This is their debut, Bang PD believed in them so much he threw what he had at their debut. His and his companies mindset has always been to go big or don't bother, so the writing, music production, choreography and video production are all top notch. They did two music videos at debut , this one and We are Bulletproof p2. With every comeback everything just kept getting better and better. No they weren't a big deal in Korea when they debuted but they kept at it until by end 2017/beginning 2018 their home country couldn't ignore them anymore.

I think maybe what they are not quite understanding is the kind of standard that was already set for kpop, the standards even from the get go are just expected to be on a different level. Like the excess, the flashiness, etc... to my understanding thats just apart of the genre in a general sense, especially when it comes to you know, outfits, performances, and music videos, etc... Like they may not have had the most resources, but they still needed to come out to impress. I hope I"m explaining this right. Kpop is just different from the very start. As a genre, or you might as well say more a cultural thing, there are different standards even at a base level. This is an important part to understand, because to some it may seem rather a lot for a band just debuting, but for a kpop band debuting it probably was more along the standard starting lines. I personally can't say all this for sure, but from what I have come to learn about what kpop was like even at that earlier time and also what it is like now, (so to speak),
      but yeah....
taking into consideration these things that I have learned or have observed, this is my best understanding, hope I"m not horribly wrong, or really far off. If so, sorry, my bad.

    • @linneajoette
      @linneajoette Рік тому +13

@@sinevins your quite right a debut is expected to be something. Kpop acts only get one shot so they have to make an impression. Unfortunately the who you know and are associated with also makes a big difference. Bigger companies had more resources or clout to help their groups count. I wasn't an army in 2013 but holy crap did I notice them and did they make an impression. They were everywhere and constantly performing so you got exposure to them, it might have only been their own created content but it was always worth a watch. I was hooked after seeing them at Music Bank Mexico as they were such genuine people and goofy BUT once they hit that stage they were incredible.

BTS joked amongst themselves on their 100-day anniversary that Jimin hated lifting his shirt during the choreo - but that as time progressed during live performances he came to love it because of the wild response he got each time from the audiences 😂 RM wore sunglasses CONSTANTLY due to insecurities about his looks, and J-Hope wore a large facemask (you saw it dangling under his chin in the video) for the same reason. BTS members absolutely cringe when they look back at this era - but their songs and dance talent were already so solid that we ARMY cherish these 'fetus-BTS' days

This song is inspired by HipHop as BTS was supposed to be a hiphop group before becoming an idol group and I love the atmosphere of the MV too as you can clearly tell how hungry and passionate they were and still are.
Also I love when JK raps as some people forget he can actually rap and my fav bits in the MV is when Jimin shows his abs during the choreo for the chorus and also when Jimin runs across the other members ba k then after he manages the highnote which I love.

They were actually always an idol group from debut… they just called them a “hip hop idol group.” I always think it’s funny ppl look at the lift at the end and just say jimin did it… even though baby jungkook is the one who has to pick up his big brother and run with his full body weight sideways , drop jimin on one side of the stage and sprint to the other side of the stage to sing at the same time as jimin after all that lol jimin just kicks his feet to pretend to knock them over as he’s being carried …. He’s not doing anything difficult there lol jungkook is . I do love jimins little high note at the end of it though… it’s so cute how he fusses one hand in the air as he does it with his little sideways hat…. And this is nothing against jimin…. It’s just crazy that people miss the other half of the stunt who is doing most of the work lol

Maybe it’s bc I’m 30-years-old and can only see them as total babies trying to look all tough and grown (I say this out of nothing but pure love and adoration for them), but I can’t help but to smile and laugh fondly. They’ve really come into themselves in the last decade.
Jimin’s transformation is always the most jarring to me. In an interview, he even says how he was trying so hard to appear tough and macho before realizing it was okay to just be himself. They’ve all softened their edges and embraced their true selves over the years. I’m so proud of their growth and maturity individually and as a group. 💜

By their debut, the group has been together for at least a year, and for RM and Suga, close to three. I get emotional thinking about their road to success going through so many obstacles. Yes. Jimin was putting on that image in order to meet the expectations at that point in time. He didn't like it, but really wanted to be retained in the group (he was last one to join the team). I have also learned that men from Busan (Jimin's hometown) are/were expected to be tough and manly. I believe Jimin does have a male strength to his personality that we don't see much because it is tempered with his soft heart and caring for others.

They've grown so much, and witnessing their growth as an individual and musicality was really a blessing.
Your curiosity about their musical era/ phase will be answered if you watch their album in chronology. here's a resume:
2013-2014 School trilogy (No more dream, N.O, Boy in Luv)
2015-2016 HYYH (The most beautiful moment in life, this is the start of BU, BUT you don't need to dive deep into the BU if you feel overwhelmed, you could enjoy their music as usual because that's what brings us together :))
2017 Wings era (Blood sweat tears)
    2018-2019 Love Yourself era (Her-Tear-Answer)
2019-2020 Map of The Soul (Persona, 7 which title track was ON)
2021 BE (title track Life Goes On), Dynamite, Butter, PTD
2022 PROOF we are here :)
One of their MV director (Lumpens) said that Bang PD paid so much attention to their mv and always tried to get the best shot possible (i forget where I watch this though). and maybe later, you could watch Rise of Bangtan series, because it shows many behind the scenes and was put togeher so well :)

What I love abt BTS is, theyre always themselves, on stage off stage. One of my favorite things about Run BTS is that it's calling on this early sound and bringing it into their present. They're not rejecting who they were then, it's all part of the same story.
All three of the maknae line were so young and changed so much. Jimin found so much power when he stopped portraying this kind of masculinity & embraced a more natural way of being. V kept the intensity but added so much polish and grew into his face. And Jungkook here is a kid -an actual kid - doing an incredible job of performing a role that isn't who he is. He grew into a man with an edge, but that's not all of him. He dances like he wants to fight the world and does karaoke live with army where he says "last song" about the last five songs and cries onstage. They changed so much.
I mean, all seven of them grew up and changed and figured out how to be in the world, and their company grew with them. Their musical and stylistic evolution is really fascinating. 😁 The youngest ones just feel so unformed at debut!
Oh, and they laugh at themselves, now, so you're right that you're laughing with them. RM groans at the hairstyle, they all roll their eyes with what looks to me like affectionate humor towards their younger selves. It's all very healthy and wholesome 🤣

Creating a group takes a lot of investments even before the debut. Years of different training, accommodations, concept development etc. Big Hit even did it the decent way unlike some contracts that have the artists pay back all the invested money before they themselves get any money at all; slave contracts that can leave them in debt forever if they don't succeed. Big Hit had an extremely limited budget and they basically bet the company's future on these guys' succes. I can't even imagine the weight they must've felt at such a young age.

There is a very emotional clip of Jimin (either from a vlive or a documentary) where he tearily speaks to his younger self, saying that in those days, he put himself under a lot of pressure to be manly and that now he can just be himself. He also mentions in one of the Festa's that exposing his abs during that choreo. was not something he was particularly comfortable with; I think because he wasn't comfortable yet with himself. 💙💜💜💜💜💜💜🐳🌌♾

One of the best things is being able to travel back and forth through their content and see the growth in real time.
Aside from the obvious physical growth (wow), they're still the same. They're still 7 hungry young men with so much to show. The same ambition to make music and be loved. The same men with so much passion. The same men with so much goofball energy, lol. Seeing how much they have matured it's always funny when they say things like, "I can't believe we had fans". I love seeing the growth of each of their identities. BTS cringes when they see their younger selves, especially Jimin. But I'm so glad they are who they are. I'm beyond happy with whom they have become as individuals.
    I'm riding with these men...FOREVER! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

i love how they have evolved and finally found their own style. It's so cute seeing them act like a wannabe macho here like babies tryna act tough but in a cute way showing how hungry and passionate they were and i'm glad that they have transformed into their true selves but i still cherish this old bts, i loved these songs and i hope they try them in the future again~

Jimin has talk about how hard was for him at those times cause he really wanted to appear like a "strong man", his toxic masculinity was hard to handle for him but now he can just be himself, and i think that's why he's the one who has changed the most, I'm happy for him 💜

This song and what has come after that is the manifestation of their vision. To show their real selves through their music. Then eventually, they changed as people over time, so did their music. If you'd like to see their journey, there's a great documentary for that. Its called, "The Most Beautiful Life Goes On: A Story of BTS." There's 2021 and 2022 update. You'll see how they started with No More Dream to Butter.
P.S. No worries about laughing. BTS themselves laughed over their cringe years. 😂

i LOVE no more dream and i especially love the message they’re sending: “i know everyone around you wants you to have a stable job and to have ‘normal’ dreams (big car, big house, big rings) but don’t be afraid to take the risks necessary to follow your REAL dreams (like becoming an artist)” it’s a very bts way of debuting, especially when you know that this was not a topic spoken about, even less in the kpop industry. bts really debuted with full honesty and really represented what the youth was going through.

[Trust me: This is the Abridged summary.] If it's eras you want: This was part of the School Trilogy of albums, then they went into their youth trilogy, like Young Forever (and why what happend a Whimbly was so 😭) Then we got the Wings Era, which is a WHOLE thing if you want to dive in. You'll wanna read that book Damien by Hurman Hess before so it will make more sense. Then it's worth mentioning part 2 of that Era because of Spring Day, which was on the re-release. That song alone is a whole thing. Then we got the Love Yourself era and that Trilogy of albums. Then Map of the Soul Era(when I became army) So we got Persona and 7 from that time. THAT was originally planned as their farewell before the military, so Moon was Jin's original "Goodbye for now."
But then the pandemic hit and their world tour got canceled. They saw how depressed global armys were getting so they decided to make Dynamite to cheer them up. American radio actually picked it up cause it was in English. They created another album Be, which was about handling life during the pandemic. Then came the grammy nod and such powerful international attention that they passed the "BTS Law" giving them a couple extra years to defer military service, while half the country argues they should't serve at all cause they were pumping so much $ into the SK economy. Dynamite led to Butter led to Permission to Dance led to another Grammy nod and at last they were able to perform a few shows in LA last winter then Vegas in spring of this year. So that Summer Jin planned to enlist but then that Busan concert became a thing. He didn't want the show to be sad, so they waited til after to announce that all the members will enlist over the next couple of years.
    *Phew
    Any questions?

  • @lisa_m4037
    @lisa_m4037 Рік тому +6

Yes, you finally see their debut song/video. You also got introduced to Rapper JK. JK being the center as well as the Maknae would learn all parts of their songs whether vocal or rap. He is able to step up and help out when needed for any parts of a song. He doesn't do it often because BTS is 7 and they like to reserve any empty spot for that missing member.
They were original a hip hop "idol" group. For me they are what they need to be during any given period in time. We say their genre is not, hip hop, rap, r&b, their genre is BTS.

  • @luvBTS7
    @luvBTS7 Рік тому +1

It's key to understand just how different BTS were at debut from every other idol group. The hip-hop focus, the look, and most importantly the messaging speaking directly to the youth, to empower them, THAT is what made BTS stand out and earn a unique type of loyal fan from the beginning. But it also made them less popular with large swaths of Koreans because they didn't fit the idol group mold, and most k-pop fans back then wanted the more cookie cutter experience. The k-pop industry is becoming a bit more varied in recent years, but a large part of the appeal remains the same. And that's ok, nothing wrong with fans liking what they like, it's just important to understand how BTS standing out from the crows is why they've walked a different path from the beginning.

Once you grow with them, their music, their message, etc.. you start to have a true appreciation for every song, every era, every chapter.. like, I was definitely take aback by their earlier music, Dope was my intro into Bts and that was a pretty tame song, so it was definitely easier to digest, but now, seven years later.. and I revisit these older songs all the time. They really transport you to the beginning, the literal kids with just a pen and a dream.. lol very nostalgic ! They were really out here making bops like WABP and Danger at their tiny age.. I could never ! The messages too.. no one was doing it like them, they risked it all and it’s payed off 🫶🏽

React to J Hopes More and Arson, you're going to be so confused on how different his recent Solo stuff is from what you know about him. Hobi made history in headlining as the first Korean at a big American Musical Festival, he soled 105K Tickets giving Lollapalooza their biggest Crowed in History, he soled Merch worth of 1 Million Dollar, staff that worked there for 30 Years with Music Legends never experienced something like this. the Major of Chicago and the City thanked him for Performing because he bought so much life and Tourism into the City. Hobis Debut Album, Jack in the Box, is the most critical acclaimed Album by a Korean Soloist in History. Recommend Watching his History Making Lollapalooza Stage too. His Song Equal Sign was submitted to a Grammy Award Sub Category about Social Change.

All those adlibs and highnotes are JIMINS. JIMIN is the only who used to do those runs, adlibs & Highnotes in Bts songs early on. Now u saw their Debut song u get it what I been saying for so long.
And the JIMINS ABS part is the reason Bts been put on the map and noticed by people after their Debut stage ( which is them got to perform live on a music show) bc their debut song was a Flop for a debut song from an unknown group from an unknown agency.
But JIMIN gone Viral for making the Killing part aka standing out part in the song with his abs choreo that on SNS ppl were searching for the performance for the “Guy with Abs & Performance were the showing abs” the autocomplete were completing the search engine with that term bc of JIMIN ❤️‍🔥 So fairly Can say JIMIN Put Bts on the Map as 100s of K-pop groups debuts every year and hardly 10 grps get noticed in that 3/4 grps lasts for few years and Bts was totally Nobodies in every way ❤ so Yeah JIMIN always been that All Rounder Xfactor who Made Bts stand Out in every way among other K-pop groups Bts Nationally & Internationally & KILLING PART MAKER since their Debut 🔥🥰 So soo Proud of JIMIN 😍😘 Can’t Wait JIMINS SOLO DEBUT PJM1 IS COMING ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

2016 their music and image started to change. Towards the end of 2016 they started incorporating contemporary dance on their performances after everyone found out that Jimin studied contemporary dancing when they guested in TV show a caller who knew him from his old school requested for him to do contemporary dance. He showed off a few moves and the members were amazed to see it for the first time in 3 years that they've known him as a member.

To me it isnt so much different stages it is more like a natural growth and exploration with their music. They cover so many genres and they arnt afraid to mix it up to whatever suits the song. When they first started they were meant to be a "hip hop group" in style so their look was harder but the music was always lit. In SK the quality of all music videos are always high lvl regardless of wether its a debut group or a well establish "big group". Bts at the time were still a very small fish in a very big pond. Two years later the company was still struggling so much that they used their managers cars in the MV for Run. Now they are the biggest fish in the global ocean and they got there not just because of their work ethic but because they are genuine, lovable, funny and they all have a passion for music.

My niece introduced me to BTS over 4 years ago. Everytime we watch "No More Dream," she always says they are 7 good boys trying to act like bad boys. She says they are saying, "We bad!" and Armys are saying "they ain't bad, they ain't bad at all!" They are good boys! LOL But they do a great job of convincing those that don't know them that they are whatever concept they are portraying. '
So yes, they are chameleons when it comes to performing! But this shows how talented they are to be able to tackle so many genres successfully.
Also, I believe Bang Si Hyuck, BigHits CEO, put BTS together to be a hip hop group originally, but like he said in one of the videos that he did not put strict rules on them and allowed them to develop and grow as artists. He gave them room to grow and evolve as they grew and evolved as individuals. He gave them the room and freedom to be themselves and not try to package them into a brand that only was one lane. I think this is part of why they have been so successful because they weren't pigeon -holed into a package that was inflexible. I think that's why so many western bands fail after a few years. They start out as teenagers and eventually become adults, but they don't know how to successfully change lanes.

The reason the MV for this is so good, is because Big Hit just went all in with the risk of losing it all if it didn’t go well. They scraped together everything they could for their debut. Even when the company was struggling they would never put less than 100% in the quality of music or production. Some of Bangpd's friends in the industry helped with recording spaces/equipments and during mv production even the directors would pitch in with props. In early videos, the budget might be less but the quality was never compromised. Art has more to do with skill than the tools themselves.

even though the company was about to go under, they tried the best they can to release something that can put them on the map, BigHit struggled financially the first couple of years after debut, in their earlier mvs, their staff and managers participated as extras in the mvs. when you watch the mv of their song Run, all the cars and the vehicles were of their managers'.

I love this so much to look back on and see how their style has evolved musically over the years. It's a bop, it's just fun to see the changes.
This is definitely heavily managed style wise. They were set to debut as hip hop and had to play the part but over the years they found their own sound. This Jimin always makes me feel nostalgic and makes me think about how he was really doing the most to portray what he thought the job needed. He's mentioned it elsewhere that this was him basically falling victim to toxic masculinity (paraphrasing like crazy because he's far more eloquent than me), and how much better he felt when he allowed himself to just be himself.
Sometimes when I watch older kpop stuff I get whiplash from the styling (not as much here), and dear god the hair. It was fine then because the whole industry was doing it, but wow. I'm so glad smartphones didn't exist when I was in my teens. I was a mess, but the evidence is hard copy only. 😂
