  • We all talk about the Stone Age, the Iron Age and the Bronze Age, but what era are we living in right now? People are starting to refer to us as the - far less romantic - Plastic Age. We make 288 million tonnes of plastic a year, and unlike paper, metal, glass or wood, it does not oxidise or biodegrade, instead it ends up in our oceans, making the ratio of plastic to plankton 100:1. The way to make use of The Great Pacific Garbage Patch? Bionic yarn. Co-designed by Pharrell, G-Star’s RAW for the Oceans collection is the world’s first denim line created from plastic that has been fished out of the big blue and recycled. Find out how we can pick 700,000 tonnes of plastic up off the sea floor in our documentary, made possible by G-Star, The Plastic Age.

    So, actually one of the biggest water pollutants from plastics that go directly into all water systems is the tiny particals that come from washing our synthetic fabrics. There tiny particles become food for Krill and concentrate up the food chain like that. This is a really short sighted 'solution' that just shifts the plastic slightly on its route into the food chain. The problem with plastic is thst while it foes 'break down' it doesn't decompose.

    This is not about littering. This is about tons and tons of unnecessary packaging we cover our products in. Packages that could be designed to be reusable, to be bio-degradeble etc. Honestly, as much as I can afford it, I alway buy the alternative to plastic. Reuse bags, reduce bags, seperate garbage. It's not that fucking hard.

    • @obezijana
      @obezijana 6 років тому +4

      yes, me too, but still we don't have much choice, everything is being sold in plastic. I worked recently in manufacture of vapes (electronic cigarettes), we made it right in living house of my friends, i was shocked how many wasteful plastic and carton, and print is needed to produce those tiny disposable cartridges, tons... They deliver materials from China - packages are all plastic and carton, huge amounts of it. They you put them out from those boxes, throw them away, and put them in new little boxes, packing them into many different size boxes for transportation. We thrown away tons of plastic and cartons, also empty plastic bottles from alcohol, from this from that, used in production. Then people buy it, throw away those package, then in a day or week they throw away empty cartridge. Damn. And it's only tiny home business. I can only guess how much damage large factories cause to nature. This should be changed.

    • @pandamonika

      It's not that hard to avoid plastic if you put in a tiny bit of effort and think about what you're buying.

    • @Nicole-ki7wr
      @Nicole-ki7wr 5 років тому +5

      Alternative solutions? Go to the nearest markets or grocery stores near you with your paper bags, tupperware and carrier/ backpacks and put in the food fresh, free from plastic wrapping; because I know sometimes buying bio-food or clothes is also quite expensive or perhaps you cannot grow food in your house. Simple - don't consume that much, wash your clothes more often, humans can live simple, minimal lives despite all the brainwashing ads around us. Consumerism has pushed us beyond our human nature, and marketing creates needs that are not essential to us, just by making you believe others have better things than you, it's a sick game of alienation but you don't need to play by their rules.

      And what is going to happen then? You know.. the production of plastic's isn't that harmfull to the enviroment as many people think it is.. You need less C02 in production as to producing glass or tin, no water is needed, the material is much lighter in weight so lower transportation costs and food that is packed in plastic material stays fresh for a longer period of time so lower food waste! And those are just a few of the many good quallities of plastics, so they dó have a lot of positive aspects..
      I think the bigger issue is how to eventually develop plastics in a way, that it can be broken down and recycled without the use harmfull chemicals and fossil fuel, but still keep the specific characteristics and quallity.

    • @vish2bnice
      @vish2bnice 8 років тому +2

      Yes, i agree with you. My concern is that till the time we learn to recycle plastic properly, it will be late. Marie Curie played with radium daily without knowing radiation and it killed her. We are doing the same mistake by spreading plastic everywhere.

      laura Jetten damage to the environment isn’t just about CO2 emissions. Many natural events like bushfires release CO2. Single focus on CO2 as a negative effect makes for a poor argument. Plastic is unnatural for ocean animals to ingest thereby reducing numbers dramatically, eventually causing extinction. We ingest this crap too as you saw in the documentary. It’s up to big business and overall global lifestyles to change in order to both reduce CO2 emissions AND save the environment, and thirdly our health. Purchasing locally at farmers markets, reducing your plastic footprint, and boycotting the petroleum industry will eventually create a shift.

    • @zntepicvids
      @zntepicvids 8 років тому +14

      Not at all, animal agriculture causes 51% of climate change (according to a world watch study) and all transportation combined (bus, trains, cars, boats, airplanes, etc.) only account for 13%. We need to focus on the big issues before the little ones. It's like choir, you always have to make sure you have the correct pronunciation of words but if no one in the choir is hitting the correct notes at all then what's the point? You obviously have to put most of your attention towards the correct notes before you worry about pronunciation. Also, they spoke about the ocean in the video. If we continue our fishing practices, we expect to see fishless oceans by the year 2048. If Pharrell really loved the ocean, he would be promoting vegan and vegetarian diets, it's good to focus on the little stuff but when the big stuff is so dangerous that it is going to kill us all, then I think it requires some attention.

    If you mix plastic (from the ocean or not) into denim then its further being distributed into the environment. as the fabric gets washed and worn it will break down it will be released via the washer water (to the ocean). Then when the person doesn't want it it goes to landfill - or maybe back to the ocean too. 100% cotton can be composted, or 100% plastic can be recycled, and thus not create waste, but once it is mixed with "bionic yarn" its a more difficult type of waste. The fashion industry doesn't have the answers to environmental problems, they are part of it. Mend your clothes. Buy second hand clothes, or if you need to by new then buy something that can safely be reused or broken down afterwards. That would actually help to solve the plastic problem.

How about to buy second hand clothes if you need a piece of clothes, buy less. I don’t know about G Star but this could be a greenwash... Recycling should be the last resort, first we should refuse (to buy) if cannnot then reduce then reuse, if you can’t do any of these ONLY THEN recycle. Having said that though it is hard to do so... but we can try. :)

    Not trying to be a pessimist here but recycling ocean plastics into bionic yarn is not really a solution. Since the yarn itself is made of plastic, that just means the clothes that it's being made into will not be able to biodegrade easily. And most likely will end up back in the ocean again. Then what?

      UGK17 I agree, another thing that i didnt get is; people want to recycle that plastic that is out in the oceans, to new product... For what?? So that they can get out there again? I wonder how much of bionic yarn is coming from ocean plastics, i think its a hoax they just coat polyester with cotton.

      +Rishu Yadav People gonna throw their jackets and pants away in the ocean?... Okay -_-
      Well, I feel like this: Recycled plastic may end up back in the ocean, but at a reduced rate than it is now. And the more it reduces, the more the environment can recover from the damage of today's plastic waste. That's just my opinion. What do you think? :)

    My family used to buy things in plastic all the time. I finally took over buying all the food. I don't like plastic bags so I switched to canvas...turns out it's sooo much easier to put food away because it's faster than 20 bags or double bags of grocery items. Now I want to pull out from using plastic for vegetables or all produce and do more recycling or using more glass products. I want to shop in bulk stores. The more I see the plastic the more I get mad and annoyed. It is not necessary it is not sustainable in the long run.
    Slowly I'm shifting what I'm thinking and how I'm doing things.
    Although I love shopping, I also see I cannot afford to keep this up. I still need to think and focus on doing the right thing for myself and our earth.

    The only question that remains for me is; Great that we are recycling PET into textile fibres.. But what happens to the textiles once théy are at the end of their productlifecycle? Can you recycle recycled materials? Because I believe that the only way this is going to work, is when you are able to create a circular economie!

    • @PHlophe
      @PHlophe 8 років тому +1

      Lora, but you can't recycle most of it anyway.and the shit does fall apart slowly and pollutes some more. Well if this is you in the picture, you should lead the way. DIY shampoo at home instead of the glorious l'oreal shampoo bottle. drink tap water instead of mineral water to stay slim and more importantly do not indulge into fast fashion. if you aren't following any of these then well you cannot be taken seriously

    I think that this documentary should be shared. Hopefully people's ideas will help. Just like the documentary said. I believe it also takes action or even non action, such as reconsidering purchasing something in the first place. For a few years now, I have been saying they should add something to the reduce reuse recycle methodology. And that would be to first reconsider. Reconsidering means deciding against even having it in the first place.

      The need receives donations. Creation to resolve a world mass problem takes money. Money that people can afford to buy "fashion" items, where major companies are able to donate to or raise funds for the "people in need" from low societies to finding cures for disease. It's human kind that's ruining the Earth. Not fashion. Fashion is just one of the many ways of trying to resolve this problem. But since you think otherwise, whats your great idea?

    Why are so many companies trying to make environmentalism something only the wealthy can afford??

    • @destinyrobertson5589
      @destinyrobertson5589 6 років тому +2

      Jane Daniels Part of the problem is most in society expect a “more for less” lifestyle, and environmentalism costs money. One example is it costs companies more for recycled plastic compared to virgin plastic because oil is so cheap, with less energy required. Clean manufacturing practices cost more. Look into Patagonia’s business model, expensive for a multitude of reasons.

  • @kaleilw
    @kaleilw 6 років тому

    Plastics were introduced into the mainstream not as "a matter of convenience", but as a way to reduce our reliance on other sources of packaging materials for paper, glass, etc. What we accomplished by transferring our over-use of those items (which resulted in over-harvesting of our forests and sand areas, still in effect today), to plastic is a wasteful, throwaway mentality that is not limited to our use of plastic. Instead of reducing our reliance on materials, we replaced one material with another that will persist in our environment for hundreds, thousands, or possibly millions of years to come. I have seen the very people who bemoan the use of plastic burn through single use items made of what they consider to be "alternative" materials such as paper and glass, carrying out the very throwaway mentality that they claim to be against. We must reach a point in our society where we resist the urge to overshoot our consumption, and zero out our waste.

    Still the supermarkets insist on plastic packaging plastic carrier bags plastic pop bottles... yes it has its uses but good quality paper bags solve a lot of problems in shops.. paper cartons for drinks.. the tree huggers complain.. well why dont they grow hemp everywhere and produce fantastic papers and better quality natural fibres and clothing that lasts longer than the bangladeshi cotton garments im wearing that drop to pieces after a few months. In the good old days all pop n milk came in recyclable glass bottles that stayed cold longer. And if bottles were returned you got a discount off the 'pop man' for returning bottles as they were simply washed and re used.

    This is very sad. :( Although this can be a good solution for recycling of plastic, but I would raise a question here: do we need to produce and consume that many clothing??? What is going to happen with all those clothes? Are we going to throw them away at the end of each season? I am from a central EU country. We have tones of second hand stores, and we are full with used clothes. Even the poorer people do not need them for charity...do you know what they do with it? Burn it to make their houses warm and heated!!!! So STOP THIS EXCESSIVE AND UNNNECESSARY CONSUMPTION PLEASE, AND THINK ABOUT MOTHER EARTH AND THE FUTURE OF OUR CHILDREN (including my 5 year old son :)). PLEASE!!!

    This is extremely depressing to watch. The worst part of it is that people don't feel optimistic about the future, when the change is all within us. If we keep littering and continue dumping debris into the ocean, it just creates a cycle of harm for everything and everyone. I understand that there's not much the average person can do and life isn't going to flourish within the next decade, but we should at least have everyone watch this video once and be aware of this situation. Taking baby steps and making even the slightest changes can make all the difference.
