  • A close look at the Arteza art supplies haul I got - testing out the real brush pens, watercolour pencils, their cold pressed watercolour paper pad and the water brush pens, too!
    Water brush pens and the watercolour paper pads and spoken about throughout the video.
    Real brush pens are mostly discussed for the first half, and the second half is about the watercolour pencils - I hope that helps!
    Thanks for watching 💖

    I’m glad someone has done a realistic review of these products. To me they seem more like student grade products.
    Good honest review, thank you!

      I'm glad you found it useful! Based on these products alone (as I haven't tried any others yet) I'd agree that's a fair comment as it's also the impression I got :) Great for trying out new media and filling your sketchbooks etc
      I just wish those brush markers were lightfast!

      LittleSqueesh: You mention in the reply above that you "wish those brush markers were lightfast" .....how did you determine that? I have been trying to find that out but haven't seen anything to indicate on Arteza's packaging.

    • @MiraSmit
      @MiraSmit 3 роки тому +2

      @Awenda You get what you pay for, pigments cost money as does getting good lightfastness. Arteza aims for affordable art supplies, that means the quality isn't going to measure up to Caran D'ache or Faber Castell.... But they are great for the price you're paying. If they start selling open stock they could easily become the go to brand for artists on a budget.

    • @MiraSmit

      @Awenda Can't argue with that.

    I habe watched so many review videos for the Arteza watercolor pencils - all of them got them for free and all of them said how nice they were. I bought and tested them and to be honest, I hate them. There are cheap watercolor pencils out there that are really working nice and pop out when activated with water. But the Arteza ones didn’t work for me and looked like in your video. Thanks for a honest review after so many (for me) not honest reviews!

    • @LittleSqueesh
      @LittleSqueesh  6 років тому +9

      So sorry for the late reply, apparently there were a couple I never saw a notification for, doh!
      I'm so sorry to hear that, I'm always a bit suspicious when other people review things they got for free - I tend to wait a while and see if they continue using the products that were "so great" because... well if they ditch them, they can't have been that great, right! 😂
      I think it's easy to feel guilty and want to give nice reviews when you're being given something for free, I soooo wish the watercolour pencils had been nicer, I was expecting more from them, but sadly they weren't for me and I can't recommend them based on that. However the brush markers were a lovely surprise haha.
      I've got some more products of theirs for some upcoming reviews that I'll be doing in the same way (as clear and honest as possible) incase you're curious about them!
      Thanks for the feedback and if you find some lovely watercolour pencils let me know :) 💖

    I have the Albrecht Durer (Faber Castel) watercolor pencils and they DO NOT leave pencil marks. Any decent artist grade WC pencil should NOT leave pencil strokes on the paper, even cold press. I have tried the AD, Neocolor and Inktense and none of them leave lines. They dissolve completely, even when used on non-watercolor paper which I found really surprising honestly.

    • @LittleSqueesh
      @LittleSqueesh  6 років тому +6

      See this is what I would expect of water-soluble pencils! Thanks for confirming that, I've been getting some mixed feedback and it's put me off wanting to try any other. I think I'll put inktense on my wish list, I've heard great things about them :)

    • @sugarcandy243
      @sugarcandy243 6 років тому +3

      LittleSqueesh If you want to try water based mediums, Inktense are a great place to start. They're more vibrant than traditional watercolor - being ink - and become permanent when dry (after you wet them). You can even use them on fabric like silk!

    • @rynjeff1073
      @rynjeff1073 5 років тому +2

      While you say that WC pencils should not leave pencil strokes on the paper, I would have to say that I don't necessarily agree with this statement at all. There are times when I do want the texture from the pencil, but I also want the wash. I do feel that the colors that I have worked with melt enough for my purposes as well as keep some of the texture I'm looking to keeping in the piece. I think it's more your personal style than anything else that dictates what your preferences are for your work.

    I found pencil cases on Amazon that were perfect to store the colored pencils and brush pens. The kind I bought were zip folder style with individual elastics to hold each pen/pencil. Also makes it easier to flip through if you get the largest sets.

    I saw a review about arteza coloured pencils(just from random russian woman which draws portraits and have 1k followers and do not popular but helpful tips and reviews) and she said that those pencils feels familiar to her. So in total she found out that the colours(ya know it's almost impossible to find totally same colour in different brands,but there everything match), lightfastness is 5000% same as some cheap pencils from aliexpress for coloring books which she had.

  • @raggedyroad
    @raggedyroad 5 років тому +1

    I purchased these 2 weeks ago before finding your review. Thank you for your honesty. I have loads of watercolor media and wanted something that would leave behind some intentional texture. First off, anytime you have wet your paper before applying pencil the strokes will remain even with the highest quality of product. You only do this when you want to leave marks behind. Also different paper is going to perform differently for all techniques including the lines left behind, lifting, hard edges, halo, blooms etc..... I own a couple of budget sets that water down very nicely and leave no marks but I find them to lift so easily that it's difficult to layer without color becoming muddied and one of the sets leaves behind a ton of chalkiness. The pigments in these are much more saturated when swatched out than my other 2 brands and cost less per pencil. I have yet to use these for a painting or coloring book page. I am of course hoping to like them but I got them on a killer deal for only $21 so if I don't care for them they will go into a pencil bin for the kiddos to use.

  • @maddscientist3170
    @maddscientist3170 4 роки тому +4

    Watercolor : the quality of the the paper would have a lot to do with "lifting"
    Not an issue with high end papers like Arches.Same with the quality of the watercolor pencils

  • @lisathaviu1154

    The separating is because the different dyes have different weights. I got the full set of watercolor pencils and repackaged them according to numbers. If you want lightfastness, get Caran D’Ache Museum Aquarelles. The Artemis, which are really good to use, are good for sketchbooks, but I won’t expect them to be really lightfast. The Caran D’Aches are much closer to good watercolor. Also, if you want to use the different techniques, such as using a wet pencil on dry paper, use Arches or another good paper. The Artezas are OK for quick practice, but not much else.

    • @LittleSqueesh
      @LittleSqueesh  5 років тому +1

      Ooo thank you for all the info, this was interesting to read! I do keep hearing good things about the Caran D'Ache ones, I think they'll be going on my wish list! I do have some better watercolour paper, I just wanted to try the Arteza materials with their own paper - perhaps I could test them again on better quality paper though 🤔Thanks again for your comment 💖

    So I bought some of the watercolor pens from arteza, exactly the ones you show here. I actually quite like them. I like to lay down 1-2 thin layers of watercolor and than just draw with them like normal non watercolorpencils on top. The colors are layerable when used in that way. And I actually don't like when the pigment reactivates because I use alot of different artmediums when I work on a piece and like that reactivation is sometimes a huge pain in the butt.
    I actually searched a long time for a good review of these pens and you are the first to show the real flaws of the pens. So thank you alot for being so honest.

    • @LittleSqueesh
      @LittleSqueesh  5 років тому

      I'm so glad my review was helpful to you, I try to show as much as I can both good and bad! And yes, reactivating mediums can be a real pain when you don't want them to be! It may be worth looking into workable fixatives? Not an area I've explored myself but I can recall other artists doing this!

    It is so weird that all the pencils with a low lightfast rating are colors that are usually made out of pigments that are known for there good lightfastness. Black, white and earth pigments are the cheapest and most lighfast pigments on the market, I don't get why they decided not to use them.
    It's also really weird that on the other side,colors like bright pinks and magentas are rated absolutely lightfast when well-known brands like Faber-Castell and Derwent have major problems devoloping lightfast pencils in those colors. It all seems kind of fishy to me.

    • @LittleSqueesh
      @LittleSqueesh  5 років тому

      You're not wrong, and this baffled me for ages too! I honestly think they have their lightfastness ratings reversed by mistake. I plan to make a follow up video but I need to test it properly. Been hearing this a lot from other artists too!

    • @shirleymalar2773

      @@LittleSqueesh When I called Arteza about the light-fast rating system they are using they told me the exact opposite of what they told you. As you have mentioned, it doesn't make
      sense that fuchsia has a better rating that brown since it is known to be a problem color
      when it comes to light-fastness. If they are going to say they adhere to a particular rating, they can't just make it the opposite! That's why there are standard rating systems. I don't know what they are thinking -- or if they are being intentionally deceptive because their supplies have very poor light-fast properties.

  • @kathleen21411
    @kathleen21411 6 років тому +12

    Someone else did a test on these but said the lightfast rating was backwards to what you are saying and that one +was the highest rating which actually made more sense because I would believe that the fushia would be the least lightfast

    • @LittleSqueesh
      @LittleSqueesh  6 років тому +3

      kathleen21411 that's exactly what I thought too, but nope. The ratings are as follows:
      +++ = at least 100 years;
      ++= at least 25-100 years;
      += at least 10-25 years
      There is a blog post written by the frugal crafter that states this (quick Google will give you that link) and I've personally confirmed this with Arteza.
      So unless their staff are continuously getting it wrong, the info I provided is correct.
      I hope that was helpful!

      @@LittleSqueesh Actually, I did a live this past week stating that + is excellent and +++ is good, which is the info I received from Arteza directly & I showed my email response from them during my live. I have talked with Lindsay (thefrugalcrafter) as we are friends and we aren't sure why we received two different responses. I am testing them myself. Arteza also didn't responded as to how they did any lightfast testing. You will see in my email that I did ask.

      @@LittleSqueesh Seriously, reds and pinks are some of the least light fast colors out there. Browns are often the most light fast. For them to give a fusicia a 4 plus rating means it will probably fade quickly in sunlight.

    This is one of the best and most technical reviews of arteza products here on UA-cam, even if you claim that you're not very knowledgeable with watercolour pencils. I also liked how you tried to show the paper itself and how much of a tooth it has, it's honestly nothing near the abomination that is the paper from canson, not the XL one but a "college" version (the tooth of the paper should be similar to XL mixed media? Maybe? I don't have that paper)

    • @LittleSqueesh
      @LittleSqueesh  6 років тому

      Thanks so much for the kind words, Maddy - I'm glad you found the review helpful, I tried to be as clear about the products as possible! I actually quite like the paper for what it is, it feels sturdy I'm just not a fan of the texture. However! Another person commented that you can use the reverse side (which is smoother) I spoke to Arteza about this who confirmed it's true, the paper is fit for use on both sides. So in the future I'll be covering a review of the other side (including some of their other products)
      Oh no, what was wrong with the canson paper?? I've got an XL pad (super textured... don't use it, but keep meaning to try lol) haven't seen the college one!

I hope to get the hang of them and put another video up. I also hope to get to know how to be more confident to know how to use the colors. I am waiting on my blender pens like you have, those arrive tomorrow. I would love to pick up the pencils and possibly the 96 brush pens later down the line. Thank you so much for your honest review of the watercolor pencils! I was considering Arteza because I would've gotten 72 colors instead of only 36 with Prismacolor for basically the same price. I'm so glad I went with Prismacolor because watching your testing, I didn't have any problems like that at all with mine. Prismacolor all blend beautifully and break down with the water so you hardly see any pencil lines. Even though I have less colors, I don't really notice it. I got my prismacolor set on sale on Amazon for $22 usd. I would definitely recommend trying out some higher quality watercolor pencils before writing them off completely. I found them great for controlling shading, especially on smaller more detailed projects. And there's the added benefit of mixing them with your watercolor paints.

    • @LittleSqueesh
      @LittleSqueesh  6 років тому +1

      Thanks for such a detailed comment! I've had mixed feedback in regards to pencil lines showing underneath even with more expensive products - I think I'll have to do some more research/watch more videos with watercolour pencils (...or perhaps treat myself to a small set of higher quality ones 😂)
      I do think that getting more colours always seems appealing, but then when it comes to it, chances are not all of them are going to be used that often. I've got a set of 36 polychromos and I use them all the time but I still have many pencils in that set that I haven't used once (...other than swatching!)
      Usually you'll find with the expensive brands that you can buy the pencils individually, so if you notice you're lacking a specific colour a lot during painting/drawing then you can always pick one up (at least with polychromos, I don't know if that applies to other brands or even watercolour pencils - will have to check!)
      Glad the review was helpful! :D 💖

    In my opinion, there's value in having pencil strokes remaining after it's activated with water. I feel like if you want a large area done with the watercolor effect, just use actual watercolor paints.

    • @LittleSqueesh
      @LittleSqueesh  5 років тому +4

      Yes that's certainly true! I think there's something about the convenience of pencils vs paints and I personally prefer the control I have with a pencil than a brush which is why having the pencil strokes remain just wasn't for me. But each to their own! If you like that, then you might find you enjoy these Arteza watercolour pencils :) Thanks for the feedback, always good to hear other artists point of views 💖

    Where did you get the light fastness information from ? I cannot find it anywhere.
    I have a set of these which I am currently using for my journal,they are very pleasant to use once mastered and different techniques used such as pre wetting the paper,also using them with standard watercolour paints as well,I love Artezas policy in promoting creative people and producing a very reasonably priced product,I think a better system to have them at hand would be good,perhaps a special desk rack so you can access the colours quickly.
    I have Derwent watercolour pencils and they do not leave a mark like that,all colour diffuses when water is applied so perhaps the formulae is different and may require adjusting.
    You have a nice voice over for reviews,some reviewers voices are very harsh and unsuited to this kind of thing.

    I don't have the watercolor paper, but I heard the other side was really smooth for if you do not like the textured side. I have trouble with the trays for the pencils too. lol I ended up cutting the flat bottom of the semi circle out so my finger can actually grasp it. lol I haven't used the watercolor pencils on their paper. I've used them on some bristol and some Canson WC paper. I mentioned in the comments of your other video I struggle with watercolor pencils with ALL brands that I have used when it comes to the lines. Glad it's not just me struggling with their trays haha that's a shame about your struggle with watercolour pencils and the lines - I keep getting feedback that some better quality pencils don't leave those lines, I think I'll have to try get a few sets and give them some proper testing to see.
      Oh and I loooove the detail brushes! I used them in my recent elf oil painting for the tiny areas, I would have been lost without them. I can do a separate video on those if that would be helpful? 😊

    Arteza vs kuretake zig vs to bow. All the videos I’ve seen to bow has great blending if diluted with a brush. I wanted to love the kuretakes. I tested them at s local uwajamia. I found the brush bristles to be to insubstantial to offer satisfactory push or spring back like traditional brushes. Now I use Kosinski sable and silver brushes. So it’s kinda like brushing your teeth with minimal bristles after the rest have fallen out . Also the color change if I lay a kuretake down the color is pure from the marker. The deal breaker is the obvious and very disturbing color change of the pigment when adding water and blending with a brush. Arteza looks to have a substantial bristle brush and the ink does not change color in all the video sampling’s I’ve watched closely tonight. Now I’m not a you tube channeler but I do consider myself an advanced artist. Pardon the bad word autocorrect typing late on iPad flat screen no keyboard.

One side is a bit more smooth than the other." I WISH I'D KNOOOOOWN haha. Well, I know now! I feel that's something that should be added to their packaging though, it's a huge selling point to have the option of a cold pressed AND hot pressed surface in 1 pad.

      @@LittleSqueesh , two months later, it seems as if my middle name is Arteza. I'm a dilettante at best, but everything I unwrap from Amazon these days is Arteza as advertised. Not a complaint in sight, except maybe how to figure out the gel pen colors in my swatching. If I ever stop buying their products, I'll buy their stock. (Hard to do on Social InSecurity.)

    Great review! I have watercolors I haven't begun to touch, can't justify more products, even if they are reasonably priced. But the brushes seem worthy of a try. >.

    As Arteza reverse the ASTM it’s Interesting they rate fushia as 4 star given that pinks are usually the most fugitive. I find that odd. Do Arteza have any pigment listings?

    When the water drop was added it looked like the original color was nearly erased. Was it the camera..lighting etc. or touch water ?

    • @LittleSqueesh
      @LittleSqueesh  5 років тому +1

      There is a shine from the light reflecting off the water which makes it look lighter than it was (apologies for this!) if I remember rightly, adding water as soon as you've laid down the ink (for the brush markers) means you can almost completely erase it, but the longer you leave the ink drying on the paper the harder it becomes to reactivate. There are also some colours that stain the paper more (usually pinks). With the pencils it also depends on the colour and how hard you apply it - I'd reccomend testing it if you purchase these yourself because it's very hit and miss with all of them. But I wouldn't say it's nearly erased, especially the pencils seem to cling to the paper underneath!
      I hope that helps!

    I have the Real Brush Pens! I'm in love with them. I got them yesterday.(The 24 Set) At first I had problems with them. But after a few drawings I could handel them.
    Mine came with a blue Waterbrush.
    But mine dosen't wanna absorb the Colours tho. Maybe it's me. But after all I fell in love with them.
    This Review was *Super* cool! Hope you'll continue with these! (⌒▽⌒)

    I wonder how their brush pens compare with the zig clean color. I have the Zigs. They come in a plastic box similar to that, but it appears to be stronger plastic. It’s pretty sturdy.

      I've heard of zig but don't currently own any! I do hear nice things about those, though. I've added them to my wish list :) Thanks for the comment!

    Nice, but may be too much water for the watercolor pencils. Normally, you use it for details that must blend with the watercolored pencil or paint.

      My Faber-Castell Albrecht-Durer ones don’t leave lines. I just tried again pressing pretty hard to confirm. Are those the F-C ones you’re using? I think I remember the art grip ones leaving lines, but those are cheaper pencils.

    "Funny" fact: the regular expert colored pencils of Arteza are also watercolor one. They are the same fuc#$% pencils sell in a different case, with different name. They are just as bad as the one you show in the video. I buy a set of 24 watercolor pencils for 10€ (~9$) and they are sooooooo much better. And they are for kids! It is the steadler one.
