The Western Ghats look exceptionally beautiful and GREEN in the peak monsoon seasons. Though monsoon season is the best season to do treks in the Sahyadris, the heavy downpour completely diminishes the option of doing tough treks which include technical skills like rock climbing, rappelling, belaying, slacklining, pitch climbing, free climbing et al.
However, the Post-monsoon and Winter season bring good news for hardcore trekkers as the water recedes, the sun shines bright and it makes the holds on the rocks highly reliable.
The Alang Madan Kulang trek abbreviated as AMK trek is considered one of the toughest treks in the Western Ghats. It is counted in lines with the Lingana rock face climb.
I (Manav) went along with two of my friends named Sagnik Sarkar and Saiyami Takale to do the AMK trek in the first week of December 2017.
We subscribed to public transport all along & the route was;
Pune - Kalyan - Igatpuri - Ghoti - Ambewari - AMK Trek - Ambewari - Igatpuri - Kalyan - Pune
There are 2 base villages for the AMK trek (Ambewadi, Kulangwadi) but we chose Ambewari because of the following reasons;
a) We wanted to do the trek as per the abbreviation i.e., we wanted to keep the order intact Alang - Madan - Kulang
b) Ambewadi derives its name from the mangoes (Aam) grown there. So I was in particular very curious to talk with the farmers about the history behind the name in depth.
c) There village provides a fascinating view of all the three forts Alang, Madan and Kulang from the homestay itself. We sat outside in moonlight and admired the beauty of the three forts and felt really connected before the start of the trek.
Local Guide information:
Name - Ganpat Morey
Contact - 8055695521
The local guide(s) already have all the equipments required for the climb;
Static rope (60 m), Carabiners (Screw type), Descender, Mittons, Seat Harness, Helmet, Rope Sling (Extra safety)
The second part of the video starts after we started moving in the direction of the Madan fort from the cave near the premises of the Alang fort.
Note: One must collect firewood to cook food before negotiating the staircase section of the Madan fort. (And please don't forget to carry matchstick in your ration)
After a hike of almost half hour one can reach the staircase section of Madangad. It takes around 15 minutes to reach to the rock face (40-50ft) of Madan. One needs to be very careful while lead climbing the Madan rock face because the ledge from where the rock face starts is narrow and has a sheer drop in the valley thus leaving very few options for the belayer to arrest the fall.
Once you negotiate the rock face, the trail will lead you back in the direction of Alang fort and you'll get one of the best views of the whole structure of the Alang fort formation.
Note: Try reaching on top of Madan a couple of hours before sunset. Madan is at a higher altitute as compared to Alang and thus provides a mesmerising view of the Alang fort before sunset when the whole area is lit in the shades of orange and yellow.
The cave on Madan is very clean and can accommodate 15-20 people. The water cisterns are small but clean to use. But we request you to NOT to pollute the water since it is scarce.
We cooked our food and witnessed one of the best sunsets on top of Madan.
Day 2 of the trek started by witnessing a beautiful sunrise and after breakfast when we decided to descend from Madan, we experienced something really wonderful. One of the water cistern had numerous guppy/rainbow fishes in it. We have described the reason behind their presence on top of a fort in the video.
Finally, after taking some underwater shots using GoPro Hero 5 Black we started our descend from Madan at around 11:30 am. A quick descend of around 2 hours will bring you back to the foothills of Madan.
Now the longest section of the trek would start. The hike from Madan to Kulang is around 3 hours long. Enroute you'll see the other side of the valley and one can easily point out Ratangarh, Sandhan valley and other treks and trails of Nashik.
Soon after crossing alongside few pinnacles we reached to the foothill of the Kualng fort. The hike to the top of Kulang fort is NOT at all technical and the whole way is a steep ascend through stairs.
It took us around half hour to reach on top of Kulang. The whole 360 degree view of the huge valley was worth the effort. The trek reached it ending scenes when we hiked to the last end of the ridge of the Kulang fort.
After that we descended in the valley and made our way back to the Ambewadi village at around 6 pm.

+Kunal Sharma Yeah the experience on the whole was great and our favourite part was also climbing up the rock faces of Alang and Madan 🗿

+Rithik Yadav Thanks brother 👍 Do tag along for future videos. It will be fun 🤸
without Mitten , top belay...👍 Hope to see you guys in uttarakhand soon
Too much reliance on local support led to climbing without mittons and helmet. Lesson learnt. Will definitely prioritize equipment in future videos. I'm glad you pointed it out 🤘
You're the best... Love from TN...😍
Thank you so much for all the love and support to the channel. 🙂 Wish to do a hike in TN someday 🙈
@@AskManavTV haha yep Ooty is waiting for you...😍❤

Bahi I really loved the food part after a long run on fruits 😝
+Anurag Yadav So true 😂😂 This time it was healthy and wholesome 😎
do you recommend this trek to whom don't have basic mountaineering skills like belay etc
Go with a local guy who is technically sound then you can learn belay and other things. Please make sure that safety is your utmost priority.
आपने दो दिन पाणी कहा से पिया...
Madan fort pe paani hai .. dusre din hum wapas aagye they gaun me

Thank you
Wait do we have to carry our own ropes and carabiners and other stuff?
No, the locals will have them. They help you do the trek, they do the installation of you are new to climbing.
I am surprised how easily the local person climbed and fixed the ropes
True. Practice makes perfect
Verry nicy vidyo

Nice video. But don’t put your feet into the water cistern. The water is drinkable. Other trekkers used that water for drinking purpose. So don’t spoil the water.
Thanks a lot for the concern Mayur. However, I just want to share that the pool I kept my feet in was not filled with potable water. I agree that trekkers use the water present on top of Madan fort to drink but that is from a 'small water tank' which is present adjacent to this relatively bigger tank. I make sure that I am not contaminating the place just for a good shot :)
And thanks a lot for showing concern brother :)
Ok. Then it’s ok. I know you are a responsible trekker. And your video is very nice. All the best
Thanks buddy :) Wish to see you around :)
Thanks buddy :) Wish to see you around :)
Can we go here during monsoon?
No
Loved your video..But didn't like that you have dipped your feet in water tanks..Trekkers use this water to drink and to cook food. Please try to avoid.
+Pranav Mayekar I'm glad that you are concerned about the environment. 🙏 Further, I would like to share the information that the water tank in which I dipped my feet was not clean and the water was neither potable nor could be used for washing utensils. There is only one water tank (among the total 3-4 of them) which contains potable water which can be used for drinking and cooking purposes. Therefore, our activity had no negative or harmful impact on the water bodies in the fort complex. 😊
Continue to keep it real mate \m/ Enjoyed every bit of it
+saket Thanks for your support man 🤘 And yes the Raw vibe will stay forever 🕺👍
EXACTLY WHICH CAMERA ARE YOU USING TO CAPTURE VIDEOS.
GoPro Hero 5 Black
Thanks
Nice video , you should have made fish curry instead of gobi masala. 😃
+Pranav Kumar 😂😂 Guppies were so wonderful that once you see them you'll turn vegan for life 👍
How did you remove the rope when you reached bottom of that rock patch?
The local person was the last one to come down and he removed the rope first and came down. Since he has been climbing on the rock face since many years he was well versed with all the holds and thus came down without any support.
Oh man that's too risky( i understand it's daily stuff for them but still it took my breath off for seconds when i imagined) coz u mentioned rock patch height around 40-50ft so it's like one wrong step n you are history 😐
Hats off to that local guy
N yes thank you for uploading such an amazing video .this was my first from ur list 😁 subscribed even before completing the video
Thanks a lot brother. I'm glad u liked the content. :)
Yes, hats off to the local guy. These are real mountaineers. The trek would have not been possible without his skillset.
Trek cost?
1500-2000/- per head
Scary scary scary
It was Fun.
🙌🙌👨❤️👨
+BasavRaj Sonar Thanks 🕺
Very Nice... I want to join you for your upcoming adventure activities... Can you take me too???
+Rajat Dhane Leave a shoutout at creedaz@gmail.com with your name and contact details. And yes I would like to tag along with you buddy. Wish to see you soon 🤘 #stayawesome
I had watched these videos a year back and subscribed but didn't leave a comment back then. Back here to make amends after completing AMK trek with Ganpat dada this past weekend :)
Your video and the accompanying information were a great help in planning this long awaited escapade of mine. Great work as always! Cheers & looking forward to you climbing in the Sahyadris soon :)
P.S I have added a link to your channel in the 'Useful links' post on my blog :)
nomadosauras.wordpress.com/2016/08/03/useful-links/
Wow .. your comment made my day. And yes, Ganpat dada was really a great personality. I learnt so many things from him. :) And I'm really happy knowing that the content could help you plan your trek well. And yes, I'll be doing treks again in the Sahyadris in monsoons. :)
You can go to this place 100 times and for me going there once is gonna be same as those 100 times 🤣
+Vinod Shivdasani 😂😂😂😂 Still it is going to be worth it bro 😎 #aajao
Creedaz sure bro... I know its gonna be worth it since it doesn't have too much stairs 😉🤣
+Vinod Shivdasani 😂😂😂 The biggest enemy 😂😂
Hello Hind
👍
Where do you guys poop?? Silly question yet most important 😂. Do answer!
We answer the Nature calls in the open. Water is available on top. But one request from everyone, please do not throw palstic bottles all across the place. Keep it clean.
@@AskManavTV thank you
