  • We took a day trip to Exeter a great place to visit in the UK. With so much history, from its stunning Cathedral to it's beautiful Tudor buildings. Exeter has so much to offer for everyone and so much to see.
We spent the day walking around the historic sights and walked down the quirkiest, smallest, street in England. We enjoyed the sunshine at Exeter quay side and even saw a house that moved !!!. We were humbled by the well preserved St Catherines Almhouses the badly bombed church from world war two.
Exeter even has a dark history involving witches and was the last place in the UK that women were accused and executed for witch craft.
We can recommend visiting Exeter enough, there is so much more to Exeter than the university.

Exeter is such a nice place. Lived there for a little over a year, and it really flew by. Great memories with great people... and uni students.

I wish I could say you were correct about why the architecture in Exeter seems so inconsistent. It *is* true that the Luftwaffe attacked the city in May 1942, and yes, they did some devastating harm. (It was retaliation for the RAF's needless destruction of Lubeck and Rostock.) The reason the High Street suddenly doubles in width around halfway along its length is that the building with the mural of a woman's face is where the fires caused by the bombers came to a stop. The decision was made to widen the street from that position.
However, only about one-fifth of the city was destroyed or seriously harmed by the German bombers. And yet, between the start and end of the 20th Century, something like 90% of the architecture in central Exeter was replaced. The truth is that the city council itself chose through the 1950s to the 1980s to pull down most of the city's historic buildings, because they wanted to widen the roads. The destruction of 1942 gave the council a perfect excuse to sweep away wide stretches of the city centre, following the ridiculous logic of, "Well, we lost some of it, so we might as well lose the rest of it." A lot of the post-war changes therefore had nothing to do with the Luftwaffe.
The Nazis did a lot of dreadful things in their time, and that makes it very easy to blame them for what happened to Exeter in the 20th Century. But it's something of an urban myth. Yes, the Germans did damage Exeter, but far more damage was done under the city's own hand in the decades after the war ended.
Yes, Exeter is still a lovely place, at least more intermittently than before, but before the war it was arguably the most beautiful city in England.

Yes Exeter city council is an absolute horror show allowing the city to become incredibly overpopulated and over housed (and bringing in many thousands of people on benefits) on green sites.
