- www.redferret.net/?p=47036. Ever wondered what it's like to be the captain of a $1 billion cruise liner which is the most advanced on the sea at the moment? Yes, same here. Well we got the chance last week, when we were invited on board the incredible new Quantum of The Seas cruise liner (sister ship of the Anthem Of The Seas) for a 2 day shake-down excursion around the coast. And we got to visit the bridge to talk to the captain directly!
The ship is absolutely packed with new technology, from the snazzy kerb side check in with tablet computers, RFID luggage tracking and barcodes, to the floor to ceiling 4K LCD screens which act as virtual balconies, to deliver real time video of the sea view to inner cabins which don't have a real window.
We expected to be wowed, but we didn't expect to be so impressed with the sheer scale of the ship and it's systems, nor did we expect the visit to the bridge to be so totally awesome. It's like the ultimate boy's toy, only it weighs 168,000 tons and takes a few weeks to come to a halt on command.
This is the first in a 3 part series covering our excursion. You can find the original report here at:

A modern era "Cruise Ship Simulator" like this for PC would be epic.
Fly by wire- smart ass... what do you think? with a small joystick like that he operates hydraulics???
I work on ships and we get that joke every day. I just wanted to smack that guy in the mouth
"Is it drive by wire"
"No sir, we turn the ships pods by hand from the bridge 320m away...."
Peter Paizes yes it is “fly by wire” because you can’t possibly operate a 300m hydraulic system that control several hundreds of tons of propeller whit a little stick. “Fly by wire” is a system where you move a lever that sends an electrical signal to a computer that then sends signals to the controls that then control hydraulics with much more power. This is the case in all airbus planes ✈️ where you have a sidestick. Most boeing planes have traditional controls where you move the controls with the leverage of a big control column that with hydraulics directly move the controls. ua-cam.com/video/PeUh8TXghC8/v-deo.html
Glad someone brought this up. There is a slight language barrier. YES, the pods are electronically servo controlled.
haha maybye he misheard it
I think he thought he meant a sort of auto-pilot system
I don't think the guy asking the question knows what fly-by-wire means.
this guys has the coolest jobs in the world
I think it's amazing that with all the computer tech we have nowadays, it has reduced piloting a MASSIVE nautical wonder of a cruise ship down to moving a tiny joystick left or right. It's mind-boggling!
And for the question "Is it fly-by-wire?", yes. There's no doubt about it. At this point in history, it is far easier to build transmitters and relay-points for data between different sections of the ship (in this case, the bridge and the propulsion system) than it is to cable-wire every knob and switch. The bridge would be infinitely more complex than it is now if everything was manual.
Also, i can guarantee there is multiple safe-guards and manual overrides somewhere on the ship in case the bridge loses connection with propulsion. There's a reason this ship cost $1 billion to build.
Though really in a plane really fly by wires more about preventing someone doing something potentially dangerous with a plane, otherwise the autopilots an entirely different thing, like going too close to the terrain in a plane there's an automated call out system that literally says something like "terrain pull up" it's that which is fly by wire.
The thing though I am by far most interested in (along with a huge interest in mathematics and physics) was the shuttle (was going to say is but since of course was decommissioned in 2012) ua-cam.com/video/Jb4prVsXkZU/v-deo.html especially things like this video.
Although what I said about fly by wire, it's much bigger than what I just said it's really a highly computerised system by where it essentially replaced the need for a 3rd person mostly to be in the cockpit or the flight deck as some call it (especially pilots refer to it as that) that 3rd person after the captain and the copilot or 1st officer was really not what some called a navigator they were indeed the planes' engineer ua-cam.com/video/PeUh8TXghC8/v-deo.html
@Parallax c'mon -what only one like!!!, this guys explanation is A FLAWLESS explanation on fbw systems!
Hi sir I'm wondering is vectored thrust on AIRBUS products is where the engine on the most outboard on the wing is then increased in N1% rpm to allow a yawing action to put the aircraft on a new vector (course) and in doing things this way, Airbus was able to reduce drag in flight by not having to use the rudder to actually turn the aircraft?cheers.
@@kenlee-97 I haven't heard about auto differential thrust but Airbus widebodies do automatically trim for pitch by varying the amount of fuel in the tailplane tank. Narrowbodies as well as all Boeings except the 747 lack this feature (and the 747 just uses it for extra fuel instead of trim).
What an amazing piece engineering.
This ship is not only beautiful but it is very high tech as well with many many safety features on it in case of any unfortunate emergencies that take place on board.
This bridge tour is no different than the Oasis and the Freedom of the seas. And yes I was on this tour also.Is a beautiful ship thoe. Was not WOWED.Even the Mariner is close.Glad you got to experience.
Absolutely amazing tour, watching in my bed at 2a.m.
Thanks for the amazing, detailed review. Great ship! Excellent questions ask and ur laugh is hysterical! Lol
abenicks Thanks very much, we did enjoy the whole event. :)
im going on this cruise over christmas and cant wait! ill be doing the full tour too. i did it on freedom of the seas and it was AMAZING
Going on sister-ship Anthem in four days now, Cannot wait! I have the all-access tour booked on day 2 (sea day) It's going to be amazing. :)
30 interesting minutes!
Thanks for posting.
@Red Ferret
Wow! That trip looked so awesome! Do you realize how lucky you were, to have been able to experience that? God, that's insane! That's almost 2x as better than just meeting Toronto for the first time!
Heh, yeah we were all pretty blown away by the opportunity to see the bridge in real live motion. Total geek out. :)
“Is it like a fly by wire?”😂😂
I'm going on this cruise in January, I'm so excited, it looks amazing!
Have fun! :)
how comfy do those chairs look for the captains !!!
For the rank and file person we are allowed to take pictures but not take videos of the Royal Caribbean cruises behind-the-scenes areas. And it has to be paid for too. It's great for the general public to get a glimpse of these areas normally off limits to the general public.
Thank you for sharing this. Absolutely amazing!! I hope to be able to do a tour of a cruise ship bridge some day!! Thank you :)
Thanks, it was our pleasure. Quite an experience, as you can probably tell. :)
Mate, I wish I had been there too!! I think this would be one of the best experiences someone could have!!! Ive never actually been on a cruise and Im really wanting to do one lol. This ship will be on my side of the world soon, so maybe then I can cruise on her. Im actually scared of deep water/the ocean, but nothing could stop me from doing a cruise!! LOL
Nice video, I was at the shipyard last week where this was build, largest dry dock of the world in Papenburg Germany
I've been on quantum of seas in April 2015 its was so much fun! And I love that tone of the 7 short blast followed by one long blast and I've been on every Disney cruise ship and not been on oasis of the seas independence of the seas serade of the seas quantum of the seas and I'm going on navigator of the seas February 18 I'm excited and it's always a good idea to fly to your port a day before it ports
7 short blasts followed by 1 long blast indicates a general alarm on a ship.
Thank goodness the blasts are not one long burst like your writing. Break it up a bit with some punctuation. Much easier to understand.
Vince Johns says the guy using full stops wrong, that very short comment was 3 sentences
Hope you'll never hear 1 long and 7 shorts, for real... ;)
Thank you for this great video, and for your laughs. hh
its damn like a spaceship.
Thanks for sharing this video
Did a tour of the bridge on this ship 2 years ago on the cruise from shanghi to japan
Great video I went aboard the Royal Caribbean Harmony of the seas All Access Pass Tour including the bridge ship. It was awesome. My question here is how were they allowed to video. We were only allowed still photos only no videos
Thanks very good info
the glass floor on the captains deck was real funny.
im sure if he does a bad job they will open that window when hes there ;-)
Your fired! bye bye!
HAHAHAHA great job.
quite satisfactory informations about the biggest cruise of the world thanks.
Makes an Airbus A380 looks like a kid's toy!
No...
A380 is much more complicated to pilot
1 Billion Dollar Ship and one tiny steering wheel LOL
And no leopard skin cover
Expensive vehicles frequently have tiny joysticks on their command seat.
he didn't understand the fly-by-wire question lol
@@bruperina what ?.
@@kenlee-97 I've no clue why I wrote it. lol
Probably because it was a not-sensical question, I mean just look at these controls... Do they look like they're hydraulically actuated?
@@DamianDeEu Quite obvious isn't it? haha or Cables!
Fly-by-wire not only means that the controllers aren't physically connected to control surfaces, but also that a controller does not control a specific control surface, but defines a control input (pitch, yaw, roll, translate, accelerate) and the computer decides which control surfaces or thrusters to use to achieve that movement.
Those thruster controllers obviously don't have cables and pulleys or rods or hydraulic lines running all the way to the thruster pods, but they _are_ still controlling the individual thruster pods, so it's not fly-by-wire
Thank u for this video
My ultimate birthday present or Christmas present would be a cruise
That would be $20000 please
My dream job is an Officer on a Cruise Ship

Wow! I so want to be a member of bridge staff, or captain - especially Royal Caribbean!!
Maritime Academy and work experience/tonnage should do the job. Good luck!
You should go for the engine room tour that was amazing
Completely different world than when I was sailing on tankers. We had to wait to use the payphone on the dock...lol

Captain: Obviously this is not connected, so if I turn this nothing is gonna happen...
Ship: banks violently to starboard
Glass Moon Door for Stow aways. Good Ideal!
I wonder if they loose the computers can they control the ship manually?
Captain did not understand the question. Fly by wire means that the manual controls do not operate cables that move azipods or rudders mechanically. The controls send electronic signals to computers and the computers use actuators to execute the commands electronically. When I was a merchant marine a long time ago, all we had was a gyroscopic compass, a magnetic compass, a weather radar and the steering was either hydraulic on diesel powered vessels or steam operated on steam powered vessels. The engine commands were sent by a "telegraph" mechanism on the bridge which was connected to the "telegraph" repeater in the engine room mechanically with cable or chain. The navigation was done in the chart room by hand and calculations and sextants were often used. That was all. Today, even a 3 year old girl can command a huge ship or fly an aircraft because it is like electronic game that kids love to play. The ship and the aircraft can figure out where they are going by themselves. All that one has to do is program the departure location and the destination location into the FMS computer for aircraft and navigation management system on ship and the computers do the rest.
Tks for Nice video sir
It’s a damn trolling motor!
Ggreat video, tnx!
Greetings from automationtrader.com team! nice vid!
What they mean in 10:57 with the little stick?
I'm curious to know. Do these modern ships use a form of autopilot when simply cruising (obviously not when maneuvering into port)? I'm only guessing because when he moved the steering mechanism for the pods he said it wouldn't do anything.
Of course, almost all ships use something called heading controll, you just put in what heading the ship should have, and it keeps that heading. Many ships (I think most cruise ships) also use something called track steering, you can see the red line on the electronic chart there, that is the planned route (the black line is passed track) and when you use track steering, the computers ensure that you are always following that route, an alarm sounds when you get close to a turn, and then another when it's time to start the turn, but the ship won't start the turn before you have confirmed that it's okey to do the turn.
But even though you used manual steering, nothing would happen if you turned those handels on the bridge wing if the command was still on the mid consoll. To be able to manouver the ship from there, you have to claim the command.
Cruise ships have 3 autopilot settings: 1.track (follows the track/route on the chart) 2. Heading (follows a specific heading, true or magnetic) and 3. Course (follows a specific course, slightly different to heading as the wind/current affects the course over ground of a vessel)
So nice video
Thanks very much. :)
O come on! I was expecting a big wheel to steer the ship, not a tiny little joystick! LOL
He is the current captain of the harmony of the seas!
where does the captain sit?
at 02:40 bottem right, "trail periode has ended, please buy the full program to prevent sinking"
i am a 1 commander on a last ship and i want to work for royal caribien
Dorset? That was bloody Salcombe!
Do these tours cost anything?
good captain
I hope i can work in the cruise ship on deck departement spesialy helmsman🙏
imagine that ship of that size controlled by hydraulics would be a messy and cumbersome task of repairing!
I hope they add an "engineering tour" as one of the excursion options. LOL
Where's the horn??? I mean, the button, to sound the horn?
Wow, a tiny little joystick to steer the ship. 11:06
Yes this ship is fly by wire
You do not have Hu
Hydraulic controls from the deck to maneuver it
Fly-by-wire doesn't just mean "electrically controlled" it's more than that
So from this! I see a Billion ship. But Meerkats on the watch.
I can hold Binoculars.

I'm still here dont worryXD

Yes, still here haha. I really love this video, it speaks so much about the secrets of the bridge :D. Also, gotta love the how the cameraman brings out the personalities of the captains and crew during what I would assume to be one of many repetitive routine media tours they handle.

Aini Lina 3:19
@@a.wolfgang6423 Het doesn't get the question at all lol, he was thinking he asked something about docking with autopilot or whatsoever.
@@a.wolfgang6423 it isn't a stupid question, really, but it's not standard terminology in a maritime context as opposed to aviation context.
That ship is absolutely operated by wire. He is not mechanically turning the propellers with the controls.
He misunderstood and thought fly by wire meant autopilot.
captain claus anderson? hes the captain now for anthem of the seas
I have one question, since all the passengers will be wearing an RFID bracelet will they know at all times where each guest is located, do they have readers throughout the ship so when you pass it will know where you are?
No, not as far as I could see. The range of these bracelets (and all RFID chipsets) tends to be very small, no more than a few inches, so that wouldn't really be feasible. Interesting concept though.
RFID works at extremely short wavelengths, the range on the transmitters and receivers couldn't be more than a few inches.
flacousa62 no, that is the most silliest thing I've heard
And all of airliners
did he intend to make a Quantum Leap reference?
Haha the ship can be controlled by a little joystick haha. Idk why I found that funny
It’s kinda like seeing a huge dude with a tiny pp

Mother Nature still owns the Sea.
They still have to pay the vessels mortgage during the pandemic.
Ouch!
What's the ringing sound?
That tells them when someone falls over board. Lol
+ofdrobb and its automatic too
?
Haha like autonomous ship
Sounds like the fire warning system (It goes of on the bridge, crew check if it's real or not, if it is, they will warn the rest of the ship), often it's just a faulty sensor, or someone has taken a hot shower with an open door between the cabin and the bathroom. I work on a small "cruise" ship (takes up to 500 passengers), and usally I don't hear it at all during the shift, but other times we struggle with a sensor and it goes of all the time.
I was wondering the same thing, sounds like a muffled telephone ring!
I feel bad for the captain; what did he do to deserve this treatment? Imagine spending all those years in classes and bridges and decks to earn the opportunity to operate a ship of this size and having to deal with overgrown children's questions.
The captain is fine. It’s probably nice to have a break once in a while
if they ram an iceberg! hard to starboard!!!
Patchouli von Darnassus and this time the entire propeller will turn and it will actually make it around the ice berg

What about security? What kind of security are in place to prevent hijacking, crime, and even mutiny on the ship?
ARVIN Before anyone can get on the ship you are thoroughly searched (x-rayed, bags searched, items confiscated if they do not comply with the rules) which happens every time you get onto the ship. You also get given a "Sea Card" which is essentially ID which you have to present each time you get on and off the ship. How you get to the bridge is also a secret as there is not a way to get to through the public areas.
thats when we, Coast Guard come in! within seconds we will be on the ship. Cruise safe
One Nation Thank you for that.
ARVIN normally this is not revealed until itis being used cuz if its revealed ppl will find ways to bypass those
+jordy piejord, I was really thinking about the on board defence. Like if the crew have firearms. Do they have a team trained to deal with potential hijacking. Such a big ship, with so many people, and stuff onboard, there must be some sort of a armed group.

why is so many people getting triggered by a simple question lol, infact from a person that knows nothing about this topic found the question interesting
