It was all done with memory chips and circuit boards and was in a big generator box that kept thousands of images on the circuit boards so when you put them all together these big circuit boards you got the COW globe ident!
Call me old-fashioned but I think TV should still be like this today cuz I bet it seemed so special and stuff when test cards and these closing down tunes came on. I wouldn't know though cuz I was born in 1996, so I can only remember from about 2001 and onwards, but I don't remember much about TV. All I know is they should bring back some of this stuff! :D
The old BBC 1 closedown was so quaint and simple. Those were the days.....
+Rio Collins That closedown was introduced one day before BBC1's Virtual Globe

One of my earliest childhood memories is watching that BBC globe that "unfolded" as it span around.
I was born in 1986.
I always had to stand when this was playing.
Sad
COW stands for Computer Originated World, which the ident was; a big computerized globe.
@3oMethylmorphine This reminds me of the BBC Video ident of that era...
Your announcer is Dave Adey.
Ha ha. I love clips like these!
Oh, cool. I never knew that. ^^ Thanks.
Do you remember who this announcer was? If you don't, it was Dave Adie.
End of an era. Funnily enough I left home that week!
@3oMethylmorphine Is it the one in th 90s? u know the crystal ball looking one?
To be just that bit more precise, it's 1:45 AM on the 16th.
What is COW, an animal that moos?
Wasn't the globe about how they as a corporation brought people together, or something?
This was from 1991, right?
Hi.
Is there anyone who can put up the first showings of the BBC1 and BBC2 idents introduced in 1991.
World Peace?
When did they stop playing The National Anthem at closedown?
I know they don't really close down these days but it was a nice touch.
In 1997.
Good riddance!
Why did they call these 'COW' images?
