In the BU, jimin is always associated with water, jhope is always associated with pills and snickers and his mom, suga is with fire and piano, v is with crimes, jin is with camera and smeraldo flowers (white flower), rm is with mirrors. RM said when writing the lyrics for I Need U he wanted the chorus to be “I need you friend” bc the song was really supposed to be abt needing your friends (as you see in the MV) but “I need you girl” sounded better and made more sense for the song

Did we know the BU was a thing as it was happening?? ABSOLUTELY NOT 🤣🤣
We were so confused, esp ARMYs like me that 1st heard of BTS with this song and then they released THIS version of the MV a few weeks later and we were all like “uuuhhh…what’s goin on??? 👀” and then they didn’t build on the BU until the next comeback. THAT’s when it started to click that there’s a storyline here that’s connecting into the next album and so forth.
It was an incredible experience bc at the time no active group in the industry was doing any elaborate storylines (if you’re as old of a kpop fan as me, you remember the box sets and us celebrating in the streets if we ever got a story based MV 😂😂) so we were all caught off guard

Yep. This!!! As a 15 yr "Kpop" fan I can concur. Very rarely were there ever storylines. A few from Big Bang, B2st, and one or two from Mblaq I think was the extent of it until BTS came and REALLY pushed those boundaries... Innovative geniuses.
Each of the seven boys tells a specific story, and the combined music video tells the story of the pain and hardships of youth. The song by itself is about the dying relationship between two lovers. In the context of the music video, it is about the dying relationship between a young person and their, well, basically their youth, happiness, and even life. The common theme is that even though the boys have their own individual problems, they were able to forget them when together, having a good time.
If we break down each individual member’s significance to the story, in order of age…
Jungkook- Estrangement
His character is a wandering, lost teen. He accidentally starts a fight with two hoodlums (fun fact: played by the managers) but he doesn’t have the willpower to fight back, or maybe avoid conflict. Likewise when he walks into the street as a car approaches. What Jungkook represents, especially as the youngest member, is a lack of hope and motivation that plagues many youth today.
V-Independence
V kills his father. Mull over that for a bit. In the context of an extremely filial Korean culture, this is extremely symbolic. Much like the younger boy, he becomes very distant from guiding figures: father, home, and friends. The latter is especially noticeable in the Prologue and Stigma videos.
Jimin- Depression
He tries to drown himself but can’t do it. Not knowing how to deal with his problems, he turns to suicide, but something is holding him back, keeping him alive. This is most likely the presence of his friends. When the seven boys are shown together, they are happy and can temporarily forget their inner struggles.
Rap Monster- Duty and Repressed Self
He works at a gas station where he is mistreated by the customer, and is the only member who is seen rapping/singing in the music video: “It goes round and round…I go down and down…I’m talking to myself again.” His job is boring, Rap Monster the rapper seems out of place, but there is nothing else to do. The lollipop that turns into a cigarette stands for people who try to repress their addiction to harmful, “adult,” substances like nicotine, and replace it with something harmless like sugar. The addicted adult inside Rap Monster who wants passion, music, maybe drugs, is confined to the gas attendant lollipop man.
J-Hope: Depression and Sickness
He, like Jimin, is clearly suicidal as he is seen attempting to overdose on his medication. Being with his friends provides respite from his demons; he burns the pills in the bonfire.
Suga- Self-Hatred
This is pretty obvious, considering he tries to burn himself alive and his lyrics can be summed up to “I hate this; I hate life; I hate you.” As with most of the boys, we don’t know what the cause of his struggles is, just that they are there and very big.
Jin- Growing Up
Jin’s scenes are much lighter than the other members’-literally, he is in a white room-but not without pain. The six flower petals shown represent beauty and youth. However, they also stand for the six friends who, in turn, represent the bad and ugly of youth. The oldest and most mature, Jin’s character is very conflicted about leaving youth. Maybe he doesn't want to become a boring, soulless adult, but he has to leave behind the recklessness and hardship of youth that can be so treasured, like good friends.
And that’s it.
BTS doesn’t tell us how the story of the seven troubled youths ends, or what it all means. This is partly because their stories aren’t over yet. They also don’t try to explain they whys, hows, wheres, whats, of the music video. It’s entirely up to the viewer. What I’ve written is how the video spoke its message to me, and it is my great pleasure to pass this on to you, just as BTS passed their stories to me and (namjoon voice:) ARMYs all over the world.

As for the piano piece at the opening, it is from the song "Love Is Not Over" (also on the album) the intro of which was composed by Jungkook.

The MV director for this video did explain that, (apart from BU), the general concept was about happiness in the midst of despair. Many sad scenes individually but the guys have joy when they are together. It's a work of art. I watch this when I need to feel something deeper.

This was such a beautiful era as it tackles some of the dark sides in adolescence and how they deal with it. They became an instrument for teens/people going thru the same thing. Such a bright music! 💜

There are remixes of this song on the album, including a slower more melodic piano version. Also fun fact: The word "Girl" is old English and originally was spelled Gurle and it was not gender specific. It wasn't until the ninteenth century that the spelling changed to Girl and was used to refer to a young woman....so if you think in those terms the word Girl does kinda fit! And yes, the scene with Suga in the burning room is real there is a making of vid. of Suga dancing around right after going HOT< HOT HOT! V's character was aggressively "taking out" his abusive father, the girl was V's fictional sister.

Hey y'all! So, I don't know the BU well, but I teach literature and film and can give that take on the video. : ) I realize that the lyrics and the video images are not seemingly cohesive--they seem to be telling different stories--but when that happens there is often a subtle tension created that can bring out something new because of the contrast. In this case, notice how they are singing "I need you" over and over. The images are of them broken, in pain, in despair, facing their demons/fears/terrible circumstances, struggling and failing--but always on their own, isolated. The bad moments involve other people too, side characters, but they really focus on each character being on his own. But then the counter shots are of them together--laughing, running (symbolic of agency, moving forward, going without fear into the future), lots of affectionate/brotherly touching. So even though the song is technically about needing a girl, the imagery is clearly about the very human need OF needing others--needing to be in relationship with others who accept us and are for us. Young men might think that focus is supposed to be a female, which is why he's focusing his angst towards her in the song lyrics, as if (as too many love songs suggest) the "right" girl/boy can save you, make you whole, help you realize who you are, etc. But he also sings how he hates her, how he is torn--he is clearly not getting what he wants/needs from her. But in contrast, the images show that they are getting their love needs filled--by each other. They don't need a girl--they need each other.

I just know that while you are taking this journey thru the storyline you are gonna cry as i know i did, its so sad yet the way they tell the story thru the MVs and lyrics is just so beautiful.
Also there is an original version of this song that is a bit longer (as you see the member stab the guy with the glass bottle and you see the blood all over his hands. (Also you can get the idea of the storyline by reading the comic/ webtoon called ‘save me’. Also ive been an army since 2014 and im still confused till this day and will stay confused lol

The more I listened to BTS' songs, the more I realized that they are notorious in making music like a love song but meant entirely different IF you really followed and understand their journey. It's actually smart because if you're like a casual listener, you can take the lyrics as its face value but if you are a hardcore ARMY, it's kinda fun trying to figure things out 😂
I Need You is a cultural reset, top tier favorite category type of song. this masterpiece holds so much meaning to both BTS and ARMY and I cannot stress enough how important it is and how much necessary it is to delve in BU in order to understand what’s happening.
i love the dichotomy of them being together and them living their own separate lives. notice how when they're together, they're happy. when apart, terrible things happen. so yeah... "i need you" the song isn't really unmatched with the lyrics and the mv. ☺️

@@s.susanmarandi9080 BTS had won Rookie of the Year awards when they first debuted but record sales weren't as good as they hoped and Big Hit was still a struggling company at the time. I Need U was their make or break single - if sales had continued to be middling BTS would probably have disbanded. But it turned out to be their break out hit and won them their first major award and album sales kept Big Hit out of bankruptcy.
09:52 JungKook what is expressed here symbolically is how powerless he feels as a child in a world of adults who can decide for him and push him around at length (by being the youngest, he personifies youth more than any of the other boys): JunkKook is the embodiment of how helpless youth is against adulthood - and in more ways than one: he is defenseless and cannot turn things around until older (that’s why JungKook is actually in a hurry to grow up, as the Prologue and Run MVs will later show). But he also embodies here how helpless youth is against adulthood as a stage of life

After that, time returns Jin to the starting point, so he tries to help his friends again
The story is very beautiful, it tells about some of the suffering of the members, as well as the intensity of their interdependence and love for each other

I hope you can also watch either the dance practice or live performances. This song and its choreography is just one of the many BTS songs that really sealed my journey into the rabbit hole
since this is like the most important part of the BU, don't forget the symbols and important scenes in this MV 'cause you'll be encountering them a lot (which you guys have seen already in Fake Love).. yoongi and fire, jimin and water, hobi and the pills (and yes, the snicker bars), taehyung's incident, namjoon at the gas station, and jungkook's struggles (and that almost car accident).. This music video shows that each of them have their own struggles and problems that they’re facing like depression,anxiety, being alone, losing hope …and they found a shoulder to lean on through their friendship and with each other and when they’re together like in the mv shows that they’re really happy and free and forgets about their problems..and it’s not supposed to be “I NEED U GIRL” it’s supposed to be “I NEED U FRIEND “ Rm said that before.

No sé si les dieron esta información pero, originalmente la letra iba a ser "I need you, friend" pero cambiaron la letra para que sea un poco más comercial, digámoslo así. De esa manera tiene algo de relación la letra y el video, porque se ve la tristeza y felicidad dentro de la amistad de los chicos. Me encantó su reacción!!
The lyrics actually do reflect the storyline. Originally the chorus was written as 'I need you friend' but they changed it to girl for rhythmic purposes.
