- Ahead of the launch for the fifth iteration of New Balance’s celebrated 990, we were given the opportunity to head over to Lawrence, Boston, to take a first-hand inspection of how the famous silhouette is made from start to finish. One of NB's core selling points is their high standard of their handmade UK and USA-created products, so it was a real treat to witness the process up close and personal.
One of four Boston-based New Balance factories, the Ayer Mills location was originally built in 1910 for the American Woolen Company. It houses nearly 700 employees working across many different departments within the brand, ranging from design & development to material sourcing and finance.
The factory environment is home to 214 staff, creating 2000 pairs of shoes every single day. As we also found when we visited the Flimby factory a few years back, several of the staff have been working for the brand for almost 20 years, showing each member's dedication to making the best products possible.
The production line is broken up into four main facets, Cutting & Pre-fit, Stitching, Closing, and Assembly. Each pair takes roughly 3 hours to make from the initial cutting of the suede upper to the final quality control checks at the final stage before reaching the shoebox. Each member of the line is specially trained to ensure only the best quality materials, cut parts, stitched panels and glued midsoles are being used to create the end product.
Whilst watching each step of the process, it was interesting to see each of the small elements that go into forming each pair. There will be certain panels that keep the structure of the shoe together, and there’s a very specific order in which everything must be layered up along the production line. It's not until you get the very rare chance to see behind the curtain and experience a shoe being made, that you can really learn to appreciate a brand that bit more. Seeing how many hands each shoe passes through demonstrates the care and attention to detail that goes into each product.
Learning more about the 990v5 itself, we got the chance to sit down with Senior Product Manager Eric Vassell, the designer behind the shoe who has also had a hand in the creation of every model since the v2.

@@jaseallenson316 depending if you have wide feet. My feet are wider than the norm so I just go true to size.

The quality on Made in USA and Made in England pairs are topnotch. You really get what you pay for. Great job, New Balance! You earned a new patron in me.
I love my 990 V5's and imo they are the best pair of sneakers you can buy right now! Also they look great IRL and fit and comfort is amazing!
And made in the USA by USA workers is a plus. I don't mind paying extra for the quality. Newbalance last me for years unlike brooks last me under a year.

Purchased V5 a month ago. Most every other review remarks about the comfort. It's true. Extremely comfortable. Maybe the most comfortable sneaker I've ever owned. I also have a 6E width which limits my brand choices. NB delivers with the V5. My V3 squeaked and I was hesitant to drop $$ on the V5 but it has no squeaking problems. American made is a bonus.
Best sneakers ever. I got the 5, the 4, the 3 and just bought a new 4 by Teddy Santis. Such a pleasure to wear and see the building process by real people in the 🇺🇸
I have like 10 pairs of new balance sneakers made in USA (including 992,993,997,998 and of course the mighty 990s), really love the quality and the colorways of them, all hail new balance made in USA!
New balance shoes, swear by.. 1st pair of shoes I tried in the the military for running street and back woods also middle East. New Balance shoe company, your shoes are the best in my opinion. I just wish there was an option on your site to make my own design some day.. 💪💯%

The difference in quality between US-made NB and China-made NB is astounding. Well worth the difference in cost. It isn't just about supporting American jobs (though that too). The build quality of a 990v5 is orders of magnitude better than anything coming out of China.

The 990 series best shoes ever they improve it every series unlike the brooks beast the beast 18 was cheap and now the beast 20's are really crap no arch support post the beast 14 and 16 were great and they brooks ruined them. Thanks new balance for continuing on making a awesome shoe I have had v3 now v5 and very pleased you have a customer for life.

It's excellent to see these made in the United States. I just wish americans wouldn't price themselves out of a great product. I have been wearing New Balance shoes for many years. But the vietnam made stuff is just junk. But it's about all I can afford. I can't pay $200 for a pair of shoes. It just doesn't work for my budget. But I'm glad to see them still operating in America!

I don't know if it's just the case with the Joe's Outlet new balances, but those are crap quality control, pieces are asymmetrical between the left and the right shoes.

Worst shoes I ever owned, maybe the worst shoes ever made. I wore my 990v5s once and by the end of the day the upper had stretched so much I was swimming in them, talk about wearing a pair of battleships! I don't know if the v5 upper stitching or the suede and mesh allows such stretching/flexibility but I will never buy NB shoes again. Fortunately, even after wearing them outside on the sidewalk the NB store offered me a partial refund.

The N branding has always put me off New Balance. Nike has the Swoosh, Adidas has the Trefoil and 3 Stripes, New Balance has a capital N 😆
