So I know Mullen invented countless tricks and helped revolutionize skateboarding, but now you're telling me he created the modern board shape design as well? Dude is the godfather of skateboarding and seems like a great guy.
Yeah didn't know that part either
Just imagine tho Gonz was doing that on those huge old decks
He is a great guy and he's very humble even after all he's done.
Skateboarding was blessed with Mullen, wish he got everything he deserved we owe Rodney so much
What’s the weight on that bass?
Freestyle died because everyone knew who was gonna win
You're so damn right!!!
I think Rodney lost like one contest *ever* in his professional freestyle career. It was insane, lol.
And I think it was only because the judges felt sorry for the girl that entered and decided to let her win! lollol
James Radski no, he explained before it was because he was having an off day, and wasn't feeling it anymore. It was in the bones brigade doc.

People: Tony Hawk is the GOAT!
Tony Hawk: I just did the tricks that I saw Rodney invent.
True. Tony knew how to market himself and pushed the limits of vert for his time. But now Tony’s tricks are now being progressed past, but Rodney’s… haven’t. People can recreate Tony Hawk’s 900 or his great runs of vert, but nobody can recreate Mullen’s technicality. You just don’t see people doing hardflip dark side or hardflip Casper with tricks out. His overall impact on skating as a whole was unprecedented and will likely never be passed.
@@unknown_individual7050 Rodney Mullen is a real life version of a Pro Skater character.
@@unknown_individual7050 jonny giger does haha
@@gicfjd1919 giger himself has said he will never be able to perform Mullens maneuvers as well or consistently ever. He understands that mullen created these tricks and perfected them far past gigers level

The term "one of a kind" is overused. Rodney Mullen, however, is TRULY one of a kind. What a unique skater.
After 20 years, I'm getting back into skateboarding and never knew this story. This is awesome.
People that are so good they reinvent the sport and equipment used. That's a one of kind. Most people take things for granted. He didn't he took it and ran with it. I'm not even a skater but because of THPS I knew as much as most skaters did. So I could talk the lingo. Rodney mullen was everybodies favorite skater.
the word is singular! thats what people should say. hes destroyed skating . go bigger kiddos!
They’ll never be another one like him
John Stover I never knew for the longest time he made the modern board and truck design
Its like one human being responsible for teaching everyone else how to walk.

More like the first caveman to start a fire .
Vert skating pretty agg bro
How does a microwave work again?
jason lee and natas taught him how to skate in the street instead flatground so it was a collab when he brought certain flip tricks down stairs and more
Nas once said "learn EVERYTHING THERE IS TO LEARN about the art, and then forget everything about it, and innovate." Rodney is the living definition of that phrase.

@@Corn0nTheCobb it's the reason he changed his life, you can find an interview where he explains it. he wasn't happy being a mean drill instructor.
I remember the first Tony Hawk game where they had videos of the pros. I unlocked Rodney's videos and it blew my mind. I was so confused why everyone like Hawk more then him. He was better than everyone in the videos. Dude's a legend.
I think it honestly had to do with no one in that generation really knew about Rodney. I grew knowing about Tony in the 90s but not Mullen. Tony was the Rodney of his generation to some(a lot) extent. But always gave props to Rodney.
Rodney Mullen didn't appear in the first game.
same!
Yes! Exactly the same! I remember opening the game just to watch Rodney Mullen's part. Blew my mind.
Tony was vert skater and most people who weren't fans of the sport actually enjoyed watching a man fly high on those halfpipes but real fans of skateboarding knew how how great Mullen was and how he change skating
Rodney Mullen has always been The GOAT of all times.
THE SAVANT OF SKATEBOARDING!🙏
Greatest skateboarder of all time, without contest.
The stuff in this video would still win contests today.
It's funny..because back then. .freestyle was almost the equivalent of scootering. I'd argue For Mark Gonzales and many other skaters...the beauty of skating is that anybody can change the game and contribute.
Nuffaction One thing is sucking on a scooter, but if you know what you're doing I bet some skaters would respect it. Looking at rodney I bet a lot of skaters today would get their minds blown seeing what he can do.
@Arthur Menges street skater I'll give you..but that's it. When I was a kid in the early 80s watching Mullen was the equivalent of sitting back and watching scooterists..nobody cared.
@Arthur Menges Why do modern street skaters judge Rodney Mullen for not doing street skating (ie "he's just a freestyler") when in this video it says he switched it up to street skating after being talked into it by Mike Ternasky? As well, isn't those Round series of duel-skating videos street skating? Confused. This video seems to be saying one thing, but your comments about what modern street skaters think seems to be something else.
I used to watch this documentary all the time when I was a kid eating pop tarts. Now I'm in college watching it still eating pop tarts.

Cracks me up, in most of Mullens vids, his wheels are tiny! 😂😂 He's thrashed them so hard they're worn down to like 35mm, he could have a thousand sets but ye can't beat a set broken in! 😂😂👍👌✌️✌
what kind?
Rodney is singlehandedly responsible for getting SOOOO many kids kicked out of parks, closed schools, empty courthouse grounds, parking garages....
We appreciate your inspiration, Rodney.
Rodney was the main reason I got into skating. I hate the fact that all modern skaters hate Mullen for his style. I had skater friends that hated Mullen and I was like "how do you hate someone who created the tricks you're good at or revolutionized skating to what it is today?" This guy created the flat ground ollie, many modern tricks, and the modern board. At least these skaters should show some respect. Mullen is my idol
gomezchris16 people hate greatness. Trust me, I have no friends.
gomezchris16 there just haters when it comes to true Skaters we all love Mullen and actually love the sport
How does someone hate him? He's like the Bob Ross of skating
They are just being punks which is what skating is all about. Deep down they got respect, just ain’t showing it
Because he already invented all the tricks pro skaters these days try to learn before they were born. Man is a legend. What Jimmy Hendrix was to a guitar Rodney is to a skateboard. Jimmy didn't have to invent his instrument tho.
His way of talking is so humble, gentle and kind. I love that about him
He kinda sounds like a sociopath but i guess that makes sense since he never talked much

Every time I think about Rodney I'm so glad that we have all this footage of what he did in the early days. He directly influenced so much of what we see skaters do today.
Yeah, this video is over ten years old, and all the tricks he's doing are still heavy as hell. Dude is insane
THEY SHOULD MAKE A MOVIE ABOUT THIS DUDE, ALREADY.
100%
The only skater that nonskaters know is Tony Hawk, so they’d probably be more likely to make a movie about him first.
I dont think anyone on the planet would be able to play him. Theyd have to fake all the skateboarding scenes because he was doing things as a child no one is doing today.

Rather Einstein is the Mullen of physics
Einstein was an incestuous creep that did very little for the modern world.
Thats an understatement Physic works for Rodney Mullen not the otherway around.
more like the big bang
What kind of a dad can witness that much talent in their kids and do everything in their power to get them to stop? Blows my mind.
Maybe it was reverse psychology? It made him push even harder and his dad probably knew that.
Lots of parents are like that
Back then skateboarding wasn't that popular and nobody had really pushed the boundaries on what could be done on a skateboard until Rodney came along. He basically lead the charge on not only freestyle skateboarding but making a living off of being a professional skateboarder as well.
It was like saying "I'm gonna play video games for a living" back then. It just wasn't a thing.
Parents back then especially weren't big on supporting their kids. People from that generation think having kids just means making little copies of yourself, and they didnt understand or care about their children having their own personalities, hopes, dreams etc.
So in order to influence my kid to become succesfull, disencourage, ignore and dismiss the kids passion as much as possible, got it!
:)
To an extent yes because young ppl gravitate towards stuff they can’t do
tbh they'd probably be better off than if you coddle them. Hell, they'd probably be better off than if you just left them as well.

zeroing in on the childs strengths is the best way to find their area of success, if he excels at something that is achievable and realistic then let he/she go for it. his dad was bein a bit of a knob but it helped to shape rodney so what do i know

Jacob L'Esperance he did. Watch bones brigade
@thelegend27 2.0 imagine where skateboarding would be now without Rodney. Would al the tricks he created be created without him? Perhaps the obvious ones. Ollie, kick/heelflip shoveit.
I think without him skateboarding wouldn't be where it is today, still be doing basic tricks or just recently seeing the first impossible or something.
His dad's continued disapproval was a key factor in driving Rodney to pursue his dreams. If the Dad gave way too soon, Rodney could still have done the same stuff and maybe even better OR Rodney could've been complacent and content right away thus no more innovation or progression.
man, I had chills all over my body when watching this. lovely documentary, Rodney is a genius.
There are two types of people in this world. 1. People who wish they were Rodney Mullen. 2. Rodney Mullen.

I'd rather be Nyjah honestly. He's so rich and good looking. What an asshole.
It's not only that his tricks are insane, but he seems to float effortlessly through the air, which sets him apart from a lot of the other greats. Even many of the best street skaters still aren't nearly as smooth.
yeah people used to say they didn't like his style, i think his style is so sick.
I love it, “I just focus and you get good really fast” words a goat says
Not only was he a great skater, he was really down to earth and noble. I met him once in the late 80s at the Lakewood Mall in So Cal. He happened to be there when I went to buy my first Swatch. He was so friendly and attentive to all of his fans. Good dude
Roberto Terriquez dude I was there , when he performed his freestyle in the mall parking lot I got my tony hawk board signed by him that day, cleaning out the garage at my moms house I found that board! So cool to show my son his videos then to show him my board with mullens signature earned me some sweet dad points
Watching some of these skateboard videos I'm getting a huge wave of nostalgia. I used to watch all these videos back in the late 90s. I remember trying so hard to learn how to ollie and then one day finally getting it. It was so awesome
When Rodney enters a contest, he takes first, second, and third.
i was 13 when i watched Rodney in 1995, had an ateam deck and was just blown away. thanks rodney, u are a hero, to so many people, whatever your dad thinks dude ;)
I grew up with this shit , always was and will be my favorite skater, still today 25 years later i keep talking about the videos he was in.
You remember questionable?
Couldn't agree more! Certain video parts always got me pumped, not just videos, a coue parts that got me stoked to go trash was Tom penny's menikmati and flips sorry vid parts, also tosh Townsend in sight unseen and emerica this is skateboarding, those parts still stuck with me even after 30 years old as of now
Rodney's father almost ruined it all
+Mike Hunt If it weren't for his father, he would've been just like every other skater. He is a part of what shaped him to be so different, albeit not very supportive
+John Bush or maybe he knew that the opposite would happen...
BigKing Bud like Remy Lacroix
Wilson ...lol, exibhit A LMAO!
A strict father clearly but......He did bought his first skateboard, made him a shed where he could practice at all hours. Remember he was a dentist in a time when no one made money from skate yeah he was't Tony's father completely submerged in the skating world but nonetheless quiet supportive for the era and kind of person he (is/was) as described by his son
As a late 80's kid, who was there for at the dawn of the Tony Hawk games that REALLY blew skateboarding up all over the world, I don't think there was a single kid I knew who would've named anyone other than Mullen as their favorite skateboarder. Obviously we drew inspiration and style from everything in those games, but Mullen was the guy everyone talked about. He was it, head and shoulders above everyone else. A true, unmatched legend. And seemingly a great guy to boot.
thanks mr mullen for creating the my favorite sport. unfortunately my ankle broke and i can no longer skateboard. now I build custom boards from my garage and try to help teach kids.
@Jamey Craig big ups.. I've been screwing around a bit on my board. Im just an ankle roll from destroying this damn ankle so it what is.
I actually had a pretty cool thing happen. A few guys noticed my boards and invested some money into helping me get a small shop going this summer... We're just planning it out for now and this covid shit kind of set us back a little but nothing we arent overcoming.
Just chill for a year no need to quit
@@sad_is_fiction nah.. My ankle is fucked. Trust me. I wish it wasn't but it is.
Daewon broke his ankle super bad and can still get it! I shattered my right great toe sesamoid and 1st metatarsal and cracked my left great toe sesamoid and I still skate! It took me about 2 years to recover but I didn’t give up! Don’t give up bro
I feel you... I had to quit about 15 years ago because I snapped my ankle ligaments that never properly healed because I'm a hemophiliac. And still whenever I'm somewhere I haven't been before I'm scouting for spots and on holidays I usually try to find the local scene to hang out, watch and chat... if I'm feeling bold enough I'll pop a shuv-it, which is a pretty safe trick that I can still pull off. Quarantine has me reminiscing about owning a board though... I think I might just buy one just to ride around and see what's still possible.
Holy shit I always knew Mullen was the absolute king, but I had noooo idea he came up with so many of the fundamentals of street skating 🤯
i only hope Rodneys farther realizes what an amazing person Rodney is.....
He wouldn't have done what he's done without his dad's constraints.
It’s not hard to realize that he is a genius and did what he was destined to do. And it’s a beautiful thing.
I could talk all day about Rodney Mullen. Firstly, can't believe the man who invented majority of skateboard tricks is alive today.
But the man IS relatable, and yet one of a kind at the same time. He really is special.
I just looked up the definition of Autism: A serious developmental disorder that impairs the ability to communicate and interact.
If you have seen Rodney Mullen's Ted Talks, or his relatable and unique way of communicating in general, I would disagree that he has an impairment of communication.
On the contrary, he makes more sense and is more captivating than many people I've spoken to. I then had to ask myself if that makes me autistic, and since neither I nor Rodney have ever been professionally diagnosed with that impairment, I get to the conclusion that he is just different.
By being different and obsessed with skateboarding he moved into a realm of skill the majority wasn't willing to dedicate themselves to. It changes you to be possessed by a calling. Just because he's overwhelmingly sincere, excited and takes his time choosing his words, doesn't make him mentally impaired.
It makes him cool.
Eh, whether he's autistic or not, defining people by whether they have condition or not kinda sucks.
I'm sorry but that is just a one sentence definition for a condition that (if you've known people with or have autism) manifests in totally different ways depending on the individual. Whether or not Rodney is autistic, 12 words isn't enough to describe how varied and complex this way of thinking is.
I hate all these keyboard doctors diagnosing someone with a condition when they don't even know the person in real life.
He was alone his early life, he loved skating and his dad drove him even more to prove he could do it and do it well. It's all here just watch the video. You would never tell this man he's impaired, he's gifted but you can't claim autism is the reason why.. That's a cop out demeaning all the hard work and passion he's contributed.
I LIKE HOW YOU ARE ALL TRYING TO DIAGNOSE HIM WITH SOMETHING. MAYBE HE'S JUST A PLAIN OLD GENIUS THAT FOUND HIS CALLING IN SKATEBOARDING
Still watchin in 2019! Mullin for President!
Daewon and Mullen are so sick !!!!!!!
Beat ya , I'm watching in 2021
I find Rodney so inspirational, not just with skating but with life in general.

Mullen 23 years after still amazes, like the first time you see him from the vhs tapes you watched over and over and over again.
I'm almost 40 and I'm still watching this and getting amped!
I remember playing the Tony Hawk games and being like yeah this game is fun, but these tricks are so unrealistic no one could actually do this. Then watching Rodney Mullen videos of him actually doing the tricks and my jaw just dropping.
I respect all skate people but Mullen should never be forgotten.

20:48 I love the irony that Rodney Mullen's style of skating is based solely on creativity, yet he can break it down to a science.
+Deka Red physics, my friend, physics...you´ll always end up there somehow trying to explain something...but Rodney is more than that...it´s art...the package I mean...and that is why my jaw still keeps droping after having seen all those tricks for like one hundred times...if skating where to be music, then rodney is THE uberact of the millenium
The way he described how he learns tricks is the same way I learn jokes. It's an original creation, but it also has to be learned. There's a key point in a trick or a joke that isn't visible to the crowd or viewing public, but in the mind of the creator, it's the catalyst for the entire thing. He mentioned he knows that when he gets to X point, his eyes are looking here and his back shoulder needs to be there and the rest is autopilot. It's sort of a catalytic reference point, and his tricks and combinations of tricks are him going from one of those points to the next to the next. Creativity is a science. Flair is making it look like there's no science to it. Watch the Anderson Cooper Eminem interview and listen to how Eminem describes how he writes a song. It's the same thing.
Physics might appear non-creative, but to actually find the right theory required great intuition. You could regard all the wrong theories as creative. I think science can be a great source of inspiration. I don’t think it is possible for a great mind like Rodney to not be into Physics as well.
fuck, I left a comment and its like the same time stamp.
Deka Red it is not ironic, it's just true understanding of what you're doing
The first clips of him in the cement area and the big bowl behind him when he was asked what place he got, was Kona in Jacksonville. I skated there a lot as a kid! Wow how that place has changed

Thank you so much for posting this.
rodney's explanation of focus on one thing, put the rest on auto pilot is what happens when you advance super far in the martial arts. this is how we dissect things in the martial method. cut it all down into chunks, perfect each chunk, destroy the opposition. rodney was just the first person to bring the method to skating. still my all time fav skater. rodney is the goat.
He did tricks in real life only normal ppl could mostly just do in video games lol. His ability to put tricks together is something ive never seen from anyone else.
"You did what over the weekend Daewon? (Oh, a variation of those tricks I INVENTED!) I'm dead my career's over" lol
I teared up. Amazing inspiring story
And this is why I was always Mullen in Tony Hawk skateboarding games.
One of my favorite parts of this story is how his dad didn't want to become a skateboarder in multiple points of his life. Saw no future in it. Then he goes out, creates the future, pioneers the sport, revolutionizes the actual manufacturing of skateboards, and is literally the one of the sole drivers of the entire lifestyle. I love to skateboard, but Rodney was born to do what he did.
This is how THPS with cheats looks like.
The way he processes those thoughts is very admirable
Hands down.. By far the best skilled skater ever. A true legend. Much respect for Rodney.

@@kielgraves8104 radcow, seems like Rodney's dad was a bit if a lamo, and if skaters get stuck behind a desk then they arent and never would have been as talented as Mullen. If they had the potential to be as good as Mullen, theyd be winning competitions or making money of skating somehow
OKK ... Rodney Mullen's humbleness ... just kills me! Thank You for making of me a better person.
This guy just uses cheat codes, it's so unfair.
W
when I saw him do a flatland Airwalk, and then merged it with my memory of it being a Tony Hawk Special, that was only capable of vert air time...
up up down down left right left right b a
F#$%ing doing L for levitate on the board. Rodney stop using the gameshark in real life!
He is a cheat code, in one of the tony hawks if i remember right, to get perfect manuals the password is mullenpower
I guess 504 people didn't realize their phone was upside down when liking the video. That's embarassing...
They must all be Australian.
Down under, upside down.
Or they must've thought it was opposite day or somethin.. like that... haaa.
Listening to Rodney talk brings quite a bit of emotion... im vehclempt over here!
Dude!! The reels from the 90s are so sick!! Dark slides under flips. What ever happened to those
Only one person in a billion was able to do them 🙂
it's all in the toe/ankle flick

Dark slides are so ridiculously dope
Still to this day cant believe I got to not only meet this absolute mad scientist, but got to watch him in his element. It was magical watching him just even think about being on a board, not even actually skate.
Man this was awesome, thanks for uploading man. So much nostalgia.
Forever my favorite skateboarder
This dude is the best. So inspirational. I watched his best of so many times growing up I found myself calling the tricks before they happened while watching this. And they all still hold up to this day. Timeless!
I love skate music. It's great for balancing too!
Invented the Ollie nuff said. I remember watching plan b questionable so many times. Mullen also introduced me to Jim Croce lol.
Jim Croce is my 2nd greatest musician of all time just barely behind Bob Marley. Rodney is the greatest skater of all time ahead of Tony.
This level of artistic refinement was only possible because rodney ignored modern trends, and stuck with his art despite a change of times and taste.
this is a person who spent close to every waking moment of their existence innovating within the art, creating a seemingly endless fountain of resources and techniques that would become a permanent part of the history of skateboarding for generations to come ..
