    This is a very informative presentation of what the function labels mean. The causes of spinal cord injuries seem to follow no pattern. One person may fall or lift something and damage their spine, while another may not.

    I have c1-2 damage, I have alot of pain and limited movement due to a spinal fusion, but I am lucky to still have full use of my limbs and digits just some numbness. Good luck to all with spine injuries and for petes sake hurry up with the stem cell research!!!

    Last year I found out that I had a cyst on my C3-4 that had actually been there many many years. When I listened to this I thought of my old shoulder surgery from back in 1999. I believe and always have that that shoulder injury led to that cyst on my C 3-4 But God is good I am still walking and doing everything I need to do.

    A nurse caring for a patient with a T1 spinal cord injury would watch the patient for signs of what complication related to compromised exhalation and overall respiratory function?
    a. pleural friction
    b. pneumonia
    c. pulmonary embolism
    d. shortness of breath

      Silly to say that first seven months you'd be parilised probably flat bed no pillow.And a sever neck brace,you get to know ceiling tiles by name.No pad bed rolled by six plus nurses.Rehab is yellow brick road stuff.Then when you see your legs no muscles you wanna do something for them.You would live believe me you definatly would.

    Level is one part, completeness is another. Immediate post-injury care can influence this. I am a C-6 incomplete, and can walk as well as move all digits. My right hand is normal, as is my left leg.

    • @TheBubbacrazy
      @TheBubbacrazy 9 років тому +1

      +eoindarkside Hello, It is very surprising to me that you are able to walk with a T5 SCI. Usually, patients with a T5 injury will have some basic upper chest stability but will have no trunk movement, let alone hip flexion. This is very surprising and does sound quite odd. Even with a T10 SCI, patients will still not have full control of the trunk or hips. It is not until the SCI is below the thoracic region, (i.e. in the lumbar or sacral region) in which patients will be able to use their legs.

    • @kawirider5amh
      @kawirider5amh 6 років тому

      eoindarkside I also have a T5 injury, but have no movement or feeling below my mid chest (except for strong involuntary muscle spasms). I have had some feeling and movement return for about 2 days(2 years after the injury occurred), after continuously trying to move my legs and toes for about 7 hours (which is very mentally exhausting), but I lost it after about a day.
      It sounds like you don't have a Complete injury, which allows for some signals to travel past the point of injury. You are pretty lucky.
      Do you have control of your bowels and bladder?

      There are 7 cervcial vertebra but 8 nerves. The C1 nerve lays above the C1 vertebra and the C8 nerve lays below the C7 vertebra. The thoracic and lumbar regions are normal though with all of the corresponding nerves lying blow the vertebra. SCIENCE DUDE. WEIRD STUFF. :)

  • @leglessinoz

    I think at C7 there should be adduction and abduction of the thumb in the plane of the palm but no opposition of the thumb which requires C8 as does thumb abduction perpendicular to the palm. I have an injury at T4 but am currently experiencing some of the problems that some quads might have due a compression of the ulnar nerve.

    Don't ever say that, not even as a joke. I live with it every day and would never wish it on someone else. Rats spines aren't as complex as human spines and there has been some limited successes with some avenues of research. There are also more legal and ethical concerns apparently about experimenting on people than there are on rats.

    There isn't a 'cure' to spinal cord injury. Just luck of the draw... I've fallen while climbing about 2 metres and landed on my neck. Ambulance took me to hospital, after 8 days of numbness they got my out of bed and I've had no damage, a guy who I worked with tripped off a 3 inch curb and is now in a wheel chair, it's too dangerous to intervene into the spinal cord because more damage can be done by trying to fix the damage done by the original injury.
