    Does anybody else remember when the widely accepted way to do this was with some spray painted cardboard and a piece of fishing line?

      😂 Yup!

    • @Trazynn

      @Alex Taylor search for DIY anamorphic filter, there are lots of videos with cardboard and fishing line. You basically create an oval cover and glue a fishing line across the lens.

  • @NevoGeorge
    @NevoGeorge 6 років тому +143

    That's rather what's known as an anamorphic "filter". Not an anamorphic adapter - there's sort of a big difference.

    Just want to correct you because your title is misleading, it's "Anamorfake." You're not getting a lot of the stylistic effects that traditionally come with anamorphic adapters so you're misleading people who might be new to the game. Hope that helps, love your channel! You're very good at what you do!

    • @jakeszetela6537

      Lyndon Alvarez the cool thing (in my opinion) about anamorphic is the squeeze and wide angle dof you can achieve. The flares are the least important and can be faked anyway.

    • @uwirl4338
      @uwirl4338 6 років тому

      @@jakeszetela6537 The DoF is actually simulated as well with this adapter.

    • @uwirl4338
      @uwirl4338 6 років тому +2

      As far as I know, this kind of adapter only simulates the anamorphic bokeh and flares. However I haven't been able to find a lot of information about it. Do you by any chance know what exactly are the differences in the image properties of real desqueezed anamorphic and a spherical lens with an equivalent focal lenght coupled with this adapter and cropped to an anamorphic aspect ratio?

    • @lyndonalvarez2684
      @lyndonalvarez2684 6 років тому

      Yup yup but I don't think your answer is entirely correct as far as imitating goes. Pretty much it's a stylistic choice and most people who notice are way too into filming to begin with (such as myself lol).
      Uwirlbaretsidma you might want to search tito ferrandans on UA-cam if you want to learn about anamorphic adapters. His page is what brought me up to speed in regards to understanding the basics ;)

      The flare appears slightly crooked, no?

  • @broadkent
    @broadkent 6 років тому +41

    Yeah, title's a bit misleading. That's an anamorphic *look* *filter* or *insert* . An amorphic adapter is optical.

    • @Trazynn
      @Trazynn 5 років тому

      Technically it's all optical.

    • @RodriBelascuen
      @RodriBelascuen 4 роки тому

      yes, Anamorphic lenses are way wider, this adapter only gets you the flare and look. There are some optical adapters for lenses that give the wide look which your camera should have Anamorphic Mode for it. I still cant find an optical one for the Sigma

    The lens flairs in your test aren’t balanced horizontally. They “lean” to the right. As in the right side of the flair is lower than the left. Like a seesaw where the heavier person is on the right. Can you rotate this to fix it?

    You can do the same by attaching a Fishing Thread to the front of the lens and it gives the same effect..! I do that the whole time and it costs just about 50cents...!

    • @mondobytes
      @mondobytes  6 років тому +6

      Attaching a thread only gives you the horizontal lens flare but doesn't give you the oval Bokeh that anamorphic lenses are known for. Also I like being able to just keep it on my lens and knowing it can't get damaged so that alone is worth the extra $34.50.

  • @XfarglesX
    @XfarglesX 6 років тому

    Damn, I got really excited but this has been a thing for ages and doesn't give you the real character an anamorphic lens would give you. You can make the slit out of cardboard and the fishing line you can have on your front element and color with a sharpie. Still the best budget way to get actual stretchy anamorphic is with the anamorphot adapter. Film Riot did a video on it years ago and even they were late to the party on it.

  • @vangmx
    @vangmx 6 років тому

    Yeah but the it's not really anamorphic because there is no optical squeeze during the filming. I get that the $35 adapter mimics anamorphic flares onto the video but it does not mimic the true anamorphic look because this requires the image being captured in a squeezed format for a wider aspect ratio. The classic anamorphic look is a 2x squeeze but with digital super-35 sensors, 1.3x anamorphic lenses have been released to maintain the 2.35:1 ratio. Hope you can clarify this with your viewers in the future. Perhaps you can also explain why you get these type of lens flares with anamorphic lenses.

    Important question
    Do you lose light? (Sigma + Vid)

  • @jordanwright7398
    @jordanwright7398 6 років тому

    How much light do you lose from the smaller aperture? Plenty of wide shots in your footage but nothing close focused at 35mm that would show any bokeh. Would have been interesting to see if the geometry of the bokeh had vertically elongated ovals matching the 2X stretch factor you get with true anamorphic.
    I just picked up a Kowa B&H 2X anamorphic, now if my Rectilux single focus diopter would just show up in the mail....

    • @VidAtlantic
      @VidAtlantic 6 років тому

      Hi Jordan, the CineMorph bokeh mimics the look of anamorphic lens with a strength of about 1.75x. For the back mounted version seen in the video above it mimics the looks of 1.33x or 1.5x anamorphic lens. It's a subtler look but allows for less light loss that way while still stylizing clinical looking lenses. Light loss varies with every combination (sensor, optic size, aperture speed) but it's usually just 1 stop or so of light loss.

    The problem with this sigma is that it is way too clinical. You need more optical defects to get the look. Also barel distortion helps a lot :)

    • @SimeonKolev
      @SimeonKolev 6 років тому

      Probably should work... but you better find some old glass. They have all sorts of optical deffects that create the effect :). You need distortion, aberations, softness, flares, halo, ... if you are manual focusing - no problemo. BTW my Sony FE 28 2.0 is pretty close but I can't turn off the lens corrections in the camera. It can be quite good with its wild distortion and soft edges. Also when you crop 2,35:1 helps a lot to get the look ;). I made some anamorphic filters by myself using a cutting plotter in a local advertizing agancy and it was really cheap to cut them from black cardboard in various filter sizes. They tend to ruin the AF performance sometimes but the look...

    You did notice that your flares were not horizontal and ran downhill to the right, correct? I think you should have used more care when slotting it in to you lens. It looked like there was plenty of slot left to make the adjustment. Use a flashlight and a grid overlay on your camera during setup because once you start shooting there is no way to correct it in post.
    This technique only mimics flares and oval bokeh and is very old, not a new thing. If anyone is interested in Anamorphic Shooting on a Budget check out the UA-cam channel by that name hosted by Tito Ferradans. Lots of great info on how to get real anamorphic done and many ways to anamorfake it when you need to also.

    Some IMPORTANT DETAILS:
    This is NOT AN ADPATER it is only a filter.
    You need to be carefull when using it, some cameras or speedboosters may get scratched when using it.
    The filter steps down the image for more than 1 Stop.
    On some cameras you can see the fishing line in the bokeh.
    It does NOT SQUEEZE YOUR IMAGE.
