Gou Miyagi is a genuine skateboarding maverick. His unique vision and the advent of the internet shot him into the big leagues of skateboarding stardom. However, the ubiquitous Gou Miyagi's overleaping fame belied the fact that he is an intensely private person. Beyond his video output and surrealist social media feed, little is known about one of the few people in skateboarding's history to change it permanently. This is Gou Miyagi, as close as you are ever likely to get.

I’m 47. Was a hardcore skater back in the day. Natas/Hensley/Mullen were my skate idols.
In my opinion Mullen/Richie Jackson are innovators. In recent years I discovered Miyagi. He’s now on my list of most influential skaters of all time.

What I find interesting about Gou is, clearly he is good and can go the normal route if he wanted, but why? There are a million guys that can 360 flip 12 stairs as a warm up trick, but in a year you wont remember them. But 20 years from now, when you dont skate any more, you will sometimes remember Gou.

It's like a merge between those one shot tricks that people film 1,000 takes for, waiting for the ping pong ball to bounced the perfect way, and skateboarding. Each clip is a monument of hard work. Very patient and excellent camera guys for sure. They're just as much GOATS as Miyagi-San in my opinion. Anyone who's skated half serious probably knows what its like to film your friend for 100 takes waiting for him to land his trick. Imagine that for weeks. Epic camera men.

I really look up to a guy that can pave his own road in a subculture and develop a legend around themselves with a complete reworking of the street skating model. Rewatching his highlights, he has some serious board control and I'm sure he's capable of being very good as a standard street skater. It's not that he's doing odd, creative tricks because he can't do flip tricks or whatever. He's just looking at a skateboard as a tool to be used in an environment through a right-brained lens. Maybe if Rodney Mullen never started skating, this is a peek into what modern street skating would look like. I see Gou's skating as much more environmental and less reliant on tricks that were made up in a driveway or backyard ramp and adapted to urban structures.
