fairway condition improves, and nobody has to deal with a pockmark. If very few people do it (current status quo) then you get tears and lamentations. Sand your divots.
Not practical for the walkers (if you’re not walking you shouldn’t be playing) to be carrying sand. Curiously it’s the golfers in carts who NEVER sand or replace their divots.
@@alliejr Thats a weak excuse. I’ve got walkers on my squad. They carry sand AND… wait for it… sand their divots.
@@alliejrso many players can’t walk 6-8 miles but can definitely play with a cart. That’s a crazy take 🤪
I don't think I've played a local course in the last 10+ years that has even had sand available to the players.
Not doing that is like spitting lougies indoors and complaining about how nasty it is.
hot take on OB, just play at a local municipal where there in no OB and you just hit from 2 fairways over lol.
Very excited to see the changes the new leader of the R&A “English-approximation-of-a-hip-American-stoner” brings to the game
Guy is genuinely hilarious 😂
I like these Friday podcast clips on youtube.
I would like to see free relief from other people's fairway divots. You should never get punished for finding the fairway.
Gallery ball. We all saw it land right here....
Stroke and distance rule:
Agree that a factual 2 penalty strokes from hitting OOB (especially on narrow courses) is quite a severe punishment.
if you hit a par 3 OOB you suddenly need a hole in 1 to make par.
Divots:
If the ball is actually below fairway level (as in bridging a club over the ball without it touching is possible) you should get a free drop, but just a shallow divot that's 4 months old shouldn't give relief. if the ground is so muddy or there are wheeltracks, same test, bridge your club over the ball, if the ball is actually not touching the club you can drop it in 1 clublenght.
Dropping/placing
In cases where you get a penalty stroke it should be place, in case of free drops it should remain drop.
Otherwise you have a better chance of a good lie by aiming for a shelterhouse and placing it next to it than to actually aim correctly.
They should get rid of putting. 😡
This was gold! Love this!
Listened to this on the podcast and was howling. Came back to watch guys performance
Love this. Need it on UA-cam!
I can just imagine the chairman of the R&A offering a splif to someone he just met a minute earlier. Sounds plausible! 🤣
Guy's cali accent is killing me 😂
Please keep posting the clubhouse episodes to UA-cam.
3 from where the ball went OB is how it’s played in disc golf. It’s more fun.
Best podcast ever 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The "play as it lies" from a divot in the fairway IMO. Getting penalized for hitting the fairway(in my case, super rare), doesn't make sense.
Agreed!
2nd shot off the tee after lost ball … makes so much sense
No more loss of distance on a lost ball - I've lost balls in the middle of the fairway! Just drop and move on.
100% on board with the drop from a divot. No different than being able to tap down spike marks. You should not be penalized for actions of another golfer.
Guy was on fire today!!
All make complete sense, seriously how can we get these changed!
3 off the tee should be a rule that stays, hit a provisional if you are close to OB. Lift and place/drop out of divots I agree with
I hardly go ob anymore myself... but I whole heartedly agree with the idea of changing that rule
Most comps that i play make you take a drop for 4 a metre on the fairway laterally where you think your ball ended up but can't find
If you want to retee, you hit for 2 BUT you forfeit your first ball regardless of if you find it.
It stops people from hitting 2 balls for giggles and taking the 2nd one if they don't like where the first one is (can't find it on purpose)
This speeds up everything
I agree with the OB rule proposal - 2 off the tee or back on line with 3.
If you swap with Tiger what would you do first? Go buy a fancy thing with all your money or go right to the range and hit a shot in each of the boxes?
This one had me laughin so hard
It should be a “spectator drop”.
Let say you hit a drive a couple yards in to some high grass. You can’t understand how you can’t find it and now you need to tee of again or you take a penalty drop. But, if there was spectators they would easily find it, as they do on the pga tour and so on. A spectator drop would let you drop the ball in the high grass where the ball landed without penalty.
Guy’s got his chompers done
Ball drop - Extend the arm out on aprox 45 deg angle to that the release is at waist hight. I'm 280 pounds 6-1 with bad knees. that's all I can take. 😆
Divot in the Farway, I would not free drop it. Just a simple Roll back of the ball out of divot no closer to the whole. maybe within 3
", Similar to what pros do on the driving ranges. i also agree with the lost ball off the tee..
That’s when you go to where ball is deemed lost - 2 club lengths back onto fairway for 2 shot penalty
Agreed. The challenge is to get YOUR/MY COURSE to adopt it 🙄
Vlogs are doing more for the game than the professional game in my opinion especially like Rick and Peter golf bidder and golf mates Liam Harrison’s products Rule change for me would definitely be free relief from a divot agreed by your marker
This was a tough watch
Just play preferred at all times through the general area....solves at lot other peripheral rules related to drops
1: not old divots - new divots may be repaired before taking your shot.
What about every cart on a course carry several seed jugs to fill divots so people can grab a handful in passing carts to fill your divots
@@ProffessorJoe BINGO.
We just call it playing it up
I disagree with the 3 off the tee stance…. I like the pressure that if you stonk the ball out of bounds or 99% lost you suffer a big penalty. Makes hitting a good/great shot all the worth while. And that’s the buzz
Sure but I play a lot of courses where you can hit a damn good shot and lose a ball. Wayyyyyy too punishing.
Bryson’s main aim is to grow the game, and no one has done a better job of that since Tiger. Everyone will be wanting to be on his channel now but I’d like to see some PGA players show their personalities and do their bit to grow the game on his channel.
Can we get a petition going to get the penalty for lost shot off tee? 2:54
Free drops from divots would grind even semi-competitive rounds to a crawl determining how much of a depression makes for a divot. If you don’t like playing where it lies, just play preferred lies regardless of the weather. Keeps it simple.
