      It should. People need to look more in detail at different systems and how they work. Even this is too superficial (he doesn't talk about the differences in repayment, for example). A good place to start is the New York Times article, "An International Final Four: Which Country Handles Student Debt Best?" It compares the systems in the US, UK, Sweden and Australia.

    I'm French and here only 2% of students in public universities take out loans, because if you're low income you get a stipend for living expenses in addition to not paying the tuition fees, which are 190€ average yearly for a bachelor's degree.
    EDIT: this is NOT to say France is wonderful in every way and everyone should do the same. France has plenty of problems, related and unrelated to the higher education system. See the replies for some examples.

    • @christophekeating21
      @christophekeating21 4 роки тому +1

      @Hodges Media I am not recommending anything, just pointing out that there are different systems and I don't know why people in the US who want "free college" (so called) focus on examples that don't do that. If you want to look at socialised public health care and education give examples that practice that for comparison. I live in France and know some of those problems first hand. When it comes to the universities, the biggest consequence is that all the costs are kept very low, which means you're not finding any French public universities near the top of international rankings. The biggest problems for farmers are both the European Common Agricultural Policy and all the regulations associated with that and the fact that the French government is years behind in paying the money to their farmers.
      I was studying in the biggest fishing port in France, which doesn't mean much nowadays as, thanks to the Common Fisheries Policy, the Norwegians use their veto to steal the fish the EU fishers aren't allowed to fish.
      As for unemployment, I don't believe that zero hour contracts (UK) or one Euro contracts (Germany) is much better than the French RSA where you are officially unemployed while doing few hours of work.
      But I'm not saying things are wonderful in France, I'm saying they should compare fitting examples. France is the country in the world with the most public spending in relation to GDP (along with Denmark) so if you want to see what countries with high levels of public spending look like, those are examples you need to look at. Denmark has a lot of differences with France, of course.
      I'm sorry that the fact I wrote too brief a comment gave the wrong impression. I've edited it to make it clearer.

    It is very common in Sweden for young newly graduated highschool students that can't find a job to join a university program just to get money. Tuition is free and you get a small grant per month, around 300USD equivalent and then you are allowed to borrow around another 300USD which you later have to pay back when you start working. Its like an sms loan, super easy way to quickly get cash. Result is that tons of people start studying something they are not interested in just for the "free" money and the partying. After a year when they have failed most of their courses they are not allowed to continue the next year, they quit and are then forced to pay back money, and they still have no job, the one year in uni is worth nothing and your life of living with debt has just started. My class at Uni had 400 ppl enrolling on day one, half were gone in a year and less than 100 finished all 4 years of our program.

      If only we could agree on what constitutes education, we'd have more productive discussions.
      Debt is money that needs to be paid back, no?

      Exactly....It's always boils down to that doesn't it? Someone wants to take another persons money using the government as a way to do it.

      According to the New York Times article, "An international final four: which country handles student debt best?"
      "In Sweden, average debt levels are similar - the equivalent of around $21,000 - even though students borrow only for living expenses (Swedish universities do not charge tuition)."

      According to the Atlantic article shown in this video, 85% of students in Sweden leave with debts, which is a lot more than in the US.
      Some countries, like France, where I live, have almost no student debt because the government also pays stipends to students for living expenses. But not only does this weigh on public spending, it also means much smaller budgets for public universities so the government can try to reduce the costs. If you look at the top universities internationally, then look at the costs for studying there you'll see what I mean.

    There is no reason why most degrees can not affordably be acquired through lectures recorded and distributed digitally to students across the country, without the need for physical classrooms, except in the case of testing, and laboratory classes. A liberal arts degree should cost you four figures, not five or six. Of course, if millions of students did not pay billions and trillions of dollars into useless degrees, there would be no academics left to spend years and decades studying and teaching useless subjects.
    And we can't have that. That's an integral part of creating Democrat voters.

    Want "free" education? Join the American military, apply for tuition assistance and earn as many degrees as you want while serving. Still in all, it is not "free", this tuition assistance is paid for by the taxpayers (while serving we still pay taxes).

    Well this one is not really delivering correct with information at all. I'm coming from Finland with a very similar education system as in Sweden so already based on that it's unlikely that there is any truth behind the claim of high student loans. This is also easy check with just 5 mins of googling. The average total depth seems to be circa 20kUsd for a graduated student ( actual school doesn't effect to this because there is no tuition ) in Sweden . In Finland a graduated student got a 8500€ student loan in average. For a graduated university student the average loan is 11500€ ( after 5 years in university). The money is spent in normal living cost like rent & food.

    Pure propaganda. I am a student in sweden yet i have 0 debt and have even gained money studying even when I was working, how is that possible according to this video? My sister gained around 150 000 kr studying because she lived at home during the years she studied and so do I therefore I have no loan and CSN provides me with around 300 dollars a month that I don't ever have to pay back. You certainly don't care about nuance at all, you forgot to mention that the rate on the loan is so incredibly low that it will be paid off by retirement and if it's not it will be paid off automaticly.

    This guy should take a good look around the countries of Western Europe. It’s plain to see that they are doing a better job of caring for the needs of most of their citizens than we do in the USA. Of course, socialized medicine isn’t free, just like America’s ridiculous amount of military spending isn’t free.

      @@WeTheInternetTV doesn't it depend on the student. Send a genius to a shite school and they will shine, send an moron to the best school in the world and no amount of money and time will make them what they are not. Gov run schools gets the average student enough to succeed of fail on their own without money being an issue. Like most gov run ventures it's far from perfect, but making it private wouldn't solve the debt problem. It would just change the payment method.

    lol what BS. Swedish students have high “debt” because there is like 0,5% interest on student loan so ofcouse we’re gonna take it, it’s the best loan you’ll ever get.
    And the reason why we don’t get return from education is because
    1: Useless education like feminist theory.
    2: Swedes care more about experience than degrees so lots of students quit on their last semester cause they already have a part-time job which often leads to full-time employment regardless if you finish the degree or not. On paper this looks like a ‘loss’ since the student doesn’t finish his education.

    Socialism best described as mediocre. But what if I want to do my best, that's right if we go socialist I cannot do that.

    • @giuliom3564
      @giuliom3564 3 роки тому +1

      Indeed it's not socialism and not mediocre. Swedish Universities are among the best in the world and are not expensive (condensing the taxes to finance it). Simply a small country normally Does not have prestigious university such Harvard or Mit. Usa is a huge country.

  • @supertotoro
    @supertotoro 4 роки тому

    We Swedes are in a weird way proud of our mediocrity. We love to call our country the country of "lagom", "lagom" being a very subjective word for in between. Like, how do you like your steak? "Lagom". How much money do you make? "Lagom". Its a good answer to most things since the answer is very subjective, neither bad or good you can use it without hurting someones feelings when they ask you for your opinion about something (hurting someones feelings is a horrible crime in Sweden). It's almost like "lagom" is better than best, because Swedes don't want to be different. We have this socialist mindset of how everyone should be equal and even pointing out someone to be better than the norm can in certain cases be insulting I feel. This extremely important part of our culture and that is why Swedes, take Pewdiepie for example, tend to thought of as very humble especially by Americans. So personally I think it is not only bad, it is good to be humble too, but this idea of "Lagom" means that most Swedes prefer to have only mediocre Schools, instead of a mix of bad, mediocre and great schools.

    • @giuliom3564
      @giuliom3564 3 роки тому

      The problem of what you say is that "mediocre" university in Sweden is better than most american universities. I think Bergh is stupid or dishonest, cause you can't compare Sweden with Usa about university, different history, culture and dimensions. A country with 10 millions can't be a superpower like a 340 million country. In USA the power matters, in Europe it's mostly the standard of living that matters most. In USA they have an anorexic welfare state also cause they spend most public money for military sector.
