I’ve been catching up on your vlogs and had a thought. If your parents aren’t using your writing shed for something else, you may want to find time to insulate it before you move home. Then you can have a dedicated year round writing spot.
I think if you state that he comes off arrogant and jokey in the beginning or when they get closer as a way of coping in these uncomfortable situations, then changing his character type should be okay. At least that is what would make it a less jarring as a reader. Having examples of the previous way he acted plus the way he is in this book, could be a good transition too. I haven't written a character like this, so you might already be doing this.
