I agree, I love the fact that he gave us time to enjoy each note. I don't know why some interpreters just want to play it faster. I absolutely loved the tempo❤.
There's one choice some people said I would eventually regret and has made me a really happy man still to this day. Deciding to keep studying the harpsichord even when I was given the chance to switch to piano
This harpsichord that has one of the most beautiful tones I ever heard. Add it to Alard's beautiful performance and to the sensible recording and post-production, and you get this masterpiece. Thanks for making it happen!
This is extraordinary on so many levels-- (1) a knack-sack favorite composition from JSB; (2) a technically adept, fluid, attractive, performer; (3) a period-correct 3-manual harpsicord of exceptional beauty and craftsmanship, (4) a beautiful grand manor music room in full appointment of fine art, furnishings, and a collection of musical instruments including a chamber organ and a burning fireplace. Total candy for the eyes and the ears. Such a joy to see and hear. Thank you.
The musical instruments have developed since then, but it doesn't mean that we have to play old music with them. There were couple of artists who tried to improve the works of the old masters by using electronic keyboards, sequencers, drum machines... Isao Tomita and Wendy Carlos were fairly known few years ago.
Nooooo😅 not much much beautiful. Bach has also known the new Cristofori's piano and has used it too. And he didn't such great instruments that should later come like Steiway, Bösendorfer and so on.... there are much better skala and sound possibilities and Bach would be pleasured from that long singing tone and pedal😊
Absolutely breathtaking. The harpsichord is the most beautiful instrument in the world. I wish so much that I could just touch one, it's a crying shame that it 'fell out of style' in favor of the piano at some point. Not in my book, though!
I just went and saw one played up close and they let you go up onto the stage and look at it up close as they were tuning it. nothing as amazingly beautiful as this harpsichord but it was still beautiful, a work of art and it was also the first time I heard it solo where the sound really stood out from 15 feet away. They played bach's brandenburg concerto 5 with a long solo in it. Next though yes I would love to touch it and hit a few keys.
I have to disagree. Glenn Gould, I believe, has the best interpretation of Bach. Alard has a very similar style of interpretation of Bach as Gould too. Which is the same why I play his music.
@RWThurman not that I am aware of. However I do know that Raphael Puyana made a 6 CD set of the Bach partitas on this instrument. They are commercially available.
Merci à Benjamin Alard de nous faire entendre de nouveau cet instrument magnifique, oublié si longtemps et rendu au public depuis quelques années à peine par le regretté Rafael Puyana.
This is the absolutely unbeatable ultimate best interpretation of this masterpiece from Johann Sebastian Bach, I have ever heard, with the incredibly marvelous sound, of a congenially adequate elaborated harpsichord!
Now wait, what is this? A three-keyboard harpsichord?! Never seen one before. And it increases, obviously, much the performance capabilities. A very nice interpretation as well, no rushing, just right tempo, articulation and expression details. Really well done, congratulations and thanks for sharing this gem!
I love the Haas. Excellent choice for Bach. I hope Harmonia Mundi is reading this and re-releases the 30 Scarlatti Sonatas by Rafael Puyana on this iconic harpsichord; please and thank you lol.
Wow! That was majestic sounding and magnificent. The instrument also sounds vibrant and evokes the spirit I imagine of the period. I wasn't around then...
Wow. Despite the instrument's fame, I've always found it tonally thin and lacking in substance. Well, for the first time, I feel as if I'm getting to know the instrument - and it really is special. As for the playing: thank you for the slightly slower tempi, it's good to be able to let the music 'breathe'. Many, many thanks for posting :-)
Es una obra ejemplar ,que contiene muchísima lógica la que siguen incluso dedos, no solo la cabeza . Gracias al intérprete por su excelente presentación de esta gran obra de arte.
not at all claiming any expertise, but ive never seen a 3 manual harpsichord before. and hearing this on a harpsichord just reaffirms how metal bach actually is
Awesome harpsichord -- they don't make them like that any more. And this Hass harpsichord doesn't have the fuzz of the last one I heard recorded. Even the 20th Century Revival harpsichords never had 3 manuals as far as I know. What was the correspondence between manuals and ranks on this instrument?
Bonjour. In this instrument, you will find on the upper keyboard one 8' register and/or one 8' nazal (lute) register playing the same strings + the buff stop (jeu de luth). On the median keyboard, you have a second 8', and a third one (with dogleg coupling jacks with the upper keyboard) and the 4' register. Finally you have on the lower keyboard the 16' register and the 2' register. Traditional coupling system between the median and the lower keyboards. The lower keyboard slides under the median keyboard to stow inside the instrument. Some very rare revival harpsichords were made with 3 keyboards. I remember a big instrument made by William Deblaise with a large 5 octaves and 2 notes compass (FF to g in the treble). This harpsichord had a lyre fitted with 7 or 8 pedals to operate the different registers. Bien cordialement.
@@aquaesulensis7332 I was beginning to have an intuition it was something like that, but good to know, and good to hear about revival harpsichords being made like this as well.
For those who are confused this is a harpsichord also known as the first piano and in Bach’s time this was the piano he had to play it on and so it’s sounds a bit different on a nowadays piano 😅
This is incorrect. The piano and harpsichord are from two different families of instruments. The piano's closest relative is the clavichord. By the time the instrument in this video was created, in 1740, the piano was already around.
This is probably the best sounding harpsichord I've ever heard. What an INCREDIBLE sound
Good tempo, no rushing, no pointless rubato... astounding !
I agree, I love the fact that he gave us time to enjoy each note. I don't know why some interpreters just want to play it faster. I absolutely loved the tempo❤.
@sydmccreath4554ew
I feel like the bass line comes out really nicely with this interpretation
Honestly piano sounds much better than this
No rushing? Mf you should revalue your tempo perception this (at the start) was rushed with no emotion at all

Benjamin Alard nous donne une version magnifique dans l'esprit du grand Helmut Walcha. Enregistrement précieux. Merci.
Astonishing performance !!! What a magnificent sound. Bach's Prelude and Fugue is not rushed so that listeners can actually hear the individual notes.
I love the image of a guy casually playing the harpsichord with one hand behind his own back.
He must have an enormous reach which such a big hand! Rachmaninoff of the Baroque era.
So glad to hear a new recording on this iconic harpsichord. Merci beaucoup !

So mutch more beautiful than on a piano. This is how Bach wanted it to sound..
Only because that's all he had , give him a Steinway D- and maybe the Harpsichord would have gathered a little dust , ...
@@VirusForPrezabsolutely not.

Alard holds an unchallenged position as an interpreter of Bach
His performance is unrivaled by any other performances

No offense but you guys have the worst pianists I've seen I swear to god they're like robots and play with no soul as if they've been forced to do so

The Hass 1740 is the only extant historical three manual instrument we have left. It might be the only one that ever existed.

Dude be the OG.
Great performance
Why is this in B Minor?
During Bach's period they thought A=415Hz instead of A=440 today, so C in this era sounds much like B in ours
Great interpretation; great sound. Oh wow... look at that room... Music Producers won't understand the monochromatic ambience.
I do love this version in Baroque pitch...
