- Almost six years after its introduction, the COW globe was finally put out to pasture in 1991. Here's the final showing as BBC1 closes down for the night; announcer Dave Adey warns viewers to expect a change tomorrow morning.

Just at 1 year after the COW globe was left out, there was a variant of the logo with the COW globe doing unusual tricks. (BBC 1 text ommited).

That was the BBC Video logo that was used from 1988 to 1992.

I also hated this ident, it was impressive for 1985, but it began to die out quickly for me, the virtual globe is one of the best idents/identity's the BBC used.
They still had that 70s-looking clock in 1991??

Yep - and the BBC TV still wasn't 24 hrs either!! ...amazing. You could turn on the TV back then at 3am and there'd be............nothing! literally nothing. It would either be a fuzzy screen with a 'shoooshing' noise, or colour bars with an annoying monotone note playing continuously. Don't think BBC TV went fully 24 hrs until 1997 (?) incredibly!
@@robtyman4281 ITV went 24 hours a day from 1987-1988 onwards (Ulster Television in Northern Ireland being the last ITV station to go 24 hours)

This was on 15th February 1991 into the early hours of 16th February
Just checked BBC Genome for this date and closedown was scheduled for 1.25am yet the clock clearly shows 1.45am. I can only assume there must have been an extended news bulletin but can't think what the story might've been.

The announcer we hear over the BBC1 clock before the COW globe appeared for the last time is David Adie. At least the BBC1 England clock is kept on screen for the whole of the closing announcement from Dave and then the National Anthem is played over the globe.

Well the globe era didn't end in fact. 4/10/97 was a globe welcome back to this channel, as it is now a balloon.

This ident was put into it's pasture just three days short of it's 6th anniversary.
Or technically just two days. This was filmed on the early hours of that morning.

It wasn't the end of the world, it was the end of the COW
Tommorow morning, will have a brand new logo for BBC and also all brandings. BBC One will return the clock idents. BBC Two will have a new bladed "2" idents also the return clock idents. Channel 5 and Absolute Radio will be part of the BBC and Sky family.
Hey? I haven't seen any clock idents recently, although I wish they would return.
Channel 4 show a clock before the news at 12:00 and 19:00. Its a formation of blocks that stop where the hands would go

Out of interest, does anyone know what came first. This final showing of the COW on BBC 1 or the final showing of the TWO ident over on BBC 2?
BBC2 showed their final "TWO" ident as they closed down first at 1:07am, followed by BBC1 at 1:45am.
Andy Cartledge closed BBC2 England down at 01.07 and Dave Adie closed BBC1 England down at 01.45.

I'm not from the UK, can someone tell me what's a closedown?
I’m not from the UK, but up until 1997, the BBC’s channels would end transmission for the night, then resume sometime in the morning, hence it being a ‘closedown’.

The Computer Originated World is one thing, but the real world we live in today is also a COW of sorts - COW as in a Computer-Operated World, what with smartphones and Netflix and all that sort of thing.
