I'm an Orthodox listener: great material! I like your rich evidence for 63AD. On one additional note, I was visiting Chartres Cathedral in France this summer (please visit!) and, though it is known for its stained glass, the cathedral also has a very impressive early Renaissance choir wall, built around 1500, with sculptural scenes of the lives of Mary and Jesus. The last four scenes are the Dormition, the Burial, the Assumption and the Coronation. The iconography of the Dormition resembles closely the Orthodox icon you showed, though without a Risen Christ holding the baby Mary. The Apostles are gathered around Mary with love and sadness. So beautiful and a lovely example of our shared Christian faith.

ALL ANCIENT CATHOLIC DEPICTIONS ARE ORTHODOX. BECAUSE THE CATHOLIC CHURCH WAS ORTHODOX.
The Most Holy Theotokos was DEPICTED THE SAME IN THE WEST AS IN THE EAST.
All over Italy, France, western europe you will see the Most Holy Theotokos on latin ICONS, FRESCOES, MOSAICS.

@Elizabeth Orr Hi Liz. Where in the bible can we find that there's no salvation outside the church? That you have all the truth and the sacraments . I'm alarmed at this nonsense. Please read the bible, the 66 books to help you understand Catholicism because you lack the truth. Perhaps it will change the way you think of Jesus and the church . You've been indoctrinated by that system long enough to lose touch of the bible and the truth.

That's better translated "Blessed is the one who hears God's word and keeps it"--even under your translation, you can clearly say that the more important thing was that Mary heard God's word and kept it ("Be it done unto me according to thy word") as opposed to merely physically bearing and raising Jesus.

I also feel for the victims of all those Southern Baptist Ministers - over 200 who raped over 700 of their people during a 20 year period. The Anglican Church also has many sex abuse scandals. No excuse for any of them but remember, it is not exclusively amongst the Catholic Church.

The Feast of Assumption was introduced as late as 1950 by Pope Pius 12th He assumed that she was taken to heaven body and soul but we still have Mary’s grave and pilgrimages go there constantly. . In 1854 pope Pius declared Mary was also Holy like Jesus but our prayer still says you alone are the Holy One Lord Jesus Christ. Mary told us that she received her salvation in her prayer My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my savior Luke 1:46-48 . Who was Mary’s savior? Jesus of course is the savior of the entire world Mary is a saint in heaven because she received her free gift of salvation but Mary is not God like Jesus is God and omnipresent who is our advocate and our only mediator 1 Timothy 2:4,5 1 John 2:2. Dear Dr. Marshall, In the tradition of the Eastern Orthodox Church, it is mentioned that when Virgin Mary died, all the Apostles (except Thomas), were brought miraculously to Jerusalem, to be present at the funeral service of Her. In the year 52, the Apostolic Synod took place in Jerusalem. Could it be that the Synod took place at that time when all the Apostles were in Jerusalem?

We are told in 2 Thessalonians 2:5, “…stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us,” and in 1 Timothy 3:15, “I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.” The New Testament did not give us the Church; the Church gave us the New Testament. The New Testament had been debated over for some three centuries before finally being assembled. In that time, and as it remains so today, oral tradition, letters, canonical decrees, and the Counsels, supplied and supply the faithful with right guidance. The approved canon of books took its proper place as equal to Sacred Tradition, not the other way around. Recall that Jesus is said to have taught the Twelve many things that were not in His earthly life promulgated or transcribed. Note, too, that as no creature is more revered in the ancient Christian churches than is Mary that there is nowhere in any repository a first-class relic of hers. This would be a bone; anything of her mortal frame. Certainly, of all the Saints, there would be a coveted article of this type had her body not been translated wholly into Heaven.

Also, using 63AD as her dormition and Assumption leads one to think her final age using the heavenly number of "7" with her age being 77 if she was 14 years old when the Immaculate Conception occurred. I'm unaware of any Catholic resource that states Mary's age definitively at the moment of the Immaculate Conception. But 14 seems reasonable. The beginning of maturity and adulthood (in those days). So 14 years of age plus 63AD would make Mary 77 years old at her Assumption. Just a thought...would like to hear other opinions on this.

At a Catholic funeral mass the priest will pray for final remission of sin for the deceased. This will entail the deceased entering Paradise cleansed from the effects of sin. This translates to God declaring the person not guilty even though all of us are guilty of sin. In the case of Mary her absence of sin is a foretelling of that state when humanity is eventually freed from the corruption of sin and death.

Christ was allegedly born in 6 or 7 BC, being that St. Dionysius Exiguus didn't realize that Gaius Octavius and Cesar Augustus was the same one person. Thus, he thought that the 6th Year of Our Lord was the 1st one. This would mean that Mary was born between 22 and 25 BC, if not between 26 and 28 BC. The year of her dormition is more likely 40 to 55 AD.

I learned about the 'Assumption of the Body and Soul of Mary into heaven' dogma when I was 11 in preparation for my Confirmation.
As young as I was back then, I rejected it as impossible - and I still do.
Catholicism is an adoration of two deities - Male and Female.
Pope Pius XII was a big promoter of the 'Blessed Lady' deity.
So was the Polish Pope John Paul.
The vision of Heaven as promoted by the church could not contain a physical human body and what exactly does "Assumed" mean?
I'll ask my very nice parish priest that over coffee around August 15th next while it's in the air.

      @dukadar o'dear
      11 years old?
And at that age you rejected something of profound theological meaning?
You have no idea of what you are expressing.
God is not subject to your human limitations and, as you know, Mary is the Mother of Jesus who is God.
Being created pure by God means that her end will not be the same as yours or any other human being. Can you understand that fact?
Jesus ascended by His own power, but Our Lady was assumed by the power of her Son’s victory over death.
The Bible never teaches sola Scriptura. Protestants can't prove it from Scripture. Beside, there are other doctrines held by Protestants, too, based on NO biblical support. One clear example is the canon of Scripture. The Bible never lists its own books. The “Table of Contents” comes entirely from Catholic Christian tradition. Yet Protestants accept it (minus seven books); and this is contrary to sola Scriptura.
All Catholic and Christian doctrines must be in harmony with Scripture; must not contradict it; also, some doctrines are able to be supported only indirectly, implicitly, or by deduction from other related Bible passages.
The deductive argument of Mary's assumption has to do with the “consequences” of Mary's immaculate conception: a doctrine more directly indicated in Scripture (Lk 1:28 indicates her sinlessness).
Bodily death and decay are the result of sin and the fall of man (Gen 3:16-19; Ps 16:10). An absence of actual and original SIN would allow for instant bodily resurrection.
Jesus' resurrection makes possible universal resurrection and redemption of our bodies as well as souls (1 Cor 15:13-16). Mary's assumption is the “first fruits,” sign, and type of the general resurrection of all mankind.
      ▪︎1 CORINTHIANS 15:17-26 (RSV)
      17. If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.
      19. If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all men most to be pitied.
      20. But IN FACT Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.
      21. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead.
      22. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
      23. But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ.
      24. Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power.
      25. For He must reign until He has put all his enemies under His feet. 26. The last enemy to be destroyed is death.
Here are five biblical analogies that have strong similarity in important respects to Mary's bodily assumption:
      ▪︎2 Kings 2:1, 11 . . . the LORD was about to take Eli'jah up to heaven by a whirlwind, . . . [11] . . . And Eli'jah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
      ▪︎2 Corinthians 12:2-3
      2. I know a man in Christ who 14 years ago was caught up to the third heaven . . .
      3. And I know that this man was caught up into Paradise -- whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows --
      ▪︎1 Thessalonians 4:16-17
      16. . . . And the dead in Christ will rise first;
      17. then we who are alive, who are left, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so we shall always be with the Lord.
      ▪︎Hebrews 11:5
      5. By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death; and he was not found, because God had taken him. . . . (cf. Gen 5:24)
      ▪︎Revelation 11:11-12
      11. But after the three and a half days a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood up on their feet, . . .
      12. Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, "Come up hither!" And in the sight of their foes they went up to heaven in a cloud.
In three of these instances, the person didn't die (in one the person even came back); in two they died first. The Church hasn't declared whether Mary died or not. All of these events occur by virtue of the power of God, not of men.
Jesus ascended by His own power, but the Blessed Virgin Mary was assumed by the power of her Son Jesus' victory over death. Hers was an “immediate resurrection.” One day all who are saved will be bodily resurrected. Mary was the first after Jesus' resurrection: quite appropriately (and even, I submit, “expected”), since she was Jesus' own Mother.
      May God bless your discernment.

      Dukadar,
"Santa" may be your archetype but I prefer someone more real, like Jesus. Do you know why? Because He, being God, means what He says and I, along whith millions and millions of Catholics, believe what He says in:
      ▪︎MATTHEW 16:18
      18. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it.
      And we believe:
      "My Church" means ONE Church!
And so that there will be no doubts on His holy Will, He tells you clearly:
      ▪︎JOHN 17:21-23
      21. so that they MAY ALL BE ONE, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me.
      22. And I have given them the glory you gave me, SO THAT THEY MAY BE ONE, as WE ARE ONE,
      23. I in them and you in me, that they may be brought to PERFECTION AS ONE, that the world may know that you sent me, and that you loved them even as you loved me.
What do those words tell you?
      To me they clearly say:
      UNITY!
      NOT THOUSANDS OF PROTESTANT DIVISIONS.
Against the arrogance of imposing, "me and my bible" individual interpretations, Jesus tells His ONE Church:
      ▪︎MATHEW 18:17
      17. If he, a sinning brother, REFUSES to listen to them, TELL THE CHURCH. If HE REFUSES TO LISTEN EVEN TO THE CHURCH, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector.
      ▪︎LUKE 10:16
      16. Whoever listens to YOU listens to ME. Whoever REJECTS YOU rejects ME. And whoever rejects ME rejects THE ONE who sent me.”
This is why our Lord gives His one and only Church full authority:
      ▪︎︎MATHEW 18:18
      18. Truly, I say to you, WHATEVER YOU BIND on earth shall be BOUND IN HEAVEN, and whatever YOU LOOSE on earth shall be LOOSED IN HEAVEN.
      "Whatever" means everything!
That is called legislative and judicial authority in ONE CHURCH ONLY!
St. Paul believes Jesus and tells you the same with clear and specific words:
      ▪︎EPHESIANS 4:3-6
      3. STRIVING to preserve the UNITY of the spirit through the bond of peace:
      4. ONE BODY and ONE SPIRIT, as you were also called to the ONE hope of your call
      5. ONE LORD, ONE FAITH, ONE BAPTISM
      6. ONE GOD and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
The Bible needs a Holy Spirit-inspired human interpreter to teach TRUTH with authority, that's why St. Paul says in:
      ▪︎1 TIMOTHY 3:15
      15. if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is THE CHURCH of the living God, THE PILLAR and FOUNDATION of the TRUTH.
      FINALLY!
You must consider and remember this Holy promise made by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in:
      ▪︎MATTHEW 28:19-20
      19. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them (Through the Holy Trinity):
      1) In the name of the Father
      2) and of the Son
      3) and of the Holy Spirit,
      20. and teaching them to obey EVERYTHING that I have commanded you. And remember, I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS, TO THE END OF THE AGE.”
Sadly, many like you do not believe Jesus when He says that His ONE CHURCH will never be abandoned by Him.
      May God bless your discernment.

The Catholic Church has NEVER taught that Mary is a deity to be adored and worshiped as is God Himself. She was and is now venerated--honored--because she is the most pure Mother of Our Lord Jesus Christ. "Assumed" means "taken up". Our Lady did not ascend into heaven under her own power; she was taken there by the power of God.

      I understand Catholicism very well.
Christianity was in fact founded by Saul of Tarsus who encountered Jesus only in 'Visions' ie by way of hallucination.
His Epistles predate the Gospels by a generation at a time when generations were brief.
The Abrahamic religions and indeed all other religions are functions of Culture and nothing more.
The Biblical 'Old Testament' (Christian title) is interesting, poetic in places, has good and evil in it but is entirely mythical.
There's not a shred of Archaeological evidence that Joseph, Moses the Hebrew slaves etc were ever in Egypt and it's a very extensively dug up country in this regard.
Buddhism, I find, to be most worthy of study and practice but then again it does not claim to be a religion.

I, however, do feel she will crush him. I love Our Lady and have immense faith in her. That doesn't mean I worship Mary, it just means I have great respect and love for her. Jesus is and always will be The Man!

Mary has made clear to certain mystics and saints that she chose to die in emulation of her Son, though she didn't have to. But her death was like gently falling asleep while in a state of joyous ecstasy. Jesus died, though he was without sin, but the Father did not let His holy one to see corruption. Mary's Assumption was more than a transition - it was a resurrection from the dead. This is the tradition of the Latin Church.

Well, it's actually not, because Mary cannot DO anything. She cannot grant us what we ask for because she isn't a God. However, because she's extremely close to God she is the best person who can intercede for us to the one true Lord. Through Mary we can get to Jesus and Jesus is salvation. The same way that Noah's Ark saved humanity, the same way Mary has the ability to take us to Christ and offer us fully unto his son's will and what he wants. She IS the new ark of the covenant.

    • @nightingale2505
      @nightingale2505 5 років тому +1

@tony She didn't have to die because she was born without sin. She's the new Eve; the enimity between the serpent. Genesis 3:15 speaks of this. Mary did not have any mortal sins because she is total opposite to Eve. Therefore, she didn't need to suffer death the way we know it.

    • @nightingale2505
      @nightingale2505 5 років тому +3

@tony why would God choose a sinner to carry his only son? You operate on something called Sola scriptura.Jesus gave us the church to preach his word and the good news: he ordained priests - the apostles - and Pope's - Peter their leader. So where in the Bible does it say that one should *only* take the entirety of the truth from the Bible? If you believe that the Bible is the only source of truth, where's the word (holy) "Trinity" in the Bible? Where's abortion in the Bible? Where's contraception? Regardless of it not being there, we know that Trinity is the truth of God being one - father, son and holy spirit - and abortion and contraception is wrong.
God gave the ultimate grace to Mary IN ORDER for her to carry his son who is THE ONLY SOURCE of salvation. Luke 1:42 says that Mary is the most blessed among women. Luke 1:26 said to her that she's Highly favoured. God promised that he'll make "enmity" - hostility - between the serpent and the woman. That's why Satan hates Mary so much.
Hope this makes it more clearer.

    • @nightingale2505
      @nightingale2505 5 років тому +1

@tony if all have sinned, did Jesus as well? See what I mean. The word of God is immeasurable in comparison to anything else. Therefore the church, being one body - the body of Christ - speaks the word of God. And anything the church says is infallible. Jesus obviously has never sinned, because he's free of the original sin. What the Lord Says goes; what the church says goes because the church is in unity with the holy spirit - aka God.

Mary lived with a natural-mortal body and not a preternatural one. She was Immaculate by Mercy, not by justice. She was Immaculate via the foreseen merits of Christ. Thus, she had to meet with these merits, in order to fully identify with Christ, and such merits are in full fruition via Christ's death. She had to travel through that doorway ... through that particular valley of death.

Mary is the new Eve. Eve was banished from Eden since her destiny was bound up with Adam. Mary's destiny was likewise bound up with the destiny of her Son, the new Adam. Our Blessed Mother is also the new Ark of the Covenant (Luke clearly draws this analogy in his gospel.). When he was anointed king, David's first priority was to construct a sacred resting place for the Ark, a sanctuary in Jerusalem. (He started the building of the first temple.) When Jesus ascended into heaven to take his Davidic throne at the right hand of God, his first priority was to provide a sacred resting place for his Mother in the heavenly sanctuary.

Luke's genealogy traces Jesus back to God through Adam, and we read that through Adam all have sinned. You aren't supposed to twist the words of scripture to your own destruction. If "all" has Jesus for an exception, how do you eliminate other exceptions? The bible calls Joseph a righteous man. We hear that Abraham was justified by faith. There must be others as well. Why do you say Mary sinned? The bible says "Judge not, lest ye be judged." It also says not to bear false witness. What do you know whether anyone sins? The life each lives is lived unto God.

Enoch and Elijah was taken to heaven. I have to consider why would it be less for the Mother of God (Ark of the Covenant) to be assumed into heaven and not left to decompose. Her Son. I feel, would not let this happen out of His love for her, along with the 5th commandment to honor the mother and father. Blessed be God forever.

The holy bible is a declared canon of the Catholic Church in the 4th century, it came from Tradition, it is mirrored from the Catholic Calendar, just like the Assumption, Christmas day, Holy Week, etc etc. 2ND Declaring a dogma does not mean it is a new belief. Declaring a dogma is not set on one period. A dogma is declared by the church if its Sacred Tradition is challenged by its enemies and doubters. Marian dogmas was never a big controversy or issue in the 2000 year history of the church. The authority of the church is not only for one generation. 3RD John saw in heaven the Ark and The woman of revelation in his Book of Revelation 11:19 ; Revelation 12 which describes the woman who brought forth the Messiah King Jesus and that woman is Mary because Mary carried and brought forth The Lord God Jesus in her womb. This is another clear proof that Mary is in heaven body and soul

@@alfray1072 you're right. It's all catholic tradition. Certainly not scriptural. Traditions that are not found in scriptures. Tradition that scripture, namely Jesus and Paul are not very fond of. If you notice scripture when it talks about tradition is not favorable at all. Tradition that scripture says, "stand fast, hold, keep the traditions you HAVE BEEN taught, not will be taught. Scripture says "contend for the faith (tradition) that was ONCE delivered to the saints". Scripture also says that God's word is FOREVER settled in heaven". So how your church continues to add and take tradition at will, is "crazy".
Lastly, on revelation 12. It can't be Mary. Not if you read 12:2. It describes a pregnant woman who is suffering pain associated with child birth. So if it's Mary than the curse in Genesis applies to Mary. Where God tells the woman that in pain she would conceive. Those, genesis an revelation, can't contradict. There is no exception clause there for Mary, right? Does genesis 3:16 &19 say Mary is excluded? I know your church teaches that, but does scripture support that? No, as you said it's all tradition made up, evolving constantly throughout the years. The ever changing church. Changing as each pope declares his own dogmas. Then tries to say they are found in scripture. Now on your last comment about Mary. That she is in heaven, having been assumed. That is nothing but "speculative theology". Why is scripture abundantly clear on the ascension of Elijah, Enoch and Jesus himself but nothing on the much venerated and worshipped Mary? The simple reason is, it didn't happen. So revelation 12 proves nothing of the sort. It most definitely does not prove it is Mary in revelation if Genesis 3:14-19 are true.

So other than tradition, according to your church, the bible or Sola scriptura are the only two sources for Divine truth? Is tradition called pure and perfect in scripture like the bible is? Is tradition literally God inspired or breathed? Is tradition called God's word in scripture? And why does your church say tradition is EQUAL to scripture? That implies that the bible is the higher standard. Yeah, Sola scriptura is so wrong but your church makes tradition equal to it. If you were a Bible reader, you would notice why people of God failed. They failed because they abandoned the instructions of God and went after "other gods" in the old Testament and in the new Testament, they run after "another gospel" (Galatians). Paul warns that we should not go beyond what was written, and in Leviticus 10 the sons of Aaron offered strange fire which in Hebrew could be translated as "unauthorized, foreign or profane." God not only rejected their sacrifice; He found it so offensive that He consumed the two men with fire. I have listened to and researched many arguments and explanations about Marian doctrines and dogmas, I have never found them credible ~ they are made-up stories. As if that's not enough, they are made to be believed by all Catholics who do not have any idea what worship is. This goddess is worshipped across the globe while Catholics insist it's not worship, but veneration ~ which the same. This is the same as offering strange fires before God, and God will hold you and all your fellow Marian believers accountable. There is no way God will overlook this; because you know exactly what you are doing, and you can freely read the Scriptures to know how God is worshipped.

Church Teaching doesn't specify, so we don't know. Church Teaching says that Mother didn't die, that she ascended into Heaven (body & soul, together). No death. It isn't helpful to speculate.

Mary was told by our Heavenly Father that she would live an additional 15 years after the resurrection of our Lord, according to private revelation to the mystics. If you add all those numbers you come up with an age of 64.

It is a tradition that Luke "interviewed" the Virgin Mary. This is an assumption based on Luke 2:19. This does not means Luke "interviewed" Mary in person. This information could have been given to Luke by one of Mary's relatives or closed friend. Our Lady had younger sisters , cousins, aunts, nephews, nieces, etc. The assumption that Luke talked to Mary in the year 60 is false. The Virgin was not assumed into Heaven at 80! It is reasonable to think that Mary was taken into Heaven while the 10 remaining Apostles were still ALIVE(Between 40AD and 50AD). She was taken into Heaven at about 60 years old.

Protestants like to insist that Mary was a sinner; Mary died; Mary was not taken up to heaven.
But the next moment they will talk about God's grace is sufficient for us; when Jesus comes, believers at that time won't die but they will meet the Lord in the air.
The inconsistencies in the protestants' teachings shows they were led by the spirit of error.
If God's grace is sufficient for them to overcome adversities, what about God's full of grace given to Mary even before the angel appeared to her? Will God allow the Devil to mock Jesus by calling Jesus' mother was a sinner who died and was held by the tomb up till now?
If people like Enoch, Elijah were taken up to heaven and believers at the last day will be taken up to heaven, why won't God take up Mary to heaven?
What the Catholic Church say about Mary is very probable and very reasonable. But consider Protestants' teaching. What were the basis of saying Mary was a sinner? Did they have any specific revelations about Mary being a sinner? No. Did they have any historical proof that Mary was a sinner? No. But still they could pass judgement that Mary was a sinner even though they could not point out any sin except the original sin by making general assumption. They rule out exceptional cases could have exceptional experience.
If God cannot stop transmitting of the original sin to Mary from her parents, then Jesus Christ too must have received the original sin from Mary.
If Mary cannot be taken up to heaven, then believers at the last day too must all die by applying the same principle. They cannot meet the Lord in the air without undergoing like any other.
