I have the best results when I use granulation as "seasoning" vs all over the entire painting. Backgrounds are fabulous. Rocks, tree trunks.. a sky... the side of a building. Here and there vs everywhere.
Invest in some nice standard granulating single pigment paints. You can mix whatever you want.. not only the colors the brands offer but hundreds of others... plus use the pigments alone. Granulators together make "super granulators". Granulators with normal staining shades give you awesome color separation. Much better investment. Most valuable IMO: PBK11, PBR11, PB29, PG18, PG50 or PB28, PR233, PB35 or 36, Buff Titanium. There are many others but these 8 plus your normal palette will give you a ton of possibilities and these are used the most commonly to mix the convenience colors. They are made by most brands but granulation varies among them so be sure to look at some good swatches before deciding on brand for EACH pigment. In general WN professional, Daniel Smith, Roman Szmal, and Schmincke have the best granulators.
I enjoyed this in real time very much - I’m intrigued by granulating paint and yes have some unused “precious” colors to play with - thanks for this video!
I am really enjoying the granulating pallet I made. I dug into my paints and pulled out all my granulating paints and made a pallet with it. Having so much fun with it. Love when you do real time paintings. Tfs.
Be a Big Spender! Buy, in the drug or grocery store, 1 gallon each of DISTILLED and SPRING water. Experiment with each, and find out which you prefer. You'll never have nasty surprises again! My city water is heavily treated with chemicals, and I worried about what would happen to the paper down the line, so I never let anything other than distilled water touch the paper. Thanks, Lindsay, for such a great post. Thank heaven for people like you! I've bookmarked this!
💝💝💝💝💝 I love this video! Was so satisfying to see these come together in real time. I'm itching to play in my paints! I think I'm going to ratchet this over the weekend and paint along with you! Thanks Lindsey! Too much drama going on, in a few of my other artist channels. I'm glad you are always here with professionalism and an upbeat attitude. If I wanted to dwell in stress and drama, I just need to talk to one of my kids for 15 min. Lol. I'm on UA-cam to distress unwind and find inspirations! Love you tons and happy valentines day!
I love this idea of blocking off the paper and making two or three separate little paintings that go together. Really really pretty. I am definitely going to practice with some paints before attempting anything like this...LOL Love it - thank you Lindsay
Lindsay has a great playlist for beginning watercolorists. She is one of the best teachers you will find. She also has courses in her teachable school if you want additional detailed instructions & imput on your creations. (There's a link if that interests you) hope this help. Have fun in your painting!
Some of the best advice I could give if you are just starting out….limit your colors to the basics and learn how to mix your own paint…using too many premixed colors can be overwhelming and you lose the chance to know how much you can get from maybe 6-8 colors at the most….and use a paper that is tough enough to stand up to a lot of water and layers…if possible, start with real cotton paper at least 140lb …get some books and learn color theory and learn how to sketch….also when you look at your subject, really look at the contrast of darks and lights…those are a few of the things that i think are important to start with…and always remember to look at what color an object really is ….not just what we think a colors, like blue or green are…of you really look you can see what colors you need to mix to get the color of a sky, or the green of plants and grasses…sometimes they are not even blue or green…lol….good luck on your journey and remember to always focus on having fun…even when the going seems tough…you’ll get there
These are all so pretty, Lindsay! I absolutely love watching you paint. It's my favorite. I also like the idea of multiple paintings on one sheet. ❤️🖌️🎨
Fascinating. Beautiful creations - all while having fun. Really love the instructions, which opens up the world of painting to the the beginner artist, and, as well, the seasoned. Beautiful creations... I'm speechless. 😍❤❤❤
Elizabeth Here. I really liked this tutorial and how you put it together. It's inspiring and confidence boosting to see what you can do in a very short time. This is important to me because at this stage in my life I have very little time to devote to my art or crafting.
Hi, Lindsay… I loved this video! Whatever editing changes you did, it worked. I enjoyed the real time, I enjoyed hearing your commentary on what you were doing, I enjoyed watching the watercolors do their thing, I loved watching that first thirsty paintbrush do its magic - what a beautiful brush! I gained a higher appreciation for granulating watercolors after watching this as I tend to enjoy bright, fluid, soft, flowing colors and found it difficult to enjoy the rougher, earthy result of the granulation. I can see how they are necessary to achieve the end result of your beautiful work. Thanks for your extra time and energy to make this an excellent tutorial video. Have a wonderful weekend! 🙂
I enjoy this type of content. The real time painting and edited commentary are instructional and efficient. I enjoy your thinking process as you work so either way you do the editing is good for me. Thank you for another lesson well done.
So fun painting with beautiful granulating colors! I love your little paintings! I need to stop fussing. Thanks for reminder! I haven’t bought any of the new granulating colors bc I have enough for now. Really enjoyed this video. Thanks so much Lindsay!
Love these 3 pieces, so fun, you make it look so easy, the seascape is so beautiful!! Next, O.M.G, you are so funny!! "WAIT, thats not the right word, thats a tree!"...lmao omg, i couldnt stop laughing! O and Ive heard and seen that Turners Mars Violet is really granulating and beautiful too! Great video and thanks for sharing, much love💜❤🧡
WELL DONE Lindsay! 👏 I thought those paintings turned out really well. I haven't seen any of your other work so I don't know what ur style is..but I like this lose style a lot. As a child I would literally sit all night long after my parents went to bed working on an ultra realistic drawing and that was after I had sat there all day. As an adult I hate realistic paintings, i always think what was the point...just take a photo. But that said..everyone just do whatever art speaks to you. Whatever makes u happiest will produce the best Art. 😘 Have a wonderful day😘
Love the bottom right painting. Reminds me of waves splashing the camera lens! Lol! Great tutorial of loose watercolors. As always, I learned a lot about technique just by watching. Now, to put it to use!! Thanks!
This was a good reminder for making little practice paintings. I have been putting off doing a larger painting because I’m not quite sure how I wanna approach the background and I don’t want to ruin it so I’m going to make some small studies first. Thank you!
ABSOLUTELY SUPERB !! Having after three years of learning water colour thunk I have found my own style which is loose large semi-abstract landscapes, even been offered an amount for one I was just gob-smacked by. I currently use M.Graham as they don't go rock hard like the others do but not many of them granulate which I really like. Been spending some time and money on D. Smiths and Schincke and find when I use them, no way do I get the effects people seem to do on here and kind of expensive. This video and your additional written material was an absolute minefield of really useful info, tips and saving money, especially when even trying not to waste this subject can so easily for practising purposes. Please do far more on this subject.
Obsessed with GRANULATING colors! Looking at sets, I am also looking at mixing! Thanks Lindsey! You literally have taught me everything I know about paint!
Love, love, love your painting videos! So relaxing watching you paint such beautiful artwork! Would really love prints of these for happy color inspiration Lindsay!😎 So interesting about the water and paint reaction with granulation! I wonder if the minerals differ greatly in your area because the hard water here in Southern California does amazing granulation! I once used Daniel Smith Cascade green on a glass plate and left it and when I came back there was the most beautiful color separation and granulation on the plate I could’ve hung it as art! Thanks so much for all the great info on paint brands to try for granulation without the big prices! I’ve been dying to try so many of these as well as the interference and Duochrome paint but don’t have a huge budget for them!🥳🤩
Such a wonderful video and painting examples! I avoided paint that granulated when I first started in watercolors! I loved flat areas of color with no variation! I have enjoyed using granulation for natural scenes with textures of nature. I would also suggest if you want to make your own granulating paints look at how many pigments used in the paints you already have! I also suggest rough press surface papers even more than cold press paper. Lindsay you have a lovely manner and your a joy to watch and listen to in your videos! Thank you.
I really enjoyed this video. Especially the wheat field. I don't have granulating colors but I used salt and it really turned out in a unique way. I like these short tutorials.
Painting with you Lindsay! I love how you carve out the rocks in misty study. I’ve taped off 3 sections on montval paper and using my granulating colors. So fun and relaxing! Thanks for tutorial and tips!
Thoroughly enjoyed being able to watch precisely what you were doing in real time. It really helped my understanding of the process and of granulation in general. Thank you!
I really liked this tutorial. It was really helpful to me when you talk about colors that we may already have that we can use. I’m a beginner and I have limited colors. I love water color painting and these tutorials give me hope.

Wow this is a fantastic return to what I LOVE about your channel : literally jam packed with tips, tricks and real time demo of how to create amazing effects and beautiful work with what we already have on hand or how to get something similar for a low price. I just wanted to say that I followed along with this painting after watching your tutorial on using Mars black to mix your own granulating colours and my painting came out really well. Thanks for these videos. They are so much fun and I love the way you encourage play and using materials rather than getting stressed about the cost.
I do have granulation paint. One set in a kit I got for Christmas years ago and in a cheap snap lid set from Ollie's store last year. I thought it was poor quality. I have to try harder with them. I'm still learning and so glad I came across this video.
I love your style! Your watercolours are amazing, I’ve always loved watercolour paintings in my house but I’ve only watercoloured cards, and that’s stamped images!
Beautiful. You inspired me to pull my granulating colors into a palette and play around. I tried that Agave paper, it is indeed very nice. Those landscapes came out so beautiful.
Thank you, I am INSPIRED!! Love the loose and relaxed style you used. It just inspires the beginner ( me) to let go and see what happens with the paint and the paper. I have already taped off a sheet of my best paper (Arches) and am ready to have a great go at it!!!
Wonderful tutorial Lindsay , I really enjoyed your real-time take on these paintings. I really struggle getting started and now I have a great excuse to do it !!!
Loved watching you paint in real time.your sea scape with rocks looks wonderful, think it’s those pops of white very pretty. I have a few granulating paints but haven’t used for a while think today is a great day to sit down and give them a go, quite like the misty look in the sea scape wonder if I can get this look with trees well maybe a tree with mist around, yep you’ve definitely inspired me again, thanks Lindsay for sharing your art with us all.
Liked it! The dividing of the paper is a good idea as well. Liked you mentioned montval, I bought the 200gsm pad as I can run it through my printer. Tried it this week for tooth and colour pencils. Thanks.
Lindsay, those are such beautiful paintings. It's so satisfying to watch you paint, with each brush stroke the picture comes to life in front of your eyes.
Thank you for sharing your information on granulated colours I feel a bit foolish because I returned a whole set of White Nights paints . They granulated and I thought they were faulty paints. Guess I wasn’t a fan. Thank you for explaining the way to use these paints. I will check my stash of Daniel Smith’s paints and try your techniques
I have very carefully picked who I subscribe to. I did pick you as one, and enjoy listening to you. This video was wonderful. You made me feel confident to try watercolors and experiment with techniques. I always wanted to be a fashion designer and illustrator, or even an Art teacher, growing up in NY, but moving as a HS Junior to another state. I was accepted to FIT, and Pratt, a lifelong dream, but declined when mY Father said I needed to travel home each day, rather than dorm in NY. So I pursued education in the Medical field as I could stay local. I played with art, but with a busy career and kids, not as much as I’d like. Fast forward to the last years, and divorce, and re marriage and a late life child, and I am “allowed” to play. I do scrapbooks, cards, jewelry, gel printing and experiment, experiment, and experiment. I did get a second degree in Interior Design when my youngest was very little. I am sorry that I still would love to go back to school again for art, butI am old, not dead. I want to learn and play and after all these years, find out who I am. You seem to pave the way for that, this video being amazing. I hoped my son would love art as much as I do, but it’s clear at 15 that thou he has had lots of art classes, he will not be pursuing that as a career. I do enjoy love learning from him about different perspectives and techniques they do in school. I think ART is in your blood, and no matter how much blood letting you do, it stays. Passion runs deep, hugs to you as I sit in bed at 2 PM in an ice frozen Texas home…..♥️😊♥️
Wow!! I don’t know how you make such beautiful pictures especially in such a short time. This was very informative & interesting. I don’t have many watercolors but I’m interested in seeing if any granulate. Thank you!
I like real time, yet when it becomes very long (swatching paints, pencils, etc.), I appreciate speed ups. So there, covers both styles for different reasons. Thanks, Lindsay. XOXOJane
Loved this video! Have been so curious as to what granulating was! Can't wait to go thru my tubes and see what I have! Thank you Lindsey! It was a.fun video to watch! And I love the accent with the Dr martens ink!
Absolutely love these beautiful, expressive paintings. Thank you also for sharing some of your detailed knowledge about granulating paints, you are a mine of information! I have looked at some of the super-granulating paints but had already come to the conclusion that they are very costly, and not high on my list to purchase, since I already have several granulating paints - I'll just use those instead (and your tutorial has given me a few more to look at again for their granulating properties)
Wow! You just described a full range of colors we probably have in our palettes that will granulate. This is the first video Ive seen on this topic. Thank you! I actually use and love the Canson Montval watercolor paper. I just received my first order from Masha’s (ordered before I saw your video). Many pans were out of stock due to high demand but I was able to get sample dots which are great! They also included a few free samples, a nice surprize! Looking forward to using those and doing an inventory of my other paints to see what I can use.
I have the best results when I use granulation as "seasoning" vs all over the entire painting. Backgrounds are fabulous. Rocks, tree trunks.. a sky... the side of a building. Here and there vs everywhere.

Yay!
Liked it! The dividing of the paper is a good idea as well. Liked you mentioned montval, I bought the 200gsm pad as I can run it through my printer. Tried it this week for tooth and colour pencils. Thanks.
This was a good one Lindsay! Keep these coming.
Lindsay, those are such beautiful paintings. It's so satisfying to watch you paint, with each brush stroke the picture comes to life in front of your eyes.
Thanks!
Thank you for sharing your information on granulated colours
I feel a bit foolish because I returned a whole set of White Nights paints .
Thanks for watching! Education is lifelong weather it is in school or in the world. Never stop learning!
I love your landscapes, If love to see more of them!
Loved the tutorial Lindsay. Definitely inspired me to go try out my paints to see if any granulate.
Thanks!
dat masha's watercolor in the wood pallete looks so good😍
Really enjoyed this real time format. Great projects thank you
Loved this tutorial Lindsay. Very inspiring:)
Cool!
Oh wow, just beautiful!
Beautiful paintings Lindsay. TFS. Fun to watch the granulating colors. Never heard of them till your tutorials.
These are beautiful, you make it look so easy!
I love them all, particularly the seascape
Loved this style of loose painting. They all turned out great!
Love these! More please!
Really loved this! I did purchase some of the Schmincke 5ml granulating sets. Can't wait to use them. These studies were very inspiring.
Loved this tutorial and the editing!
Thanks!
the bottom right painting is very good, full of expression, top marks for all 3
