Great lesson. This is maybe one of the clearest lessons I've ever watched. Thanks so much for shedding so much light on this :)
Thank you Alex. The way you taught made it very easy to understand. Much appreciated. Cheers from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
I urge more English speakers be conscious of this mood, and that they conjugate it properly more often. Great video!
I have studied English for two years. in addition I have earned a master degree. Yet, this is the first time I know about this verb mood.
I have learned a lot ! thank you so much.
No problem! I'm glad you found it useful.
Finally, with simple words.......someone explained it!!!!! Thank you!
Im Mexican and Im studying english, and I didnt understand this grammar until now, thanks Alex!
Alex, the way you teach is very clear - it has helped me a lot ! Thank you so much
what a good video I learned more here than at the academy
Same here
Love how non pretentious this teacher is unlike other Grammar teachers who have the energy of 17th century Lexicographer
Thanks! I think I have better energy in my recent videos, too.
You are a great teacher !!! hahaha ... I don't know why we teachers most of the time say "most of them" when we obviously know that, for example in this case, it is "all of them" hahahahaha, that's something that happens to me all the time , so don't be sorry for that, we understand you very well !!!! Hello from the Dominican Republic !!! 🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴 ❤️🤍💙
it really helped because i coudn't find any other vid or websites that could explain better than this!
Thanks Alex, this is a part very confuse all of English.
I would like you to expand this subject
Very good lesson, Alex. Please more of advanced grammar!
You missed an example of an auxiliary verb. "I propose you be prepared to cover everything next time" :)
Amazing explanation and very clear. I am looking forward to seeing more videos.
Thank you Alex; it's nice lesson.
Please, now I confuse subjunctive mood and conditional mood. Because the both use "IF" and "WERE" instead "WAS".
I've never heard of subjunctives before and this helped me so much for my benchmark tomorrow! Thank you so much!
Congratulations! You are a very good teacher.
Alex you are a great teacher
I love the way you teach :)
Thank you for explaining this grammar. I like this kind of videos, short, and clear.
Alex i watched all your lesson. i learnt a lot , thank a lot . do you mind making another lesson of subjunctive
You are a good teacher! This is a good lesson I've seen ever before!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Haha. Thanks for checking it out, Quan.
well explained :-) Greetings from Germany
Quite interesting issue to be taken into account!!! And as well as MasterBott01 please more of advanced grammar
I had have discussion with a friend about a sentece from a sign inside an argentinian train. It says: "Wait for the train is fully stopped". We both agree that it would be better with "wait until" or "for the train to be... stopped", although we disagree if the sentence with "is" is grammatically correct or not. What do you think?
Good video. But can I use any other synonyms of those verbs??
Hello, so 'subjunctive' or 'conjunctive are just umbrella terms for formal words which ask/reccommend/demand an action, and aren't dependant on the tense? Is that correct?
I suggest you do a video about subjunctives in the passive. Maybe rules about using a gerund instead of the verb. E.g. I suggest doing a video about subjunctives in the passive
THANKS. It is really worthy to watch.
Thanks! I'm glad you benefited from it.
Great lesson!👏🏻
Amazing lecture as always by you sir Thankyou so much
I have one question please answer I would be very thankful to you
Sentence : Thus, it is important that decision"s"(decisions) not be left to those unqualified to answer them
My doubt: y not decision follows the subjunctive mood why it is decision"s" and not decision?( Here only " not be" is following the subjunctive y decision is not following the subjunctive rule)
Please reply
Please reply and Thankyou so much
I'm so glad I found you. Thank you!! I like your classes very much :)
Thanks for this one Pal! managed to clarify a couple of doubts, Cheers!
I was looking are my papers and thinking why does this not sound right, then you said it’s used in spoken English ahhh 😭
thank you now it’s clear
great explanation.
Great video, Alex! Are parenthesis ( ) the same as brackets [ ] ? Did you write ( that ) or [ that ] ? Thanks, Alex.
Nice video, and to d point.
Your explanations are always fantastic! Thank you so much for making this available for us. I love your teaching style! It inspires me. May I suggest a grammar topic for another video? Would you mind doing a presentation on Conditionals as a follow-up to this awesome vid? I would be so grateful! Thank you very much again. =) * Send good vibes as another English teacher *
best of luck this channel
Thanks Alex!
Very nice 👍
Is saying “Only if he go too” correct then? We generally treat ifs and only ifs this way, as most people would say “Only if he goes too.” But if we use only if and if subjunctively, as in “If I were or only if I were,” shouldn’t the subjunctive (technically) follow if in my example. It does sound wrong, because “he” should normally be treated singularly, but is it technically correct that it be written that way?
Good lesson indeed.
thank u teacher. I really enjoy your teaching.
You are the best.
Very enlightening and helpful! Thank you!
Thank you man
I appreciate it!
I was very enlightening
Very well explained thank you so much!
Thank you,Alex!
I think you should also emphasize that we have to use "be" instead of "am/is/are, was/were“.
I do like your videos, please make a video about the difference between "because of and Due to" please :)
what if i put SHOULD in a sentence like "She suggested (that) I *should* leave early" is that okay? leaving the answer is really appreciated and thanks in advance :)
I love you, Alex. Thank you very-very much)
Honestly if you can say it in spoken English without it sounding weird and it makes sense to native speakers and native speakers regularly say it, is there anything wrong with it? Like does it actually matter if I say "i suggest that he come to school" or "I suggest that he comes to school"?
As Alex said in the video, speech in English is very fluctuant and is able to change as long as others understand you. But in writing grammar is very important since people don't get confused as to what others are trying to talk or explain about.
The best explanation ever!!!!
Haha. Thanks, Saul.
It's ok! You can use "should" in subjunctive like a lot of native speakers do.
hi can I ask 1 question, verb "suggest" belongs to gerund, should be "He suggest repeating the exam" ? or "He suggest that repeat the exam"?
Hi, do we use subjunctives with the verb 'require' as well?? Since it can be used in an advice form as well.
Eg:
The government requires that these forms should be submitted before the end of the financial year.
+Manav Aggarwal Yes, it is used with 'require' too, but you won't need 'should' there. You can just leave 'be' before 'submitted'.
+Harrison Owen Thanks... that helped.. :)
+Harrison Owen Why no should? Because it's formal and it's not used or because it wrong?
It's because it makes the sentence redundant. Since you are required by the government to submit the forms, the "should" would not be there.
Esta muy vien explicado el curso muy bueno para aprender ingles
Great video!!! Thank you very much Alex =)
Thanks, Raul! I'm glad you liked it.
it was v clear thank you so much Alex.
Very useful and clearly
Thanks! I’m glad you liked it.
Thanks, now I understand it
Good Job congratulaciones!!!!
Thanks, Margarita.
Does "No matter how + adjectives take the subjunctive (No matter how intelligent you are/ you be)...also do non-existent antecedents take the subjunctive in English? (There is no one who knows/know Latin)
A veces cuando uso el traductor google y traduzco algunas cosas, el traductor me dice que la palabra funciona como nombre, y como verbo, pero cuando yo boy a las listas de verbos no lo encuentro casi nunca a que se debe esto. Como por ejemplo este verbo “career” no me aparece en ninguna lista de verbo.
Ah, the elusive subjunctive. In Spanish it is a verb tense with its own form of conjugation (English speakers, despair); it is interesting to find it here, even if camouflaged.
Now, the imperfect of the subjunctive... (cackle 50/50 evil/ desperate)
Ohhh at last i feel okey !!! Thank you.
Thank you for your video:
but if I said for example: "I suggested to him to leave early" Is this incorrect grammatically?
Thanks for the explanation but I have a question.. How the subjunctive is used in the past? :(
Thank you so much 💙💙💙
You're quite welcome.
Oh my god! I always used it, but I've never known about it... Thanks!
Very useful
Muchas Gracias!
Dear prof,
someone wrote: it's impossible THAT he knowS !
I was wondering whether one has to use present subjunctive ("that he know") because of that or is considered over formaI; incorrect, old-fashioned. thank you kindly. A
I want to know the same. I just took an exam after watching this video (I am a navite spanish speaker) the question said:
I really hope that she _____ on time
And the possible answers were:
Arriving
Arrives
Arrived
Arrive
This should help me with my sats test
What you are describing is the imperative tone, NOT the subjunctive. The subjunctive relates to verbs that express what is imagined, wished or possible. "If I were a bird, I'd fly up to the mountain." Or, "Were you not such a fraud, you could teach people something."
thank you, Spanish subjunctive is a nightmare compare to subjunctive in English, I am so glad is this simple, still awkward but simple, just two changes
I'm learning spanish subjunctive too. came here to figure out how we use the subjunctive in english. Gotta love english. We keep things a lot simpler than other languages.
nice lesson.
Thanks for checking it out!
Is no more quiz?
Thanks that's great
How about in the sentence like "may God bless you"
great great. thank you.
Thank you very much sir.:-)
it was useful
May I ask a question: is the sentence " when I came there, My first feeling was as if I were frozen" correct or not in grammar?
I think it's correct.
sorry
greet you Mr: Alex
thank you so much
awesome, professor. it helped me a lot.
I'm British and I would use-
It's important that he comes on time instead of It's important he come on time.
I propose we don't got there instead of I propose we not go there. Never heard them as they are written.
Why is the correct using "I want her to be with me." instead of "I want that she be with me." ?
thank you so much!!
Thanks
You're very welcome.
woooah! woah! subjunctive... Thanks teacher for your support.
but i still don't get how the setence will make
sense.
where is the qouies?
Is it correct if I said "I recommend you to study" instead "I recommend that you study"?
No.
I recommend you study
Or: I recommend that you study.
David Thomas
It is correct with or without "that".
+snowman simon It doesn't matter in everyday speech, but 'that' technically should be used if you want to sound formal or professional.
hello
can i say:....should come.....?
thanks.
Awesome
I'm still surprised with the simple form of the verb even with third person :O
Who is going to help me when I am sick?
Is this sentence right?
Yes.
