This video has been extremely helpful, this has helped me make up my mind regarding buying a train set HST. The corners cut by Hornby are less bad than slightly strange: The lights (the most strange to me) The finishes (gloss vs matt) The missing detail on the train set coach (missing GWR door stripe and coach letter) I’m very thankful for your video, even if we have slightly different views on the matter. Cheers, Owen
@@SprattyHeath Yes, well, the moulds are the original Lima model, which wasn't updated, to cut costs. The most confusing thing is how the lights work because even the Lima model only operated in the direction of travel.
Your railway room is chaotic as mine! The train set hst is a good option if you can't afford the super detailed model which is much more expensive and does not include any track or a controller. As the dummy car has pickups, there is an upgrade kit from eBay that can be used to add red lights for reverse running. This train set is a good option for beginners, but it is annoying that Hornby supply no additional coach, so you would be stuck with a 3-car set! Thanks for uploading.
Great video and i am pleased that someone has covered the HST train set model. Although its ex-Lima and it is a very basic model when compared to the exquisite premium Hornby model. To a child or those that don't care so much about accuracy like me. The train set model is enough to get a GWR HST on the cheap. The new motor and the better lights means that the train set model is better illuminated and quieter than the old Lima model and it would look fine with a rake of 5 Mk3's to the average user. But the lack of directional lighting, basic detailing and the incorrect light housing might not appeal to those that want a realistic and an accurate looking train on their layout :). Personally I would have both and I am getting this train set at the end of the month.
Lima's Valenta is really good it's just a shame Hornby didn't change the headlights to post 2009 headlights but Lima has better Valenta Headlights than Hornby's Valenta
@@speccylimone3684 As a person that grew up with Hornby and Lima HST's. The Lima tooling is the winner in the non-professional model range. I know the headlights are incorrect for this period and livery but I am pleased that Hornby have chosen to continue using the ex-Lima tooling and I hope that Hornby will make other liveries on this tooling. I have hopes that Hornby will make the 2000's First Great Western livery on this tooling that would be ideal to replace the older Hornby 1970's models in that livery that was released in around 2004.
I think both models are well detailed. The power cars of the Hornby HST, their light clusters are more like the ones with intercity branding and the forthcoming 2002 FGW green and gold/orange stripe branding
Hello, I cannot recall whether you mentioned the paint finish of both power cars. I have the cheaper version and it came in `matt` finish, but for £72 the pair plus one mk3 coach, excellent value I can accept th `matt` finish!
really useful vid, and a cracking layout! similar to mine, although mine is very slightly smaller - best try and add an estension somehow.. i think hornby would do a bomb realeasing hst in LNER on the cheap, network rail etc. thanks for posting
Just the video I was looking for. I wanted to know what the differences were to justify the price difference. They are just as expected really, the main thing putting me off the cheaper set are the ridiculous lights. How can you have headlights on going backwards? This can probably be fixed by putting a DCC decoder in but you still don't get lights in the dummy car. Cheapskates!! I do like the glossy version though, but £150 dearer than the Railroad set? Hmmmmm
I ended up buying the nice glossy version and 4 coaches. Expensive, yes, but I don't regret it. I have also splashed out on sound for the power cars and an upgrade to baby boomer speakers.
Great video thanks, just considering buying a train set R1230m set on the cheap! Very informative and great to compare both models 😊
For older livery’s the train set is acceptable, newer livery’s look ok. Great comparison.

The light clusters are actually from the wrong era, I believe they are from when the HSTs had Screaming Valentas back in the earlier years

Owen's Model Railways I Will but it too.

Nice to see the deference on the GWR Lima HST, Thumbs Up 👍 Great blog

Pre-ordered Hornby railroad intercity swallow livery train pack for £130 thanks heads up.
Thank you very much for this

The Train Set uses the Valenta Style headlight clusters, I'm just wondering... Why?

Was decoder fitting easy? Great video.
Yes. The super detail one can be a but fiddly to get the body off and be careful of the wires for cab lights.
The trainset one is very simple.
D402DDS Thank you.
Where can I buy the super detailed model?
Try local retailers or ebay. Both models show have sold out from hornby.
@@D402DDS thanks I’ll give that a try
@@D402DDS is the super detailed one part of the 1000 limited edition set?
Hi, the one show in the video is part of the hornby R3685 pack.
The special edition ones will be super detailed versions just different numbers
@@D402DDS thanks I found a good deal for one. 👍
