  • Please join the CSIS Europe, Russia, and Eurasia Program and the CSIS Japan Chair on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at 3pm EDT for a discussion of a joint report titled Europe’s Security Role in the Indo-Pacific: Making It Meaningful. The conversation will include Max Bergmann, Director of the CSIS Europe, Russia, and Eurasia Program and Stuart Center, Christopher B. Johnstone, Senior Adviser and Japan Chair, and Dr. Lily McElwee, Deputy Director and Fellow with the CSIS Freeman Chair in China Studies.
    The Biden administration has long sought to focus Europe’s attention on the rising challenge posed by China in the Indo-Pacific and beyond. On a range of fronts and through multiple vehicles, including the Group of Seven (G7), Washington has worked with European and Indo-Pacific partners to build an agenda to reduce critical dependencies on China and build the capacity to resist economic coercion. However, despite Washington’s pressure on Europe to focus on China’s economic challenge, it has been less clear what the United States seeks from Europe militarily in the Indo-Pacific region-other than “more.” This report examines Europe's strategic dilemma and perspective from the Indo-Pacific, explores potential military engagement vehicles for Europe in the region, and provides recommendations for what the United States should seek from its European allies in terms of regional interests.
    This event is online-only.

    Can you do a similar episode regarding Asia's security role in Europe. It seems that the only shooting war right now is actually in Europe and that war maybe spiralling out of control.

      There's nothing in Asia (including China) that could project to Europe. It's a non-issue except maybe in the production of arms... If Ukraine could sell its "Sea Baby" designs to Taiwan and South Korea with labor from the Philippines, THAT might be something....

      Chinese drones are keeping NATO's entire Ukraine project afloat isn't it, say thank you.
      But if you're talking about the future, Asia's role in Europe might show up in the form of PLA marching into Poland after US invokes Article 5 and PLA takes a train ride through their Russian allies.

    ASEAN countries do not want a NATO-like security arrangement in the Indo-Pacific. But Philippines wants a NATO-like security arrangement in the Indo-Pacific to address its security requirements. Europe looks down on the Philippines as an insignificant country because it is a small and economically and militarily weak country. However, the Philippines is culturally linked to at least Christian Europe because the Philippines is the only predominantly Christian country in Asia. In this regard, Europe can at least identify itself and work with the Philippines.

    Practically it's far more realistic for China to establish a security role in Europe, say patrolling the Baltic Sea, than European ability to deploy to Asia.

    European should focus more of security role in Europe and not the Asia-Pacific. Asian countries have no major wars in recent years and you are not invited to cause any human sufferings in Asia. By the way. NATO is the Yankee-led expansionist military alliance and must stay in Europe continent.

    • @GeoScorpion
      @GeoScorpion Місяць тому

      Why? Asia is part of the globe, so part of everyone's interest. If you don't like it, stop being part of the global economy and starve. Otherwise, stop spreading Imperialist ideas of spheres of power. You do NOT want the USA to start playing by China or Russia rules. If we did, we'd be having a different conversation in less than a month.

    All this talk about Taiwan is disingenuous. The United States does not have a mutual defense treaty with Taiwan. The US response will most likely be very similar to its current efforts in Ukraine and Israel. These efforts stretch to support functions of both military intelligence communities. They are also stressed the United States economy, as it must provide financing and or aid to these conflicts and support of the allies while struggling with issues at home.
